Good morning friend,
Family matters. Adam was the first man, he had two sons Cain and Abel, Cain killed Abel. Cain lives but away from the presence of God. Adam has another son Seth; and the footnotes of my bible mention this: "Seth sounds like the Hebrew for the appointed".
There are a few important things we need to keep in mind when we read Genesis 5:
- First notice that in the Bible when they are giving an account of the family tree of Seth they mentioned that each of these men had other sons and daughters but they do not mention their names. They only mention the name of the one who is "called" to continue the blood lineage. Noah is the exception and the name of all his three sons are mentioned.
- Second, the bible mentions how many days each man lived and it confirms that they died. Only Enoch who walked with God did not died but he was taken by God.
- Third all these men fathered their sons but it is not mentioned how they came up with the name or what it means, it only records Lamech explaining the name of Noah.
This is the Book of Generations of Adam Genesis 5Adam fathered Abel, Cain and Seth,
and he diedSeth fathered Enosh, and he died
Enosh fathered Kenan, and he died
Kenan fathered Mahalalel,
and he diedMahalalel fathered Jared,
and he diedJared fathered Enoch,
and he diedEnoch fathered Methuselah
verse 22 Enoch walked with God[
b] after he fathered Methuselah 300 years and had other sons and daughters. 23 Thus all the days of Enoch were 365 years. 24 Enoch walked with God, and he was not,
for God took him.
Methuselah fathered Lamech, and he died
Lamech fathered a son and called his name Noah, saying, "Out of the ground that the LORD has cursed, this one shall bring us relief[
d] from our work and from the painful toil of our hands."
Noah fathered Shem, Ham, Japheth,
and he died.I do not know about you, but I feel like I understand this ancestry/generations thing better now that I have the chart and the tree. It gives me perspective on the family on the family ties.
How about you?
God bless you abundantly!
