A True March Madness Lesson
By Jeremy Jones
March quickly sprung upon us and has already been bringing some beautiful weather to the Phoenix area. March is actually one of my favorite times of year, not only because of the opportunity to get outside and enjoy some vitamin D, but also because in March, one of the most exciting sports tournaments occurs. That's right, March Madness is here again! Now although not everyone may be as avid of a fan as myself, the passion, teamwork, and lessons to be learned during this 64 team college basketball tournaments can be applied to every single person, in just about every aspect of life. One of the most important lessons is that of doing your part to help your team win. It could be your family, your co-workers, or your sports' team, but it is important to know how to contribute to your "team's" success.
In the Maxwell Daily Reader, John Maxwell best illustrates this lesson by telling the story of Lou Whittaker and his team's goal of hiking Mt. Everest. Enjoy:
HELP PEOPLE WIN
Helping another person to win is one of the greatest feelings in the world. I haven't met a person yet who doesn't like to win. And everyone I know who's made the effort to help others has said that it is the most rewarding part of life.
In 1984, Lou Whittaker led the first all-American team to the summit of Mt. Everest. After months of grueling effort, five members of the team reached the final campsite at twenty-seven thousand feet. With two thousand feet to go, Whittaker had a tough decision to make: He knew how highly motivated all five climbers were to stand on the highest point on earth. But two would have to go back to the previous camp, load up food, water, and oxygen, then return to the camp where they now met. After completing this support assignment, these two climbers would be in no condition to make a try for the summit. The others would stay in the tent that day, preparing for the summit attempt.
The first decision Whittaker made was to stay at the twenty-seven-thousand-foot camp to coordinate the team's activities. The next was to send the two strongest climbers down the mountain to get the supplies; it was the tougher job. The two weaker climbers would rest, renew their strength, and receive the glory of the summit.
When asked why he didn't assign himself the summit run, his answer showed his understanding of people and the strength of his leadership. He said, "My job was to put other people on top."
Whittaker understood that when people make the right decisions that help the team to achieve its goal, everybody wins.
--25 Ways to Win with People
MAKE IT YOUR JOB TO PUT OTHER PEOPLE ON TOP TODAY.
What can you do today to help someone else win? How can you be a leader like Lou Whittaker and make the decisions and perform the necessary actions to achieve success? The NCAA tournament will be here soon, and we will find out what college athletes will help their teams rise to the top. More often than not, the same characteristics that are demonstrated on the basketball court reveal themselves in everyday life too. I challenge you that whatever your "game" is, and whoever your "team" is, step up and be a leader and help other people win this month.
You will be amazed at how victorious you will feel yourself..

How did you find Funktional Fitness?
Google!! After a bad night where I spent 30 minutes in tears in my closet because nothing fit me I decided that was enough & started looking for a gym. I just wanted an inexpensive place to go & get some basic exercise. I landed on the 7 day trial for GroupFit & thought, why not. I signed up for my membership after 7 awesome workouts & pretty much never left!
How has Funktional Fitness changed your life?
In more ways than I can count! Daily work activities are easier & less painful. I have more energy & just overall feel better every day.
What specific results or goals have you attained?
So far I have lost just over 30 pounds! I have more muscles than I think I have EVER had. I still have a long way to go but I am getting closer every day.
When was your last session and how did it go?
I have personal training with Jared every Monday & try to hit the Group Fit's the rest of the week at 5pm. Every session is always great & always finds a new way to push me just a little farther out of my comfort zone which is great. And Jared is awesome because he really knows how to help me correct movements & teach me how to do things the right way!
Tell us something you take away from your time at Funktional Fitness and apply to your everyday life?
As most of you know, I work for myself & sit at my desk anywhere between 10-12 hours a day. What I realize is that I have bad posture & sit in ways that cause most of the low back pain I have. I have learned proper posture and how I should be sitting at my desk to keep my back from hurting. It's been an amazing revelation because now I catch myself sitting "wrong" and correct myself all the time & all of my back pain is gone!!
If someone out there is thinking about joining Funktional Fitness what would you say?
Easy, DO IT!!!! Every person in this building is amazing - from the trainers to Erin, Melody and everyone at the desk. You aren't a number or just another member here - you are a person & a name!! No matter what is going on someone always has time to help you out with something or answer a question or give you that extra little push you need. This is not a typically gym by any standards & that is what makes this place so great!!
Tell the Funk-Nation a goal you are striving to attain?
Health for a lifetime!! I would like to lose another 40-50 pounds and gain some much needed muscle. I want to continue to develop a diet plan I can live with and maintain for the rest of my life & not just a fad diet that is impossible.

