Thanks Mom..
By Jeremy Jones
May marks a special day during the year in which we celebrate all Moms. This year the special day falls on May 13th-Mother's Day. On this day, Mothers are showered with flowers and gifts and surprises from their children, husbands, and friends. All of these gifts are well deserved and often times, well earned. The day is all about Mom and showing your appreciation for everything she has done for you. Whether you live close or far, or are young or old, it is a great day to really spoil your Mom.
This gratefulness and appreciation should carry forward every day of the year. Don't just express your gratitude on Mother's Day. Your gratitude should be shared as if everyday was Mother's Day, because in essence, it is. As the quote on the top of this newsletter states, "No gift to your Mother can ever equal her gift to you-life." For this reason we are forever connected to our Moms. The fact that she brought you into this world is reason enough to show her appreciation on a daily basis. She walked around with you in her stomach for anywhere from 7-10 months and she fed you and nurtured you each step of the way. Your Mom has truly been there since day 1.
The gift of life she provided for you is far more worthy than any of the cards, flowers, balloons, or jewelry you get for her, but at the same time, she appreciates the very simple thought of you thinking about her. That's one of the wonderful things about Moms. They are so grateful for each and everything we do and continue to provide support and guidance and encouragement, no matter how old we get. Mom's look at everyday as Children's Day and we owe it to them to return the favor. Don't wait until Mother's Day to tell your Mother you love her and are thinking about her. Tell her today. And tell her everyday. When someone gives you the gift of life, everyday is Mother's Day; not just one Sunday in May.
Thank you to all of the Moms out there and of course a very special thank you to my own. Thank you for the gift of life and thank you for all you do on a daily basis. Enjoy your Mother's Day today, tomorrow, and the many days to come.

Rob's Ironman Time Improved By An Hour!
|
How did you find Funktional Fitness?
I found out about Funktional through my wife, Lynn. She was training with Joe 2 times a week. When she explained certain aspects of the workout: boxing, ropes, box jumps, beating on tires, etc... I was excited! More importantly, she was seeing great results regarding her fitness goals and was avoiding injury.
How has Funktional Fitness changed your life?
Funktional has provided me a fun, effective tool to attain my goals. These goals not only include athletic achievement but also a healthy professional environment. By incorporating high-intensity strength training and cardio using good form, I have been able to race and work more effectively.
What specific results or goals have you attained?
I recently finished by first Ironman 70.3 Triathlon at Tempe Town Lake. I blew away my goal time by over an hour and placed in the top 5 in my age group. My trainer Paige Fleischman focused on my weaknesses and helped me improve them.
What was your favorite thing about your last session?
During an especially brutal session of sliding bear crawls, Paige made me hallucinate... it was awesome!
Tell us something you take away from your time at Funktional Fitness and apply to your everyday life?
As a busy general and weight loss (bariatric) surgeon, I spend an inordinate amount of time in uncomfortable and non-ergonomic positions. Funktional training helped me strengthen weakened core areas and I have noticed a dramatic decrease in discomfort while working. In addition, many of my patients ask for fitness alternatives during their weight loss journey, and Funktional is a perfect option.
If someone out there is thinking about joining Funktional Fitness what would you say?
I would tell anyone... ANYONE, no matter what fitness level you are at, Funktional will afford you a great opportunity to improve fitness and adopt a healthy lifestyle
Tell the Funk-Nation a goal you are striving to attain?
Although I want to run a sub-3 hour marathon (3:06 is my personal record), I just want to continue to live, work, and race in a healthy and injury-free manner!

How did you find Funktional Fitness? Google! I was trying to find bootcamp-like classes to help me get back into shape, and stumbled upon the FunkFit website. It offered the flexibility and times that I needed, so I took advantage of the 7 GroupFit classes deal and have been here every since!
How has Funktional Fitness changed your life?
It has really been a positive lifestyle change. I started playing team sports when I was young and continued to be active throughout high school, but that quickly declined when I started college. I didn't think I was that out of shape until I had my first session at Funktional Fitness. It was a slap-in-the-face reality check. I was definition 'skinny fat.' Since starting here, I feel like I've gained a lot of my athletic ability back, but more importantly, am so much happier about myself physically and mentally.
What specific results or goals have you attained?
So many little miracles! I can run a funk lap without almost passing out (yes, true story). I can make it through a GroupFit warm up without feeling like dying. I can touch my toes now! I see arm muscles I don't think I've ever had. And I am so much stronger now than when I started. I actually have not lost any weight since starting, BUT have lost over 4% body fat! I've gained that weight back in muscle, and am much more toned.
What was your favorite thing about your last session?
Core and conditioning - love "workin' on my fitness" and leaving tired and sweaty!
Tell us something you take away from your time at Funktional Fitness and apply to your everyday life?
Glute activation! I sit at a desk all day, so I really try and make it a point to get up, walk around, and get moving throughout the day.
If someone out there is thinking about joining Funktional Fitness what would you say?
Try it! There are always great opportunities/deals for new clients, so take advantage. The team is so invested in helping you attain your goals, and they do it with a positive attitude and will continue to encourage you to push yourself further than you think you can. The people who work out here are also just as motivating! It's a great environment to be a part of, and if you just come to class, you'll see results!
Tell the Funk-Nation a goal you are striving to attain?
To continue to keep committed to investing in my health!

