College Visit Focuses on
Health Professions Training
|
Twelve northeast area high school students and 18 other AHEC students from across the state, attended the 1st Annual Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine and Truman State University Campus Visit Day on August 3rd.
The day involved skills stations and interactive case studies that demonstrated the health professions majors at these two institutions. Students interacted with Truman Nursing, Communication Disorders, and Health and Exercise Science faculty, as well as, KCOM faculty, physicians, and anatomy and OMM fellows.
An etiquette lunch gave students the opportunity to practice professional dinner protocol. Attendees experienced Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment demonstrations, conducted simulated patient interviews, practiced intubation and suturing skills on manikins, and saw cadavers first hand. Truman and KCOM admissions were also available to answer questions.
The Health Professions Campus Visit Day will repeat in August 2012.

At the ATSU Simulation Lab, David Kermode, DO, demonstrates intubation to Carli Jackson, a NWMO AHEC high school senior from Grant City, who is interested in pediatrics.

Middle School M*A*S*H Camp
|
Fifty middle-school students from seventeen communities attended Missouri AHEC Science and Health (M*A*S*H) Camps in July 2011. Held in Kirksville and Troy, these hands-on camps used experiential activities to get the students excited about healthcare careers. A sampling of these activities included: exploring hospital departments, learning how to suture a wound, dissecting a sheep brain or fetal pig, learning first aid skills, taking and recording vital signs, and learning to make healthy choices. NEMO AHEC would like to thank the Northeast Regional Medical Center and the Lincoln County Medical Center for co-hosting camp events. Locations for 2012 camps will be announced in March 2012.

S.T.A.P.H. can be infectious!
|
On the campus of Truman State University, Summer Talent Academy for Professions in Health (S.T.A.P.H.) is a new, one-week, residential program for high school juniors and seniors who want to learn more about working in medicine and allied health fields. Students will work with faculty from Truman State University, A.T. Still University of Health Sciences, local physicians, and guest speakers from July 15-22, 2012. The theme for STAPH 2012 is the Mind-Body Connection. Campers will learn about the underlying science behind individual medical fields and actively work together to bring the perspectives of each of these fields to bear on hypothetical medical scenarios.
