World Sport Chicago Volunteer Newsletter

April 2011

Greetings!
Scott Myers 1
Throughout World Sport Chicago's short life we have accomplished a number of firsts. From bringing major events such as the World Boxing Championships, or the American Cup gymnastics event to Chicago to launching programs such as Coach for Chicago and the BAM - Sports Edition program, World Sport Chicago has focused on bringing new and creative programs and events to the city.

Today, we are very pleased to announce another first.  World Sport Chicago will host the Valor Games Midwest August 23 - 26.  This event builds off of US Paralympics' focus to support sports and recreation opportunities for wounded, ill or injured service members.  Valor Games Midwest is the inaugural regional competition for 150 of these athletes.  This three day event will start with Opening Ceremonies and the first day of competition at Soldier Field on the 23rd.  Subsequent days of competition will be at U.S. Cellular Field and other Chicago venues.

Over the coming months we will provide more information about the event and the opportunity to watch, and or assist as a volunteer.

There is another program that we have been nurturing here in Chicago over the past few months which is beginning to expand. On March 22nd WSC hosted a spring workshop at Malcom X College for the WSC Community Sports Consulting program. This program is an initiative we launched to provide assistance to community sport organizations. Each quarter we are inviting an ever growing number of community organizations to come together to discuss issues and questions, share their best practices and hear presentations on everything from sponsorship, to organization management to coach training. Additionally we are offering to assist sports clubs in finding expertise from the Chicago business community to help address specific challenges that they have. This program provides a forum for groups to share ideas and work together to solve mutual challenges. Through the program we hope to strengthen community sport groups across the city. You can read more about the workshop in this month's newsletter.

Sincerely,
