EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival Update
EPCOT International Food & Winefest was a great success. Guests loved the new production video showing the history of the Finger Lakes, Hazlitt and Red Cat Wines. Steve Cruty, Brad Phillips and Mark Ballard enjoyed providing our special brand of "Finger lakes" hospitality. The wines were all a HUGE success and the 1,000 guest of the final nights Palette for the Senses party enjoyed all the various Red Cat beverage options, Red Cat & White Cat in a glass, Cat's on the Beach, Red Cat Slushies all were available. The world class Hazlitt 1852 Riesling was offered and was a great voice for the quality of Hazlitt 1852 wines and the Finger Lakes.

While in Orlando Steve, Brad & Mark had a day in the Orlando market with the local SWS salespeople. Over 65 cases of wine were sold in and around Orlando in a short period of time. Accounts and consumers alike LOVE Red & White Cat Wine. Stay tuned for more Florida success stories. ~Mark Ballard, Florida Sales & Marketing Manager

Seneca Santa
14th ANNUAL SENECA SANTA* FUNDRAISER PARTY AT HAZLITT WINERY
Join the Schuyler County business and professional community for some holiday fun and frolic as we gather at Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards for the 14th Annual Seneca Santa Party & Fundraiser on Saturday December 11th from Noon until 5:00. Rarely will you have this much fun and know that the money you pull from your pockets throughout the day will provide a Christmas gift for a disadvantaged child in the area. The day will be filled with music and dancing, food and wine, and raffles and games with incredible prizes donated by regional businesses. A group of talented local musicians will entertain throughout the afternoon. Guest and celebrity bartenders will serve up your favorite recreational beverages while local restaurants tempt your taste buds. Your $10.00 admission donation includes a commemorative wine glass.
If you are unable to attend the party fundraiser but you'd like to support this worthy local cause, you may participate by sending your donation to :
Seneca Santa c/o Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards P.O.Box 207 Hector, NY 14841
Or just stop by, say hi and drop off your donation to the kids or an auction item for the fundraiser. *Seneca Santa, a not for profit organization, was founded by a group of Watkins Glen businessmen in the 1940's to provide Christmas gifts for Schuyler County's under privileged children birth to age 12. In 2010 the organization will be serving well over 400 children in the county.
Seneca Santa accepts donations of money, hats, mittens, coloring books & crayons, family board games and children's books. Seneca Santa depends entirely on community support to fund its charitable efforts. Monies raised are used to provide an age-appropriate toy along with fruit, holiday snacks and the previously mentioned gifts. The event at the Hazlitt family winery has raised over $151,000 in its thirteen-year run.

"We want Red Cat in our state"

"We want Red Cat in our state" and "Why can't you ship to us?" are both consumer comments and questions we are met with quite often. Below you will see a list of states that we currently have distribution in and states that we have the ability to ship to. So how does distribution and shipping work?
America's distribution for the wine and spirits world works in a three-tier system: supplier, distributor, and retailer. For a supplier (Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards) to be represented in a state, it needs to identify a distributor that wants to represent its brands. The retailer contacts the distributor that carries the brands to put in the retail store. When we start to reach out to states across the country and further away from NY, we become an unknown brand and it becomes harder to find a distributor to represent us. The other issue we run into is our limited ability to supply product. We could enter a state, but if we don't have the wine to supply the distributor for the retailer, then it becomes a moot point.
Shipping laws for the states are similar to distribution in that the laws are different in each state. Each state limits a winery's ability to ship based on things such as: required permit, gallons of wine produced in a year, tax bonds, or wholesale distribution. The states also break down shipping into off-site and on-site shipping. Off-site shipping is when a customer orders wine from our website and wants it shipped to them. On-site shipping is when a customer is physically in the winery and wants to purchase wine and have it shipped to a state.
For the future, we are very optimistic about new state distribution opportunities. We are confident in that we have a strong consumer brand and the ability to have strong production to meet the demand of supply (new Naples facility). Each year we try to open up distribution for 1-2 new states and for 2011 we have 3-4 states we would like to try to open. As we continue to grow state distribution, our shipping opportunities will grow as well. So for all of you out-of-state fans, watch for us coming to a state near you!

Department of the Month:
Vineyard WorkersJohn SantosVineyard Manager
John Santos has been our Vineyard Manager for 14 + years! He is in charge of managing the Vineyard Pigs (that's what the workers call themselves) and does anything that Doug wants him to do. John said his favorite thing about his job is, "I like the challenge of converting the farms from Native varieties to Vinifera." John said he loves the people that he works with and the freedom and responsibility he has to make changes to our vineyards.
When John isn't out in the vineyards at Hazlitt you can find him at home in his own vineyards growing grapes. John's favorite foods are locally grown foods in season. He said, "there is nothing better than a fresh picked apple eaten within a couple hours of picking or, a really good vine ripened tomato. There is nothing worse than a winter tomato picked green from the vine in Mexico or an out of season apple that is mushy or mealy." Some of John's past hobbies include farming of over 50 varieties of peppers and 38 varieties of tomatoes at one time and climbing mountains in the Adirondacks with his wife.
Jon Beckhorn Vineyard Pig
Jon Beckhorn has been working in the vineyards growing and cultivating grapes at Hazlitt for five years. Jon says his favorite things about working here are that he "gets to work with John Santos and is able to work for a company that has a family heritage similar to his own: grape growing. My family has been growing grapes in the area for over 100 years, so it's nice to carry on the family heritage." (There is even a road named Beckhorn Road not too far from the winery.) The one thing that Jon said he loves about his job is "John Deere Tractors."
When Jon isn't here working in the vineyards you can find him fighting fires in the local area as a volunteer fireman for the Hector Fire Department. Jon also enjoys growing grapes outside of farming here and is getting ready to start his own farm in the spring.
Robert DanielVineyard Pig Robert began working at Hazlitt back in 2004 for a summer internship in our vineyards. He says "they haven't released me from my internship yet." His job consists of growing our grapes and doing whatever Doug would like done. The one thing Robert loves about his job is "rocks! Shiny rocks, geodes, fossils. I like to dig out really big rocks in the vineyards, as big as your car with my bare hands." Before Robert started working at Hazlitt he earned a degree in Natural Resources at Cornell, was in the military, had past experience working in cotton fields, played the saxophone in Australia, and played in a drum line in the Super Dome for a sporting event!
When Robert isn't finding cool rocks in the vineyards, you may find him at home knitting! Robert's knitting skills are so amazing that he was even featured in a knitting book. Robert also enjoys brewing beer, watching roller derby (fan of Ithaca League of Women Rollers), Gewürztraminer and Zweigelt wine. He is a foodie and enjoys Scotch.
Greg Triner Vineyard Technician (Pig)
Greg has been working at the winery and out in the vineyards for 11 years. Greg and his wife (Leigh (Hazlitt) Triner) came back to the area after trying out the California lifestyle.
Greg wears multiple hats around the winery. He spends most of his time in the vineyards and he said that he does "anything that Leigh asks of me." Some of the things that Greg loves about his job is that he "gets to work outside and do a different job every day, it's never the same thing."
When Greg isn't at the winery or in the vineyards, you can find him playing darts and water or snow skiing. Greg says his favorite food is pizza and favorite wine is Veuve Cliquot Brut Yellow Label. And he also enjoys spending time with his wife and kids.
