National HOSA Week  HOSA logo graphics

The Northeast Missouri AHEC Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) had an event-filled National HOSA Week, November 5th-11th, 2011.

Members kicked off the week with a Jumpstart Your Health Career Workshop on Saturday, November 5th at Milan High School.  The workshop included hands-on practice in taking blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and respirations; learning correct gloving technique; and seeing how quickly germs can travel from person to person. Students also participated in teambuilding activities; took a national health knowledge pre-test; and were introduced to health care job shadowing guidelines. They will continue learning about the science of vital signs via targeted on-line activities.

Throughout the school week, HOSA members (1) helped with the Sullivan County Hospital Health Screenings; (2) volunteered at a local nursing home; and (3) viewed a televised human cadaver dissection courtesy of the St. Louis University School of Medicine Adventures In Medicine and Science (AIMS) program.  Students finished the week by presenting a certificate of appreciation and homemade cookies to Dale Essmyer, DO for his support championing the NEMO AHEC HOSA Chapter.

To be eligible, the applicant must be a Missouri resident attending a Missouri institution.  Additionally, the candidate must commit to working in a geographic area or population that is experiencing a shortage of nurses.

The maximum loan amounts are: $2,500 for LPN students and $5,000 for professional nursing students (Diploma, ADN, BSN, MSN, APN, DNP).  Upon successful completion of training and entry into the workforce, the loan amount can be "forgiven" with no debt owed.
