Just Move
By Jeremy Jones
As you take a look at this month's quote, think about all of the different aspects of your life it can apply to. "It's important to get things right, but it's even more important to get things going." This take action statement came from a book I recently finished titled Millionaire Upgrade by Richard Parkes Cordock. How many times have you had the best intentions of starting something or achieving something, but you spend all of your time planning it out and researching it and studying the "what ifs" and the "why nots," and all of a sudden days, weeks, months, and sometimes years pass you by and you haven't accomplished a thing. This is also referred as paralysis by analysis. You spend so much time analyzing a project that you never actually take action to complete the project. Does this sound like your health and fitness goals? Did you have it all planned at out at the beginning of the year? You were going to go to the gym 3 times per week and you were going to run 2 times a week and you were going to hike 1 time per week. But then you figured you better buy some new workout shoes, and then you needed to research all of the local gyms, and then you wanted to study a map of all of the mountains in the valley. You've spent so much time researching and you have all of this great information and 1 week trial passes to gyms, but you haven't even worked out once. Your fitness goals aren't close to being reached and you are still in the same physical condition. Though several months have been wasted, the great news is you can choose to get on track today. An old Chinese proverb states the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The next best time is today. Use this same philosophy and take action on your fitness goals. Start moving and getting things going, and then continue to focus on getting things right. Here are 5 steps you can implement today to get things going and eliminate the "what ifs" and "why nots." Pick any of these and see if you can overcome the paralysis by analysis that has set in over the last few months. 1) Call 2-4 of your friends and ask them to meet you at the local park this weekend. Bring a Frisbee or a football and have some fun in the sun for 45-60 minutes. And no, you don't need to shop for Frisbee shoes or football cleats. Grab what you've got and go! 2) Do you remember that Ab Roller, or that Chuck Norris apparatus, or even that jumprope that's stuck in the corner of your garage? Grab one of the infomercial exercise tools you ordered months ago and put it to work for 20 minutes. Heck, even getting to it while moving things around and unburying it might be a workout in itself! 3) Fido, your family dog, is probably wondering what the rest of the neighborhood looks like. Grab his or her leash and go out exploring. See how many different street names you can walk by during a half-hour walk. Your heart and lungs will appreciate it and Fido will be happy to be somewhere other than the couch or the 10x10 patch of grass in your backyard. 4) When was the last time you re-arranged the furniture in your house, or better yet, vacuumed behind the couch and love seat? Put on some workout clothes, turn up the stereo, open the windows, and get to work! Set a timer for 10 minutes per room and see what you can get done. Your creativity will shine while your heart rate is increased and those exercise endorphins get released. Your family will appreciate the new look and your body will feel great. 5) Finally take advantage of that trial offer that's been sitting on your counter for months now and head to your local gym. Better yet, if you are in Gilbert, or close by, head to Funktional Fitness and take advantage of a 30 day trial that will get your body moving in every direction, your heart and lungs working as efficiently as they did while you were in high school, and all the while, meet others who are or once were in the same exact condition as you. Improve your fitness and meet new friends while traveling the "right" direction on your fitness path and having fun along the way.
There you have it. Try one of these or all of these. Don't worry about it being done exactly right, or wearing the exact right shoes or clothes, or finding the exact right place. Just get things going and move. The rest will work itself out along the way.
You may not have started your fitness journey 20 years ago, but the next best time to start is today.

How did you find Funktional Fitness?
I knew Luis and Jeremy from my previous gym. I had actually trained with Luis a few times there. When they opened their new gym my husband and I wanted to support them so we got me some training :)
How has Funktional Fitness changed your life?
I am definitely more fit and healthy! The trainers there are spectacular and they care about you and your overall health. I have learned so much on nutrition and keep learning more. I had worked out before but I had never seen the results I was able to see while working out at Funktional. Funktional has shown me how important core muscles are! And having a stronger core helps with everything especially with my back! I am a Dental Hygienist and have a yucky back from all of that leaning over and strengthening my core has helped me a lot with that :)
What specific results or goals have you attained?
Back in 2010, I got in the best shape of my life for my wedding. Kristina was awesome at motivating me and getting me to that point. I had finally reached my weight goal and was quite happy with just my overall strength and health. I have since had a baby and that has been a whole new set of goals! Kristina helped me through the pregnancy filling my head with lots of nutrition knowledge and helping with my workouts. The last few months of my pregnancy were brutal; I had SPD. (Pubis Symphysis Disorder-it's basically when your hips start to separate early). I could hardly walk and when I did, it was super painful. Often my poor hubby would have to carry me to bed or I would have to use crutches to get around the house, lol! Kristina totally worked my workouts around that and we did the best work outs that I could during those times. So, needless to say, not being able to do usual work outs the last few months of a pregnancy and then having to wait for the 6-week clearance after, did not do so well with the weight gaining department, lol! For the last 9 months Kristina has helped me ease my way back in to working out and helped me learn how to reactivate those poor core muscles that were stretched to beyond and back! She was super supportive and motivating. At first I never thought I was going to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight or strength. And now, I am back into my pre-pregnancy jeans! Yay! But I've still got a little more work to do and I want to keep going and get even stronger!
When was your last session and how did it go?
This past Monday and it was awesome! I love how we use our body and not just machines! The new equipment is great! We got to use the sand bags and new medicine balls during our work out! Kristina always pushes us to our fullest and I love that I can leave feeling like I gave it my all.
Tell us something you take away from your time at Funktional Fitness and apply to your everyday life?
The strength; especially core strength with my job. I also use the nutritional health to help eat better and to help make healthy choices for my family and me. I have a beautiful 13-year-old stepdaughter and 10-year-old stepson that I love to educate and that I love to teach how to make smart/healthy decisions on what to put into their bodies. I didn't have any of that when I grew up, so I want to make sure that I pass that on to my family. And my stepdaughter now gets excited if she's heard of a healthy recipe and she can't wait to share it with me :) My step kiddos and my hubby also get excited for me to show them all the different work out moves I learned and what we did at our work outs.
If someone out there were thinking about joining Funktional Fitness what would you say?
DO IT! They are awesome! They are different from some of these other places that just want you to do all of that crazy heavy lifting, etc. Funktional cares about educating you and giving you proper instruction so you can prevent injuries. They want to help you meet your goals and become stronger and healthier! They care about the person you are and they are more than just trainers, they are more like your family!
Tell the Funk-Nation a goal you are striving to attain?
I want to get back to my wedding body! I worked hard to attain that and that was when I was the happiest! I want to be back to that. I am close, but still got a little more work to do! My goal is to be back into my wedding dress by the time my baby turns a year old :)

