Independent From Fear

By Jeremy Jones

The 4th of July marks the day the United States declared its independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain back in 1776. We celebrate this holiday every year with festivities that include fireworks, barbeques, carnivals, family reunions, and parades. The celebration reminds us of how great of a country we live in and all that we have accomplished over the years. Have you ever stopped to think where we would be if the original 13 colonies were complacent and didn't strive for more? What if they became too comfortable and never thought about living outside of the rule of Great Britain? Had we not, we definitely would not be celebrating on July 4th. What things have you become too complacent with in your life? What fears have prevented you from accomplishing more? And most importantly, what has this cost you?

Lao Tzu said it best, "When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be." Letting go of the fears that have impeded your progress is one of the most satisfying and uplifting things that you can do. However, most people never experience this satisfaction and growth because they constantly run from their fears instead of facing them head on. If you continue to let fears and complacency run your life you will never know what you might be. But if you face your fears, make changes, and be open to growing and experiencing new events, you give yourself the opportunity to blossom into a better person physically, mentally, and spiritually.

On a recent trip to Sedona, I went to face to face with a former nemesis of mine...heights. For much of my earlier years I had a fear of heights that prevented me from going on certain rides at amusement parks, limited my experiences with nature (because you can't see nearly as much from the ground as you can from atop a mountain), and caused an increase in my heart rate and perspiration in my palms just from thinking about looking out of a window or over an edge. Over the last 5 years or so (and even more so in the past 1-2 years) I've overcome this fear and it no longer affects me. I didn't overcome it by staying away from it, or just reading about it, or talking to others about it; I overcame it by facing it head on. I overcame it by looking over the edges, by going to the top of the Empire State building, by riding the tallest roller coasters, and as I did in Sedona, climbing and hiking to the highest possible point on Cathedral Rock.

As I sat there on the edge overlooking what seemed like the entire world, I couldn't imagine not being able to admire the beautiful view. A sense of calmness overcame me when I thought about the fear of heights that used to exist within me. I knew that I had overcome something that ultimately I created within my own head. And I knew ultimately that I had the power and control to eliminate this exact fear by facing it and prevailing with determination and persistence.

During this month of independence, I challenge you to do the same. What is your "fear of heights?" What is keeping you from accomplishing your goals? Face it. Overcome it. Be persistent and make it happen.

Think like Lao Tzu and remember, "When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be."

How did you find Funktional Fitness?
Luis (owner) used to be my trainer at 24 Fitness.  I followed the business on Facebook and after 3 years, I finally joined ...:)

How has FunkFit changed your life?
I am starting to feel like my old self again.  Between work, kids, etc. I was worn out and I needed to do something for me. Paige is awesome, I always look forward to working out with her, even when I have long days at the office.

What specific results or goals have you attained?  How has your Fitness Coach contributed to your accomplishments?
This might sound silly but I am so excited that I am getting definition in my shoulders and arms.. Paige is a ball of energy and forces me to engage in every workout and always pushes me beyond my limits..

What was your favorite thing about your last private training session?
Paige yelling at me "Come on Patricia, you can do it, only 5 more seconds!"  I know it's more like 10-15 seconds but she does that to keep me going..  ha!

Tell us something you've learned during your training sessions and apply to your everyday life.
A positive attitude can get you through anything, even a hard workout..

If someone out there were thinking about joining FunkFit what would you say?
I would encourage it because the atmosphere and people are great!

Tell the FunkFit community a goal you are striving to attain?
I want legs and abs like Paige!!

How did you find Funktional Fitness?
I was referred by a friend who know Jeremy.

How has FunkFit changed your life?
Funkfit has really improved my overall athletic performance.  I feel healthier, stronger, quicker, and I feel that I look better.

What specific results or goals have you attained?  How have the fitness coaches contributed to your accomplishments?
The Fitness Coaches at FunkFit are all great in their own ways.  All very energized, motivating, and well trained.

What was your favorite thing about your last GroupFit session and what time do you normally attend?

I try and attend a GroupFit every day because each class is so good.  Lately, I have been coming at noon.  The 12pm session is great because I get to work out with some of the other coaches, breaks up my day, and always get a great workout from Joe.  Last class was yesterday with Jared and we did TRX training.  Feel beat down but yet energized after that class.  Legs are sore!

Tell us something you've learned during your GroupFit sessions and apply to your everyday life.
I feel injury free healthier, mobility is much better, and stronger.

If someone out there were thinking about joining the Groupfit program what would you say?
I would go back to the answer I stated above.  If you are interested in improving my overall athletic performance, feel healthier, get stronger, get quicker, and feel better .... Then JOIN FunkFit.

Tell the FunkFit community a goal you are striving to attain?
Looking to continue getting stronger and quicker for my Triathlons...and of course still trying to get the ripped athletic body:)

Ashley's Getting Leaner!
Ashley's Getting Leaner!

What specific results or goals have you obtained while training in your semi-private group of 3-4 other individuals?  How have the Fitness Coaches contributed to your accomplishments?

I have learned a lot of new exercises and had a lot of one on one attention to make sure that I am doing everything correctly so that I don't get hurt and get the most out of each exercise. I have also had the opportunity to meet new people. We all help motivate each other.

How have the other individuals in your small group helped you reach your health and fitness goals? We all encourage each other and I have become more confident in what I have learned by being able to help others and talk about my journey at Funk Fit.

Tell us something you've learned during your training sessions and apply to your everyday life.
I have been working on my flexibility  and stretching even on the days I don't go to the gym. I work on my feet so anything I can do to relieve my back and knees is a huge help.

What would you share with other members who are considering joining the semi-private training program?
Semi-private gives you the one on one attention and helps you get confident in the exercises. It is a great chance to ask all the questions you want and get to know other people that work out there.

After a 2 year hiatus, Lauren missed working with her clients and cheering on their lifestyle changes every day. No Excuses

By Brian Tracy

Most people think success comes from good luck or enormous talent, but many successful people achieve their accomplishments in a simpler way: through self-discipline. No Excuses! shows you how you can achieve success in all three major areas of your life, including your personal goals, business and money goals, and overall happiness.

Each of the 21 chapters in this book shows you how to be more disciplined in one aspect of your life, with end-of-chapter exercises to help you apply the "no excuses" approach to your own life. With these guidelines, you can learn how to be more successful in everything you do--instead of wistfully envying others you think are just "luckier" than you. A little self-discipline goes a long way...so stop making excuses and read this book!

Eating Clean

Southwestern Bison Frittata

Ingredients:

1 Tablespoon unrefined coconut oil
1 small yellow onion chopped
1 jalapeno seeded and chopped
1 poblano pepper seeded and chopped

2 cloves of garlic chopped

1 to 1.5 cups of sweet potato skinned and shredded

1 lb ground bison
1 T chili powder

1 tsp chipotle powder

½ Tablespoon ground cumin
¾ c salsa (I use chipotle salsa from fresh and easy but verde salsa is good too) plus more for topping
Sea salt and pepper to taste
12 eggs

(optional garnish toppings: avocado, green onions and cilantro)

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Heat coconut oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat and add peppers and onions. Sauté until onions are translucent.  Add bison and cook until it has started to brown. Add the sweet potatoes and garlic, cook until sweets are soft.  Add spices and salsa and stir in well. Spread out bison mixture in 9x13 baking dish. Whisk eggs then pour over the top of bison mixture.  Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake another 10-15 minutes until eggs are cooked through on top. Garnish with more salsa and optional topping of avocado, cilantro and/or green onions.