I was born and grew up in Batavia, IL about 30 miles west of Chicago (GO BEARS, GO HAWKS, GO BULLS!). Growing up, I was very much into art and also was passionate about sports. From a very young age I was involved in team sports such as soccer, basketball and track; soccer being my biggest and still is! When in middle school I became a distance runner, running "the mile" was my main focus. I ended up running a personal record of 5:40 in 8th grade and had some fun along the way. The transition to high school was not hard at all; the cross country coach there pretty much recruited me the first day.
Continuing to love and be involved in art, I also picked up architectural drafting and CADD as a hobby. I took and loved every art/drawing/CADD class I could; there is something about hands on work and creating things that sparks my interest. As for my after school athletics, I kept improving my times each year in both cross and track. Senior year I had the chance to compete against some of the best in the state at the mile and 2 mile. I ended up running a personal record of 4:40 in the mile and 9:58 just breaking the 10 minute barrier for 2. Cross country was a whole other beast, I loved running outdoors on all types of surfaces. Running a personal best of 15:40 for 5k at the regional meet, our top 7 team qualified for sectionals, and finished out the year just missing state but feeling good about what we accomplished as a whole.
Graduating high school I was uncertain what to do with the rest of my life, there were so many different paths I could take. Just before graduating a marine recruiter had told me about some options that I was seriously thinking about now that I was out of high school. I did everything I needed to do to become a machinist in the Marine Corps except swear in because I had changed my mind. Deciding to go to a local community college I was lucky enough to go on scholarship to Waubonsee community college in sugar grove, IL. There I started working toward majoring in architecture and wanted to minor in art eventually. Cross country, along with all my classes, was going great; but there was one day in particular that had more affect, on where I am now, than the rest. It consisted of a full morning of classes, than a long run at cross country practice, and finally a three hour evening class from 6pm until 9pm. I was in that CADD class and just thought to myself "is this really what I want to do as a career, do I really want to sit behind a desk all day"? After a long time thinking and talking with friends and family I decided to change my career path and study fitness leadership.
I eventually studied and got certified to be a fitness coach. I worked at a couple different gyms but was just feeling pressured to sell a meet quotas every month. My job became more about selling packages to meet my monthly goal instead of helping people reach their goals. I needed a change!
My dad, Lloyd, had been living in mesa for a few years and I came out to visit him March of 2011. My Dad loves groupon and had one to some personal training studio called Funktional Fitness the next city over. I decided to go with him to check it out. 3 months later I moved to the desert and was in studio training Jeremy and Luis and loving it. I want to continue to be a "student of the game" of fitness and learn all I can so I may help the clients of FunkFit all I can!

I started working in the fitness industry at age 17 in Washington D.C. after having a trainer myself to help rehabilitate a sports injury. I went on to work as a trainer for corporate health clubs for 7 years, working with a wide variety of clients, group classes, nutrition coaching, cardio assessments and programs. After a 2 year hiatus I missed working with my clients and cheering on their lifestyle changes every day. I came to Funktional Fitness at the recommendation of many of their clients and have loved every minute that I have already spent here. I enjoy new challenges in my own workouts and you'll usually find me jumping on a box or flipping a tire.
My other passion is cooking, and as a Paleo enthusiast I enjoy reworking recipes to fit a Paleo lifestyle. Check out the blueberry muffin in the Eating Clean section of the newsletter :)
I look forward to meeting all of you and am very proficient in performing heart rate zone tests. Please ask me for more information and we will get you on the schedule soon that way you can ensure you are working smarter, not harder.
See you at FunkFit!

By Chip and Dan Heath
Why is it so hard to make lasting changes in our companies, in our communities, and in our own lives? The primary obstacle is a conflict that's built into our brains, say Chip and Dan Heath, authors of the critically acclaimed bestseller Made to Stick. Psychologists have discovered that our minds are ruled by two different systems-the rational mind and the emotional mind-that compete for control. The rational mind wants a great beach body; the emotional mind wants that Oreo cookie. The rational mind wants to change something at work; the emotional mind loves the comfort of the existing routine. This tension can doom a change effort-but if it is overcome, change can come quickly.
In Switch, the Heaths show how everyday people-employees and managers, parents and nurses-have united both minds and, as a result, achieved dramatic results:
● The lowly medical interns who managed to defeat an entrenched, decades-old medical practice that was endangering patients.
● The home-organizing guru who developed a simple technique for overcoming the dread of housekeeping.
●The manager who transformed a lackadaisical customer-support team into service zealots by removing a standard tool of customer service
In a compelling, story-driven narrative, the Heaths bring together decades of counterintuitive research in psychology, sociology, and other fields to shed new light on how we can effect transformative change. Switch shows that successful changes follow a pattern, a pattern you can use to make the changes that matter to you, whether your interest is in changing the world or changing your waistline.
