Volunteer NewsletterAugust 2011
Greetings!
Scott Myers 1
August is the wrap-up for our summer programs. For our summer track program we have our culminating meets coming up. This year has been an exceptional year in the track program. With close to 600 kids in the program we have engaged more kids from all parts of the city than ever before. The other exciting thing we've seen this summer is the engagement of parents and the number showing up for our meets. Our qualifying meet for the finals is this Saturday, August 6th. The finals are scheduled for the 20th. Please join us if you can.

The biggest event we have in August is the inaugural Valor Games Midwest, a three day competition for wounded, ill or injured veterans and active duty service members. The event runs from August 23 - 25 at venues including Soldier Field, US Cellular Field and McGuane Park. This is the first regional event of its kind in the country and is being organized by World Sport Chicago in partnership with the Chicago Park District, the S.A.V.E. Foundation, the United States Department of Veterans Affairs and U.S. Paralympics. Volunteer roles are posted on the WSC website.

Finally, we wrap-up our efforts with the "One Summer Chicago" project. Please read the article below to get an idea of how World Sport Chicago and its partners joined forces this summer to support the City and County in their efforts to address youth violence.  This pilot program has helped nearly 2000 kids keep safe this summer. Our partnership with programs across the communities of Garfield Park, Little Village, Englewood and Woodlawn have yielded a lot of insights to the City and to us. From our insights we hope to building stronger programs for Chicago's kids on an on-going basis.

Sincerely,

Scott Myers
Executive Director

Feature Story

WSC Supports "One Summer Chicago"

World Sport Chicago is proud to support the One Summer Chicago initiative, a collaboration of the offices of Mayor Emanuel and County Board President Preckwinkle, Chicago private philanthropies, community-based and faith-based organizations and the University of Chicago - Crime Lab. The initiative aims to curb the long-term growth of youth violence by identifying strategies to keep youth engaged throughout the summer. One Summer Chicago provides funding in the four pilot communities of Englewood, Garfield Park, Little Village and Woodlawn to expand existing programming and create new pilot programs.
