- Full-day kindergarten: Is my child ready?
In September full-day kindergarten will a part of every school in British Columbia. The question on many parents' minds is: Is my child ready? Experts say no single factor determines whether a child is ready for kindergarten. Your child will be expected to have some level of readiness in a variety of learning areas, also known as 'developmental domains,' by the time he or she enters kindergarten. The B.C. Ministry if Education lists early learning key developmental domains as cognitive [thinking and understanding], physical, language and communication, social and emotional. Click here to read more by our Susan Gall
- Full Day Kindergarten: What is Play-Based Learning? In September 2011 all schools in B.C. will offer full-day kindergarten programs that will include a play-based learning curriculum. Some parents may wonder what this means, and how play effects the development of their child and their learning outcomes.
Play is the work of childhood and is paramount to a child's development; it is recognized by the United Nations High Commission for human rights. Yes, it is the right of all children the world over to simply play. But what is play-based learning?

- Full-day kindergarten: Stress busting for school kids.
This September full-day kindergarten will part of every school in British Columbia.
We often forget how stressful school can be for children, and many these days are showing signs of stress overload, even in the preschool and elementary years.
Stress is not always bad, since it is our body's reaction to demands on our time, energy and strength. Stress keeps us motivated to work hard and achieve our goals. But being overstressed can cause us to become ill and discouraged. Click here to read more by our Yvonne McKenna

Autism
- Transition to school important for children with autism. The end of summer always seemed to come too quickly for teachers. Parents, however, often felt school hadn't come soon enough. That is because their children had become bored after the first few weeks of vacation. However, for children with autism, the radical change between summer and the school year can be overwhelming. This certainly was the case last year for Isabel and Gus's son Toby. Toby had qualified for the extended service year (ESY). ESY was only for the month of June. However, by July and August a child with special needs such as Toby became used to a routine without school. Click here to read more
- Seven easy ways to help a family diagnosed with autism by Elaine Hall
We've all heard the news: one in 91 children are now being diagnosed with autism in the United States alone. This is staggering. Today, almost everyone knows someone with autism. And yet, with all the talk about cures, causes and concerns, there is rarely any information on how we can support a family with this diagnosis. All too often, because folks don't know what to do, they do nothing! Even to the extent of avoiding the family out of fear, or just out of not knowing what to do or say. In this post, I hope to show how simple acts of kindness can make a world of difference for families who have children with autism. ADD/ADHD - ADHD Raises Risk Of Written Language Disorder. Children with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) have a higher chance of having WLD (written language disorder). Although the risk is greater for both sexes with ADHD, girls with ADHD have a higher chance of having WLD together with reading difficulties than boys with ADHD, researchers from Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., and Children's Hospital Boston reported in the journal Pediatrics. Click here to read more
- Childhood ADHD Prevalence Rises By 28% In Ten Years In USA. Over a ten-year period, the prevalence of children diagnosed with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) rose from 7% to 9% of all children, an increase of 28%, according to a report issued by the National Center for Health Statistics, part of the CDC. The period studied was from 1998-2000 through 2007-2009. The authors are not yet sure whether the statistics represent a real increase, or reflect more aggressive diagnosis and reporting. They believe it is probably mainly due to the latter. They added that this report concentrated on children aged between 5 and 17 years. Click here to read more
- Improve Working Memory for ADHD Children. Improve working memory with these tips, organizing strategies, and routines designed to help your ADD/ADHD child or teen retain information! Working memory is the ability to hold information in mind while performing complex tasks. A young child is able to execute simple tasks -- sharpen his pencil when asked -- while one in middle school can remember the expectations of multiple teachers. Many kids with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD) have weak working memory because distraction prevents them from taking in the information they have to remember. Parents and teachers can help ADD/ADHD students develop strategies for remembering more, and, equally important, remind them to use the strategies they came up with. Click here to read more

