Thanks Dad
By Jeremy Jones
Last month we celebrated our love for Moms and encouraged that love to be shared everyday, not just on Mother's Day. Well, the same can be said for Dads too. Often times Dads can get a bad rep because of those men out there who choose not to be responsible for their children. Anne Geddes said it best, "Any man can be a Father but it takes someone special to be a Dad." Despite those out there that choose to not father their children, there are many special Dads that deserve special recognition. These are the Dads that consistently provide for their children, do their best to raise them, and pass along generations of knowledge, work ethic, and support.
A Dad plays a much different role in the life of a child than the Mom does, and there are so many of them out there that do such a wonderful job. The proof is in the development of the children, the unity of the family (regardless of both parents still being together), and the decisions that children make as they get older. Dads get to be protectors of their daughters and strengtheners of their sons. They are disciplinarians and encouragers, enforcers and comedians, lovers and supporters. They are one of a kind, and without them, none of us would be where we are today.
I've been blessed in my life to be surrounded by phenomenal Dads; from my business partner to my co-workers and my closest friends and family members and to the outstanding Dads that are part of the FunkFit community. And of course most special of all, my Dad that stepped in and raised me since I was only a few months old. It didn't matter that he wasn't my biological. He was much more than a father; he demonstrated all of the special traits that Anne Geddes was referring to and continues to support, encourage, and motivate me today. Thank you Dad. Because of him and all of the other special Dads I know, I look forward to the challenge and treat of one day being called Dad myself.
In the mean time, Happy Father's Day to all of the special Dads out there! Thank you for everything you do and continue to do.

How did you find Funktional Fitness?
I visited Funktional Fitness after seeing a Groupon advertisement for them. I never actually used the Groupon because Funktional Fitness had some great "get started" offers. Erin and I discussed my goals and she thought Sara Kretz would be a great fit for me. Thanks Erin!!!
How has FunkFit changed your life?
Training with Sara at Funkfit has completely modified my life. Even though I am in the health care field, walking the walk was a challenge. Sara motivated me to take a good look at what I am putting in my body and how it effects how I look and feel. Using several small changes, I have completed a diet makeover. The very first change was investing in a few good water bottles. I went from drinking less than 20 ounces a day to at least 60 ounces every day. I carry my water bottle with me everywhere. In the past, I have gotten myself into the gym only to realize I didn't know what to do or how to do it. Sara has taught me so much every session about how to train safely and efficiently.
What specific results or goals have you attained? How has your Fitness Coach contributed to your accomplishments? I have lost weight and inches. I have a good start on improving my poor posture which has been contributing to back and neck problems. I have completed a 3 mile adventure race. I feel healthier, stronger, and I have more energy. Sara has helped me figure out what my specific goals are, and she works diligently in planning our workouts to meet those goals. Almost every week she says something like ... I was thinking about you yesterday and I changed a few things in our workout plan to help with... (fill in the blank with a goal).
What was your favorite thing about your last private training session? My favorite thing about any session ... is being done! Unlike many FunkFit clients, I don't love to exercise. But I love how it makes me feel after and training with Sara helps make it tolerable (or almost fun!!!) I love the endorphins that are flowing after a workout!
Tell us something you've learned during your training sessions and apply to your everyday life. I have learned the value of a foam roller! I have one at home now, andI don't know how I lived without it for so long.
If someone out there were thinking about joining FunkFit what would you say? The sooner the better!!! There are so many great fitness coaches at FunkFit. They can really help you realize your goals.
Tell the FunkFit community a goal you are striving to attain?
I am currently striving to tune in to my heart rate for more efficient cardio training and score a perfect score on the Functional Movement Screen!

