Big Changes in South Lake Tahoe!
New El Dorado Beach seating area under construction
Have you heard about the road construction in town? Have you seen the construction at El Dorado Beach and wondered what was going on? Well, it's about some great improvements in our town. Cal Trans is working on a $40.6 million road improvement project on a 2 mile stretch of Highway 50 between Trout Creek and Fremont Avenue. They are adding sand traps, storm water detention vaults and filtration ponds to collect and treat runoff before it hits the lake. The project also adds new bike lanes, disability compliant sidewalks, pedestrian lighting, new intersection signals and land and streetscaping.
In the same general vicinity, South Lake Tahoe, EL Dorado County and California Tahoe Conservancy are working jointly on the 56 acre project also known as Lakeview Commons. The project will not only improve erosion control and lake clarity but it will also improve the visual appearance of the area. Phase 1 at El Dorado Beach is expected to be at least 50% completed before winter. They are putting in non-motorized boat storage, a permanent snack bar, a new restroom, terraced seating at the beach, a cantilevered a lake view, enhanced public beach access and a much improved scenic view where Highway 50 meets the lake. The next phase will include enhanced walkways adjacent to the Campground by the Lake along with seating, lighting, and great places to enjoy South Lake Tahoe. For a brochure, click here.
