After my daylong life balance seminar in Kentucky, a gracious and grateful woman took my hand.   She was about my age (that's young!), yet she said her husband had just been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.  As she faced this illness, where she will lose him twice, she looked at me with tears in her eyes and said, "We're lucky.  We have a chance to say and do what he haven't said and done yet."  By then, I had tears.  All day my message had reinforced the importance of truly living our priorities, and this courageous woman showed me how.

With Mother's Day just past and Father's Day approaching, it's a great time to heed that wise nurse's advice: say and do what we haven't said and done yet.

While many greeting cards eloquently express our thoughts in someone else's words, there is no substitute for our own.  So make that phone call or pen that letter (no emails or Facebook postings please!) and tell the moms and dads in your life how you feel.  And thank them.  Our parents may not have done everything right, but they did their best based on who they were and what they knew then. I'm guessing some would like "do-overs" in some areas--wouldn't we all?

Often in our busy world, miles and sometimes even memories, separate us from the people we love.  Take time now to tell them--show them--how you feel.

I read over 2000 true stories to write Chicken Soup for the Father & Daughter Soul.  Most were filled with immense love and joy; some with sadness and disappointments too.  Each father brought something unique--who he was, based on his family history, his knowledge, his role models.  Those stories taught me that we need to appreciate what our fathers gave, and forgive the rest.

Even if your dad was not perfect (and who is?), take the advice of our friend in Kentucky.  Show your love.  Now.  Tell him all you appreciate about him.  Write him a letter, even if he's in heaven.  Like the stories in Chicken Soup for the Father and Daughter Soul, embrace your stories and each other, evoke your own memories and deepen your love.

Say and do what you haven't said and done yet, and make it a happy Father's Day!