How has FunkFit changed your life?
It has provided a well rounded fitness plan versus the singular focus exercises I had been doing. My sport of choice has been cycling and GroupFit has allowed me to be a better cyclist (as well as improved my overall fitness). It has also helped me maintain the weight loss I had a few years ago.
What specific results or goals have you attained? How have the Fitness Coaches contributed to your accomplishments? My specific goals have always revolved around maintaining my weight loss and I have been able to keep the weight off for 3 years this last April. The Coaches have been great about pushing me forward and not letting me get complacent where I am in regards to my fitness level.
What was your favorite thing about your last GroupFit session and what time do you normally attend?
I normally attend the 9:00am sessions and I enjoy the friendships I have made and the overall supportive mentality of the Coaches.
Tell us something you've learned during your GroupFit sessions and apply to your everyday life.
Melissa has been very good about helping me stretch and improve my form and that has helped with posture and my cycling.
If someone out there were thinking about joining the GroupFit program what would you say?
Just do it, there is nothing scary about GroupFit and every one of us has been new at some point. No one can look as ungraceful as I was (some may say I'm still ungraceful) in GroupFit so there is nothing to worry about.
Tell the FunkFit community a goal you are striving to attain?
I plan on running a half marathon this winter and I want to work my way towards an Olympic distance triathlon. |
Semi-Private Training Spotlight
|
Julie Billings, Jenni Juarros, Rhonda Jones, and Michelle Verstraten Training in their group since April 2012 | | The crew hard at work! |
What specific results or goals have you obtained while training in your semi-private group of 3-4 other individuals? How have the Fitness Coaches contributed to your accomplishments? Jenni: In my time with my Fitness coach Jacquie, the result that I am most proud of is my self - esteem is much higher. I have lost weight, lost inches and become much stronger, but more importantly, I feel much better about myself. I am proud of myself for working hard towards my goals of weight loss and because of that, I can hold my head up high.
Michelle: My goal was to lose weight and get into shape. My Fitness Coach Jacquie has helped me with my diet and getting into shape. She sends me emails of things I should be working on at home. She weighs me in once a week which holds me accountable to reach my goals.
Julie:
I wanted had wanted to "get in shape," lose weight and become more physical as well as learn how to eat better to stay healthier Our trainer Jacquie helped me obtain that. I have personally lost 10 lbs - gained muscle mass (yeah) and have gotten into clothes I have not worn in years. I am also eating healthier, feeling healthier and enjoying being more physical. Most everything she has taught us we can now implement to doing at home.
Rhonda: I have lost 10 pounds, I feel much better and have more confidence in myself. I am finally at a point where I just want to keep going to see bigger results. I am in a very high stress job so these workouts really have helped me get thru the day. I could not have done this on my own without my trainer Jacquie. How have the other individuals in your small group helped you reach your health and fitness goals? Jenni: Just knowing you are accountable to others makes me push harder. The girls in my group are my close friends and we have a blast working out together. We do not allow each other to make excuses.
Michelle: Having 2 or 3 other girls working out with you makes it easier to keep going. It is fun to be reaching your goals with others. When you're struggling they know what you are going through and are there to help and encourage.
Julie: If I did not have the others in my small group to answer to I would not be as successful as I am. None of us wanted to let the other one done so we all strived harder and all became successful together. We, Michelle, Jennifer Juarros and I, always rode to workouts together - talked about various ways to cut our calories as well as trying different foods.
Rhonda: By being a support group, if one is down you help get them motivated. Tell us something you've learned during your training sessions and apply to your everyday life.
Jenni: That eating healthy is very important. Jacquie has said many times that the time we spend away from the gym with exercise and nutrition is more important than the little time we are with her.
Michelle: That eating healthy and working out is a way of life. That every day you just have to make better choices of what you eat and do.
Julie: I have totally changed the way I eat, from the portion size, to what I eat; to the way it's prepared. This simple change was the start! I do not miss the burgers and fries and I am not starving. I also never knew how good you feel after a workout - a little sweat and hard work feels good.
Rhonda: By not giving up you have to keep going. Small steps turn into big results. You have to believe.
What would you share with other members who are considering joining the semi-private training program? Jenni: Commit and follow through!!! You are worth it!!! Michelle: It's good to be doing it with other people because it holds you more accountable and makes it more fun. It gives you more support because they have similar goals they are trying to achieve. Julie: Don't delay - start today - it is amazing! Rhonda: I would highly recommend the semi-private training. It's a chance me meet other woman trying to accomplish the same goal as you are and they can be your cheerleader. |

Better then coffee. That is what my opportunity as a trainer at Funktional Fitness brings to me. I joined the staff almost two years ago after bumping into my old workout buddies Jeremy and Luis. What transpired after that has changed my view of training and re sharpened my focus on helping people reach a funktional level of fitness.
I have had opportunities to be a guest instructor on the behalf of FunkFit for youth football camps. I will be given the opportunity to dive into building up our YouthFit program this summer during the summer training sessions. With all the wonderful opportunites provided to me by FunkFit, I can say nothing beats leading the group of dedicated GroupFit clients at 5am every morning. These members have not only raised their individual levels of fitness, they have made me raise my level as a trainer.
I think about my training life a few years back and I used to think I enjoyed training. Now I really know what its like to truly love what you do! As Jeremy always says, "Strive to be 1% better every day." Sorry 5:10ers thats 2% percent for you. Break is over we got work to do!

By Seth Godin
A tribe is any group of people, large or small, who are connected to one another, a leader, and an idea. For millions of years, humans have been seeking out tribes, be they religious, ethnic, economic, political, or even musical (think of the Deadheads). It's our nature.
Now the Internet has eliminated the barriers of geography, cost, and time. All those blogs and social networking sites are helping existing tribes get bigger. But more important, they're enabling countless new tribes to be born, groups of ten or ten thousand or ten million who care about their iPhones, or a political campaign, or a new way to fight global warming.
And so the key question: Who is going to lead us? The Web can do amazing things, but it can't provide leadership. That still has to come from individuals, people just like you who have passion about something. The explosion in tribes means that anyone who wants to make a difference now has the tools at her fingertips.
If you think leadership is for other people, think again; leaders come in surprising packages. Consider Joel Spolsky and his international tribe of scary-smart software engineers. Or Gary Vaynerhuck, a wine expert with a devoted following of enthusiasts. Chris Sharma leads a tribe of rock climbers up impossible cliff faces, while Mich Mathews, a VP at Microsoft, runs her internal tribe of marketers from her cube in Seattle. All they have in common is the desire to change things, the ability to connect a tribe, and the willingness to lead.
If you ignore this opportunity, you risk turning into a sheepwalker, someone who fights to protect the status quo at all costs, never asking if obedience is doing you (or your organization) any good. Sheepwalkers don't do very well these days.
Tribes will make you think (really think) about the opportunities in leading your fellow employees, customers, investors, believers, hobbyists, or readers. . . . It's not easy, but it's easier than you think.
