The Gold Standard
By Jeremy Jones
Every 4 years we get blessed with the Summer Olympics and the miraculous stories of so many great athletes across the world. Their drive, desire, and determination gets put on center stage as the previous 4 years of training is tested against other individuals who excel in the same events and activities. Blood, sweat, and tears are shed as each athlete puts forth maximal effort to "medal" during each competition. Out of the thousands of athletes that participate, only a few end up standing on the podium receiving a bronze, silver, or best of all, gold medal. These Olympic athletes are only separated by hundredths of seconds from a lot of other professional athletes, but what really sets them apart is their mental attitude and aptitudes. They believe they are the best at what they do and they go out and prepare for it every day. They hold themselves to higher standards. They hold themselves to the Gold Standard.
Each and every one of us can learn from these Olympic athletes. No matter what our profession is, or what our responsibilities are, or what daily activities we partake in, we should all hold ourselves to this same Gold Standard. Many different factors play into reaching your highest personal level. Three of them that you can begin focusing on today are discipline, integrity, and teamwork.
Discipline. Often times this word can get misconstrued and taken negatively. I encourage you to look at it from an inner or self discipline point of view. The boundaries or guidelines you set for yourself are huge contributors to your success. If you are practicing a specific sport or have a project due at work or school, you need to discipline yourself to set aside the required time to practice or research. Sometimes this means missing out on the "fun stuff" that everyone else is doing at that time. Just remember, it's up to you to establish those guidelines and dedicate your time toward your desired goal. Even if that means getting up and working out or working on your project at 5 in the morning! Set yourself apart by doing what others don't normally do.
Integrity. No matter where you are, or who is or isn't around you, you should conduct yourself with integrity. Be transparent and act ethically and morally in any situation. Don't practice hard one day because you are around your teammates and then practice sloppily the next day because you are by yourself. Be honest with yourself and everyone around you every single day, every single situation. Building a positive character is so much easier when it is done consistently. Adhere to your principles if you are at work, at home, at school, or on the playing field. Again, set yourself apart by doing what others don't normally do.
Teamwork. The sooner you reach out to help others and allow others to help you, the quicker you will realize and achieve new levels of success. There aren't too many things in life that were meant to perform by yourself. Even a sport like golf requires working with a swing coach, a conditioning coach, and often times a sport psychologist. When you work with others you are able to develop skills and get jobs done in a much more efficient manner. Learning to work with a team, or being part of a team, is one of the single best reasons to get children involved in sports. Even if they don't end up being a star athlete, the lessons learned along the way will help them in many other aspects of their life. If you have health and fitness goals you are striving to reach, join a training studio, hire a Fitness Coach, and surround yourself with a healthy community. You will be amazed at your own progress by simply working with others who have similar goals.
As you continue to develop these 3 traits, all other aspects of your life will improve as well. Your confidence will soar and your capabilities will increase. You might not be training for the Olympics, but I do encourage you to follow all of these athletes' amazing stories and triumphs. Their discipline, integrity, and teamwork capabilities are being put on stage for the entire world to see. We can all learn from them and their drive and determination to be the best at what they do. Their thousands of hours of preparation are put toward one common goal...receiving a medal and achieving their Gold Standard. I encourage you to do the same.

How did you find Funktional Fitness?
I was working out at a crossfit gym in Phoenix and wanted someplace closer to home so I could train with my running partner. I drove by FunkFit every day and decided we should check it out. I had also heard great things from my massage therapist Janna.
How has FunkFit changed your life? My entire lifestyle has changed for the better. I feel stronger and healthier. My workouts, energy level and nutrition have all greatly improved.
What specific results or goals have you attained? How has your Fitness Coach contributed to your accomplishments?
When I first joined FunkFit my main goal was to complete a marathon. I was able to do that in January with the PF Changs in Phoenix. Leigh was a key part to making that happen. He knows what I am capable of and pushes me past my comfort zone. He challenges me during every workout. Without his encouragement and training, I don't think I would be able to accomplish what I have.
What was your favorite thing about your last private training session? I really don't have one favorite thing. When I used to workout I always dreaded going. Now, I actually look forward to 5:00 AM. I love the 5:00 AM Group Fit and Leigh as a trainer!! We all work well together, encouraging each other to do our best and at times we even get a little competitive, which I really enjoy.
Tell us something you've learned during your training sessions and apply to your everyday life. To strive to be a little better each day. I try to apply this to my work, family and training.
If someone out there were thinking about joining FunkFit what would you say?
Definitely join - you will not regret it. I have belonged to a lot of different clubs and nothing even comes close to Funktional Fitness. Everyone is so encouraging and helpful, you couldn't ask for a better community to be part of.
Tell the FunkFit community a goal you are striving to attain? I will be competing in my second marathon in January and then I hope to eventually be able to complete a triathlon.

 | | Click on Chris and Pablo's picture and check out of their most recent workouts! |
What specific results or goals have you obtained while training in your Tandem group with 1 other individual? How have the Fitness Coaches contributed to your accomplishments? Chris: The thing I like most about funkfit is the trainers. They are ALWAYS in a great mood. I know that when I came in to workout (even if I'm dragging) I'm going to get a positive upbeat experience and the trainer is going to do their best to make my workout worthwhile. I always feel better when I walk out the door than when I walked in. Pablo: I have worked with Melissa inGroupfit. She has done well working with me. She knows the areas I need improvement. Over the course of my sessions I am stronger and my form has improved.
How has the other individual in your tandem session helped you reach your health and fitness goals?
Chris: I think we actually make a good combination...there are things that he's better at and things that I am better at so we really do push each other. It's always easier to push yourself just a little bit harder when the person next to you is going for it. Plus, I like the accountability aspect of knowing that it's more than just me working out. There are other people counting on me being there to get a great workout in.
Pablo: Chris is awesome! He gives me the push I need! Makes training fun!
Tell us something you've learned during your training sessions and apply to your everyday life.
Chris: The other great positive about the trainers is there ability to work with how your body feels that day. Whether it's rolling out or some extra stretching or changing an exercise a little bit if you have a nagging injury. They are really good at getting the best workout your body can get that day...even with soreness, fatigue, etc...I've tried to take some of the stretching and foam rolling exercises home to alleviate minor aches and pains and stiffness.
Pablo: Training has given me a positive outlook daily. Being able to encourage others, making better choices, finishing strong, and not letting up!
What would you share with other members who are considering joining the Tandem training program?
Chris: Try it!! It's a good in-between from personal and group-fit. You get a great workout with individualized attention from the trainer, but the benefit of a partner to share the fun.
Pablo: Try it you will like it! Especially if you want an extra push! It makes you feel good when your family, friends, and co-workers notice your appearance and mood!

By Marshall Goldsmith
America's most sought-after executive coach shows how to climb the last few rungs of the ladder.
The corporate world is filled with executives, men and women who have worked hard for years to reach the upper levels of management. They're intelligent, skilled, and even charismatic. But only a handful of them will ever reach the pinnacle -- and as executive coach Marshall Goldsmith shows in this book, subtle nuances make all the difference. These are small "transactional flaws" performed by one person against another (as simple as not saying thank you enough), which lead to negative perceptions that can hold any executive back. Using Goldsmith's straightforward, jargon-free advice, it's amazingly easy behavior to change.
