Careers in Health = Numerous, Fast-Growing, Well-Paying
|

Seven teachers, counselors, and school nurses recently completed the 2012 T.E.A.C.H. Academy in Kirksville. Teachers Exploring and Advocating Careers in Health is an experiential and classroom hybrid workshop that engages high school educators in becoming "health career champions". With financial support from the Missouri Foundation for Health, logistics support from A. T. Still University, and a predominance of speakers from Northeast Regional Medical Center, this workshop provided a launching platform for AHEC's technical assistance to area high school educators.
Over the two-day experience (June 12-13), the group engaged with some fantastic guest speakers! Topics included an introduction to health professions shortage data, preparing students for college, connecting teamwork and communication to health career aptitude, and ways to apply a love of psychology to health care.
We were fortunate to hear from several professionals and health care support personnel during worksite experiences. These included tours and presentations involving nursing, physical, occupational and speech therapies; athletic training; dietary services; radiology; laboratory sciences; and in-patient pharmacy. Support personnel in the finance, marketing, outreach, and instructional technology departments discussed how their roles contribute to daily hospital operations - thereby increasing access to health care services.
All participants received resource binders and have been enrolled in AHEC technical assistance opportunities. NEMO AHEC intends to replicate the T.E.A.C.H. Academy in June of 2013 and 2014 to enable high school personnel from across the region an opportunity to participate.