How did you find Funktional Fitness?
I found Funktional Fitness through a Groupon offer. I was looking for a place that offered TRX classes and after discovering that Funftional Fitness had TRX, I bought the Groupon.
How has Funktional Fitness changed your life?
I had lost about 25 pounds but was having low back problems and just feeling weak before Funktional Fitness. Since joining in July 2011, I have toned and developed muscles I didn't even realize I had. I feel better, can keep up with my daughters, and I'm not as worried about how much I lift. I have learned the correct way to lift and if my back does give me trouble it doesn't feel debilitating and I recover so much faster.
What specific results or goals have you attained?
The results I have seen include an additional 10 pounds lost, much improved endurance and heart health. Using the Polar team strap system during Groupfit I have seen my heart rate recover faster lately. I have also started running as encouraged in the Groupfit warm ups and completed my first 5K in February. I'm planning on it being only one of many.
When was your last session and how did it go?
My last session was last night TRX (my favorite)! It went great, did notice that my hips were tired from sitting at my desk all day. It felt great to be moving and loosening up.
Tell us something you take away from your time at Funktional Fitness and apply to your everyday life?
I take away a sense of accomplishment that I made it through another session as well as, an I can do it attitude! Especially if I added more weight or completed more sets. Striving to be 1% better every day in all that I do!
If someone out there is thinking about joining Funktional Fitness what would you say?
Join! It is a fun environment with lots of encouragement and variation.

Happy March "Funktional Madness" to all of you out there! I hope all of you reach your March fitness goals and for those of you on the Paleo 30 - day challenge, congratulations for trying something new. I am sure you have all learned something about self discipline and focus.
This month, I am celebrating my one year anniversary with Funktional Fitness. I have had an outstanding year and have learned more about myself then I had ever planned to. I have also hit a pretty cool benchmark. Since March of 2009, three years ago, I have kept off almost 100 pounds. It took me close to a year and a half (prior to that) to lose it. It has taken continued discipline and focus and I have realized there will be a constant awareness the rest of my life. Trying new workout regimens, learning new means & methods, enlightening myself to fresh ideas, and trying a new nutrition plans "IS" a way of life for me if I want continued success.
If I ever chose to become idle, those 100 pounds, or the weak cardiovascular system, or the aching joints, the headaches, the angriness, the depression, basically ALL the negatives from being obese are bound to creep back over time.
Vigilance IS a daily focus for me. BUT, I want to share that it is fun and it is rewarding. I love "the new me!" I have continued to have a blast with what this body can do. It isn't hard work anymore and it isn't painstaking. Learning new skills to benefit Funktional has become a joy to do, like recently earning a certificate as a basic TRX Suspension Trainer instructor. Hiking mountains with a 25 pound weight vest isn't so hard to do these days, taking tennis lessons, and even planning a Grand Canyon hike this spring are all examples of physical activities that are welcome to do instead of thinking that only other "fit" people can do them. There is nothing I can't do- is my new mantra.
Trying a new nutrition plan is even more important. Sometimes, we don't even know that the foods we are eating are causing us to plateau, or feel sluggish, or cause mood swings until we get them out of our daily plan. In the last five years, I have constantly changed my nutrition plan. I have altered and added, challenged and fasted, never "dieted," and had the best of success and fun doing so.
Discipline has become fun! Trying new physical activities and nutritional plans is empowering!
Never stop making your body your priority, your most precious vessel, your health weapon!! Always wear your "armor of fitness" and never stop getting better.

Paleo Chicken Fajitas

Fajitas are a classic in Tex-Mex cuisine and are adored universally by kids and adults alike. The classic fajita calls for skirt steak and is served with a choice of toppings over corn or flower tortilla, but this paleo take on the classic fajita meal is just as delicious without the tortilla. Today, fajitas are also commonly prepared with pork, chicken or shrimp and the usual vegetables include bell peppers and onions. Enjoy making a big batch and pleasing the whole family with this classic do it yourself dinner. This recipe serves about 5 people, but be sure to make more for leftovers.
Ingredients
- 3 lbs chicken breast, cut in thin strips;
- 3 bell peppers;
- 3 onions, sliced;
- 2 tbsp oregano, chili powder, cumin and coriander;
- 6 chopped garlic cloves;
- Juice of 5 lemons;
- 4 tbsp cooking fat (coconut oil, tallow or ghee are excellent here);
- Butter lettuce to serve;
- Your choice of toppings: diced tomatoes, fermented pickles, sauerkraut, sliced avocados, salsa, guacamole, and/or salsa
Preparation
- Combine the chicken, bell peppers, onions, spices, garlic and lemon juice in a bowl and mix well;
- If preparing ahead of time, let marinate in the refrigerator for about 4 hours.
- When ready to cook, heat a large skillet on medium heat and cook the whole preparation with the cooking fat until the chicken is cooked through and the onion and bell pepper are soft.
- Put the hot chicken preparation in a large bowl and let the people prepare their own fajitas on top of lettuce leaves with their favorite toppings.
If you enjoy this dish from the Paleo Recipe Book, be sure to ask your FunkFit coach about other healthy and tasty Paleo recipes.
