Allied Health Workshop
|
Seven high school students enjoyed 'Movin' and Grovin' with Allied Health' which was held at the Northeast Regional Health and Fitness Center in Kirksville, on February 20th.
Students opened the morning with team-building activities, explored personal health and well-being, learned about degrees in psychology and social work, and became well-versed in the hospital's chronic disease self management program. After lunch, the students had hands-on experiences in physical therapy, occupational therapy, athletic training, and speech therapy. During the occupational therapy session, the students measured their grip, saw through diseased eyes, and used helping aids that patients utilize after surgery. The day ended with speech therapy activities where the students drank thickened water, and tried to swallow cheese and crackers. Presenters also fastened electrodes to their hands to see what speech patients feel on their throats during therapy. | Nancy Averil, MA., CCC-SLP; Kelli Maeder, MS., CCC-SLP; and HOSA students Alexis Shields and Kendra Sinclair from Milan C-2 High School are laughing it up with electrodes fastened to their hands, mimicking a treatment provided during therapy. |
