Selling Doctors on
Rural Communities

A rural Kansas hospital offers up to eight weeks off for missionary work. The CEO says that doctors who are willing to sleep on a cot in the Amazon or treat earthquake victims in Haiti are ready to serve in rural Kansas.

Easing Debt for
Rural Medical Students
The average medical school student graduates with close to $160,000 in debt.

That heavy burden is one reason why there is a long-running shortage of primary care doctors in rural America. More and more graduating students choose higher-paying specialties over rural primary care.

Agency Spotlight

Agency: Hospice of Northeast Missouri

Mission: The mission of Hospice of Northeast Missouri is to provide compassionate physical, spiritual, and emotional end-of-life care to the terminally ill throughout northeast Missouri, and support to their families and friends sharing this part of life's journey.

Philosophy: Hospice affirms life.  Hospice exists to provide support and care for persons in the last phase of a terminal disease so that they might live fully and comfortably as possible. Hospice teaches a new attitude toward dying and death, realizing and accepting death as part of being born and part of the struggle of life.

Hospice neither hastens nor postpones death.  Care to each patient will be holistic-supporting the body, soul, and spirit. It will be patient centered, family oriented and coordinated.  Hospice exists in the hope and belief that, through care and the promotion of a caring community sensitive to their needs, patients and families may be free to attain a degree of mental and spiritual preparation for death that is satisfactory to them.
