Medical Explorations in Science & Anatomy
M.E.S.A. is an interactive distance learning series
providing a hands-on educational opportunity to enhance skills and to academically prepare and motivate high school students who are interested in healthcare careers. Within each session, a comparison is made between mink and human anatomy so students can appreciate the similarities and differences that exist. Fee includes pre-course assignment, hands-on instruction, lecture notes, assessment and use of dissection equipment and specimens.

Fall sessions:
"ARMed and Dangerous!!" - Oct. 2, 4:30-7:00pm
An exploration of the upper limb and back. Dissection of mink specimens will include the key muscles that affect motion in this region. Special attention will be paid to the joints of upper extremities with additional discussion highlighting common injuries to this region.

         "Break a LEG!!" - November 6, 4:30-7:00pm
An exploration of the lower limb, from the hip to the toes. Dissection of mink specimens will include the major muscles that affect motion of the legs. Common sports injuries and joint disorders of this region will be featured.

Watch for more details for sessions to be held in February and March.  For more information on MESA, contact Maegan Hilton at hosa@nemoahec.org or 660.665.6404.

Student Spotlight
Michelle Pickens Michelle Pickens is a second year medical student at the University of Missouri School of Medicine, Columbia. Her hometown is Greentop, MO.

She received her Bachelors of Science Degree in 2011 from Truman State University and was admitted to the MU-Rural Scholars Pre-Admissions Program.

"I first became interested in medicine in high school," said Michelle.  "I liked the idea of medicine, but I wanted to know more about it and joined the AHEC program. After being in the AHEC program and having the opportunity to shadow local physicians and do hands-on workshops, I knew medicine was the right career path for me."

Michelle stated some of the key influences in her career choice were, ". . . always wanting to work in a field where I felt like I could make a difference in people's lives. After shadowing doctors in Kirksville, I was not only impressed with the health aspects, but the doctor-patient relationships that were developed in primary care."

Regarding the best advice received from a teacher, counselor, or mentor, Michelle said, "Going into medicine is a long road. The best advice I've received so far is to not get discouraged and bogged down in details, but to take a step back and look at the big picture and remember why you wanted to do this in the first place and that will help put things in perspective."

As for Michelle's advice to high school students considering healthcare . . ."My best advice would be to start shadowing early and ask as many questions as you can."

Currently, Michelle's main interests are general Pediatrics or Family Practice.  Her ultimate career goal is to practice in rural Missouri.

Thank you for sharing Michelle.  We wish you continued success and will be ready to celebrate your graduation with the Class of 2015!!
