Community Alliance: Resources for Elders (C.A.R.E.) meeting - November 7 |
On Monday, November 7, C.A.R.E. members are invited to attend the National Primary Care Week noon lecture on the ATSU/KCOM campus in Kirksville. The topic is "Meeting the needs of the Terminally Ill: The Hospice Interdisciplinary Team" (from Hospice of Northeast Missouri).
The panel will include Stephanie Byrum, RN, Executive Director; David Pfohl, MD, Contracted Hospice Physician; Carrol Davenport, CT, Hospice Chaplain/Bereavement Coordinator; and Carla Hustead, LCSW, CHP-SW, Hospice Social Worker. Attendees will hear about the roles of nurses, physicians, social workers and spiritual counselors in hospice care and how these disciplines interact on a daily basis to meet the needs of the patient and family.
Immediately following the lecture, the C.A.R.E. will meet 1:15-3:00 pm, in the Mehegan Classroom of the Gutensohn Osteopathic Health and Wellness Clinic (same room as the noon lecture).
Agenda items include:
1. NRMC (Northeast Regional Medical Center) Care Transitions Program for CHF Patients
2. Health Literacy 101 - Awareness, Impact and Strategies

NEMO Heart Health - 26 AEDs |
On September 15th, Northeast Missouri Heart Health (NMHH), placed an Automated Electronic Defibulator (AED) at the Kirksville United Methodist Church. This AED marked the 22nd device placed in the Kirksville community in 2011. Since then, 4 more units have been placed for a total of 26!
NEMO Heart Health is a not-for-profit Corporation intent on empowering the citizens of Northeast Missouri to improve their heart health through awareness, prevention, education, and access. MU AHEC Unveils the
Mobile Sim Service |
Mobile Sim clinical simulation service was created in response to the need for interactive and high-tech training resources in rural areas. On board the 30-foot vehicle are three computerized patient mannequins and virtual reality devices with the ability to simulate more than 110 medical scenarios.
Over 700 learners have participated in training in the Mobile Sim since late February, 2011. Those trained include physicians, dentists, RNs, LPNs, student nurses, respiratory therapists, EMTs and more.

Polyglot Med Spanish is available for use on the iPhone, iPod Touch, and the iPad! While you are sitting in a café or waiting at the airport, you can practice medical words, phrases, or entire assessment questions! If you need to conduct a mental health assessment or a prenatal assessment on a Spanish-speaking patient, this app has the phrases you need to get started.
Polyglot Med Spanish is categorized in conversations to allow the healthcare provider to practice a series of assessment or conversational question structures to solicit a "yes" or "no" response. Users can create their "favorites" list, so that locating their most frequently used phrases or questions is fast and easy!
The voice of Polyglot Med Spanish is Alicia Gonzalez, MSN, RN, CS. Ms. Gonzalez, born in Honduras, is a Psychiatric Clinical Nurse Specialist and has worked with the NC AHEC Program developing and presenting beginning Spanish programs for healthcare providers, including Latino culture and cultural differences since 1998.