- When you drink for two, your child becomes damaged. Imagine when your pregnancy is scanned for the first time so you could see your precious baby growing in the womb, suddenly its whole body gives a shudder and the foetus appears to jump. Such a movement is known as the startle reflex, and the scan described above are from photographs from scans that were taken by Peter Hepper, a professor of psychology at Queens University, Belfast and an expert on the effects of alcohol on unborn babies.
The results were astounding. By 18 to 20 weeks - when the foetal brain becomes more developed - the startle reflex in the foetuses of the non-drinking mothers had disappeared. But the reflex was still present in the foetuses of the women who drank, and was visible even at 35 weeks. What does this mean? Click here to read more.

BACK TO SCHOOL - Children's Social Goals Help Determine Their Response To Bullying. Second and third graders who are bullied react in a variety of ways - from discussing the problem or striking back to seeking emotional support. A new study in the journal Child Development has found that the types of goals children set in their relationships help determine how they respond to being bullied - and whether they choose responses that are effective. Click here to read more.
- A Child's Capacity To Form Friendships May Be Affected By Anxiety. As children move toward adolescence, they rely increasingly on close relationships with peers. Socially withdrawn children, who have less contact with peers, may miss out on the support that friendships provide. In a new study about the peer relationships of almost 2,500 fifth graders who are socially withdrawn in different ways and those who aren't withdrawn, researchers have found that withdrawn children who can be described as "anxious-solitary" differ considerably in their relationships with peers, compared to other withdrawn children and children who aren't withdrawn. - A Cheat Sheet about My Child. I have seen other documents developed about "getting to know my child". For example, portfolios set up like scrapbooks. There are many very nice ones that exist. But, for what I was thinking for school, the samples I have seen were cumbersome and I was concerned if they would really even be read. They may also be costly to prepare for more than one (1) person. I wanted a quick reference guide (a cheat sheet, if you will) about my child. A simple, clean, easy to read front and back sheet, that would let everybody that works with my child know specific information that would help them understand my child. All of this, in the hopes that it would benefit everyone involved. Click here for this mom's version!

Other - Fathers' Presence Linked To Enhanced Intellect, Well-Being Among Children.
Fathers who actively engage in raising their children can help make their offspring smarter and better behaved, according to new research from Concordia University. Published in the Canadian Journal of Behavioural Science, the long-term study examined how fathers can positively influence the development of their kids through hands-on parenting. "Fathers make important contributions in the development of their children's behaviour and intelligence," says Erin Pougnet, a PhD candidate in the Concordia University Department of Psychology and a member of the Centre for Research in Human Development (CRDH). Click here to read more - Boys feel talking about problems is a waste of time, study finds. Psychologists have long known that boys are less inclined than girls to talk about their personal issues. Now, a new study teases out what's going on: Boys feel that talking about their problems is simply a waste of time. The speculation for years had been that boys fear embarrassing themselves or being made fun of, but that had never been proven, says the study's lead author Amanda Rose, an associate professor of psychological sciences at the University of Missouri. - From Kid Proof Safety Who's Coming for Dinner?
How often do you sit down to dinner with your kids? With many parents working and children involved in after school activities, connecting over the kitchen table can be a challenge! On September 26, 2011 the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University wants you to make a date to have dinner with your child. Family Day - A Day to Eat Dinner with Your Children, Family Dining Day began in 2001 and has since become a national movement. Research conducted by The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University has shown that there is a correlation between the lack of family dinners and children who smoke, drink, or use drugs. "It's not the food that's the magic - it's the communication," says Kathleen Ferrigno, the Director of Family Day. "It sends a message to kids, that parents care about them, and are involved in their lives." During the rest of the year, if you can't find the time to have regular family dinners, "find other ways to connect with your kids," says Ferrigno. "It's about carving out that time." For the times that your child isn't home during the dinner hour, keep track of key contacts with the KidProof Safety App - it's all the info you need to get in touch with your child at your fingertips!
