LEGISLATIVE ACTION ALERT
|
Last month the Senate Appropriations Committee passed its Labor-Health and Human Services, and Education bill which proposed level federal funding to the AHEC program ($33.14 million nationally). Unfortunately, the House also released a draft L-HHS FY2012 bill in which the AHEC program WAS ELIMINATED. The current continuing resolution (CR) is set to expire December 16, 2011. The House and Senate must come together to reconcile differences and produce a bill which can be enacted.
As a friend of AHEC, we ask that you go visit www.congress.org to identify your Representative and call this legislator today.
- Identify yourself as a constituent
- Ask to speak with the legislator's health care legislative assistant.
- Tell the aide how you are affiliated with the AHEC; (i.e.: a student, workforce specialist, board member, or community partner)
- Ask the legislator to fund the national AHEC program at $33.14 million, level funding from FY2011, in the FY 2012 L-HHS Appropriations bill.
- Ask that s/he call the Appropriations Committee and communicate the importance/impact of AHECs in your community.
- Give the aide your contact information and ask to be informed about the legislator's actions in response to your request.

NPR HIGHLIGHTS
MILAN CAREER CLUB
|
In a recent post, National Public Radio Health and Wealth Reporter Jacob Fenston (KBIA affiliate) discussed the challenges that rural communities face in attracting physicians to practice medicine in small towns. The story highlights the path of Dr. Katie Dias, a former AHEC and MU Rural Track student who began her pursuit of medicine as a middle school camper. Later, Fenston visits with students from the NEMO AHEC Health Career Club in Milan and discusses how practicing physicians like Dale Essmyer, DO, can assist young people in exploring health careers through a "grow your own" approach. Click on the reporters name above to find the written story and 7-minute radio feature. When you are done, post a comment in the box!

"Clear: Understanding"
Health Literacy Missouri Training
|
Limited health literacy costs the United States $106-$238 billion annually in unnecessary health care costs. In Missouri, this equates to $3.3-$7.7 billion annually.
Health Literacy Missouri (HLM) and NEMO AHEC offer training to healthcare providers interested in being part of the solution to lower these costs in local communities.
You and your staff are invited to participate in "Clear: Understanding", a 60-minute training session, in which you will learn:
- How unclear health communication leads to astronomical health care costs
- What "Teach-back' is and how to use it
- Benefits of paying attention to health literacy, including client satisfaction and cost savings
To schedule a training session for your staff, please contact Becky at bdawson@nemoahec.org. For more information about HLM, go to http://www.healthliteracymissouri.org.