Chris Kaufman GroupFit Member since November 2011 How did you find Funktional Fitness?
Liz Young told my mom about it- They work together, my parents joined and then I joined!
How has Funktional Fitness changed your life?
I had been doing this type of training for 2 years but it was only 2 days a week. To be able to go 6 days a week and to get such great nutritional information has made all the difference for me! Everyone at Funk Fit is so supportive and positive that I feel like I have a whole team behind me helping me to succeed!
What specific results or goals have you attained?
I'm getting leaner and stronger that I have ever been my whole life and this is just the beginning! I'm heading into uncharted waters here in body fat levels and my physique! It's exciting - it feels like Christmas every day and the best part is, unlike in years past, I don't have to starve myself to lose weight Its just happening!
What was your favorite thing about your last session?
Sara explained the squat with the medicine ball in a completely different way to the whole class and it connected with everyone in the class and before you know it everyone was squatting really low and using great form! I've never squatted that low holding weight!
Tell us something you take away from your time at Funktional Fitness and apply to your everyday life?
I feel like I don't have to be perfect outside of class that I just need to keep striving to be 1% better everyday! Plus, my husband is loving the results!
If someone out there is thinking about joining Funktional Fitness what would you say?
I would say don't think about it- just do it!!! The trainers at FunkFit are incredibly gifted in their ability to teach and encourage and yet at the same time are so down to earth and approachable that it makes you want to be like them and succeed!
Tell the Funk-Nation a goal you are striving to attain?
A six-pack abs!!!!

Joe Adams
Team Member Since April 2011
Happy April to All! We are now into the spring season and it looks like it is going to be a beautiful one full of possibilities. I hope you all find the possibility of that fit and healthy "you" that is so well deserved!
Throughout my 6 years as a personal trainer, I have done a lot. I have run marathons and taught others how to run their own races. I have gone from only leading physical training in the military to becoming a "hands on" teacher of fitness with people in the real world. I have helped people lose weight, gain weight, gain functionality and quality of life through guiding and facilitating workouts. It was a calling for me and drove me to get two degrees in the field, apply it to my own life, and to teach it as I do now in night classes for the National Personal Trainer Institute.
When I started working at Funktional Fitness a year ago, my training career needed some changes. I was contracted to do personal training out of a facility that ended up closing its doors; my dedicated clients needed a place to train, and I needed a fresh perspective in the personal training field. I came here loving the business model but unaware at how much more it had to offer. I was immediately struck by the "team" environment and the overwhelmingly positive feel. I knew this would be my home away from home.
I immediately set out to learn as much as I could about this new and dynamic way of training that we offer here, and I haven't stopped. It has been a joy learning new techniques, getting to be a regular GroupFit instructor, becoming Director of Youth Fitness, and applying these new techniques to my own workouts. In doing the latter I have achieved more fitness goals than I ever thought possible, maintained my health and physique, and have been able to keep up with the rest of the trainers here!
My goal here at Funktional Fitness is to bring my unique style of training into the team and help spread the discipline and drive that we all have here to the rest of the east valley. I think that our approach of teaching people how to react to and interact with their surrounding environment is a more practical approach at fitness than sitting on a piece of cardio equipment or using machine weights. The agility, power, strength and confidence that we give clients every day makes me feel like this is the right place for me. I hope that this year is a drop in the bucket and just a beginning of a long road with this amazing team, place and family.

Delivering Happiness: A Path to Profits, Passion, and Purpose
By Tony Hsieh
The visionary CEO of Zappos explains how an emphasis on corporate culture can lead to unprecedented success.
Pay new employees $2000 to quit. Make customer service the entire company, not just a department. Focus on company culture as the #1 priority. Apply research from the science of happiness to running a business. Help employees grow both personally and professionally. Seek to change the world. Oh, and make money too.
Sound crazy? It's all standard operating procedure at Zappos.com, the online retailer that's doing over $1 billion in gross merchandise sales every year.
In 1999, Tony Hsieh (pronounced Shay) sold LinkExchange, the company he co-founded, to Microsoft for $265 million. He then joined Zappos as an adviser and investor, and eventually became CEO.
In 2009, Zappos was listed as one of Fortune magazine's top 25 companies to work for, and was acquired by Amazon later that year in a deal valued at over $1.2 billion on the day of closing.
In his first book, Tony shares the different business lessons he learned in life, from a lemonade stand and pizza business through LinkExchange, Zappos, and more. Ultimately, he shows how using happiness as a framework can produce profits, passion, and purpose both in business and in life.
