What is Your Why?
By Jeremy Jones
How many times do you sit down and night and can't even remember what you did earlier in the day, what your workout entailed, or even what you had for lunch? The world is filled with so much stimuli, so many things happening every minute, that if you aren't aware of your present surroundings you will get caught up in the whirlwind. Before you know it, a week has passed, and then a month, and then a year, and then all of a sudden you get caught wondering where in the heck has time gone? Figuring out your "why" for doing things will provide you with all 60 seconds every minute, and all 60 minutes every hour, and of course, all 24 hours every day. Most of us don't realize this time is called the PRESENT.
Why are you reading this article right now? Have you caught every word or have you already forgotten what the first paragraph was all about? STOP right now, and ask yourself why. Maybe it's because you were interested in the title, maybe you enjoy reading, or maybe you are hoping to learn something you can apply to your everyday life. All of these are great reasons why; it's just important to be aware of your reason. Being aware of this reason will keep you in the PRESENT as opposed to aimlessly passing time. Now this is just a simple example, but think about how "why" really applies to every aspect of your life.
Why do you get up and go to work every morning? Is it what you do, or do you really know why you do it. Your answer is unique from everyone else's, but do you know your own answer, or has work just become something you hurriedly wake up and speed to every morning before speeding throughout the day and then speeding back home to the couch? Why do you choose your job for your profession? Why do you enjoy it, or for many people, why don't you enjoy it? Pause in the PRESENT time and see if you can answer these questions for yourself.
Why do you workout and try to eat nutritiously? Or in a lot of cases, why do you choose to eat poorly? Figuring out your "why" when it comes to your health is the single most important thing you can do for yourself and for your family, friends, and co-workers. If you are unaware of your "why," it becomes real easy to skip your workout for the day, or to stop at that fast food restaurant for lunch and dinner, or to simply do nothing about your health at all. Again, without your "why," the whole day speeds by you and unhealthy excuses, decisions, thoughts, and actions become the 'what' you do as opposed to you staying in the PRESENT and remaining focused on "why" you do.
Why does Funktional Fitness exist? Our "why" is our passionate commitment to helping each and every person who walks through the doors to become 1% better every single day. For some it might be nutritiously, others functionality. Some it might be mentally, others spiritually. For some it might be all of the above, and others may have their own reason why they are a part of the FunkFit community. But the important part is knowing what your "why" is. So before you attend your next private training session, or your next GroupFit session, I challenge you to know your "why," and to perform your workout in the PRESENT, enjoying every repetition, every drop of sweat, every healthy characteristic you are adding to your life, every 1% you are attaining.
The more you continue to focus on your "why" in every aspect of your life you will be amazed at your progress, your growth, your drive to reach your goals, and even the strengthening of your relationships with others. You will realize that doing things with a purpose is quite the PRESENT for you every single day.
Why wouldn't you enjoy that!?

How did you find Funktional Fitness?
I'd had the opportunity to train with Jeremy for several years, prior to him opening up "Funktional Fitness"! I was very anxious to see what exciting challenges lie ahead in his "new" facility!
How has Funktional Fitness changed your life?
After my first session with Jeremy, I said, "Sign me up, Coach"!! I knew this was where I wanted to continue my journey in reaching my fitness goals. I've been an avid athlete my whole life, and with Jeremy's knowledge, sincerity and genuine passion for his trade, has helped educate and motivate me to reach and surpass many of those! Jeremy's positive, enthusiastic energy in helping me live a longer, healthier lifestyle is "infectious"! I look forward to each and every session I have with him and walk away with an appetite for more!!!
What specific results or goals have you attained?
Jeremy, and many other Funkfit Team Members, have helped to educate me down a healthy nutritional path as well. I now realize, that I can't live on "M & M's" alone! I've learned the importance of eating that morning meal, and how to fuel before, during and after a hard workout. In general, making healthier food choices on a daily basis and feeling great! I receive at least "1" compliment a day, about having runners leg's, or just what great shape I'm in! That being said, you bet I'm going to work hard on striving to be 1% better each day!
Describe one of your most recent training sessions.
My last session with Jeremy was amazing, as always! From "Box Jumps" to "Burpee's," I'm impressed with how he continues to change things up, making each session productive and fun! I truly appreciate his sincerity in keeping me focused on reaching all of my fitness goals. Jeremy has a true passion for his trade, and I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with him and absorb his knowledge on a weekly basis!
Tell us something you take away from Funktional Fitness and apply to your everyday life.
I incorporate some kind of physical activity or nutrional information into my schedule everyday. Not only for myself, but to share with others, the knowledge I've gained at Funkfit. I enjoy when fellow "gym rats" or people in general, ask me about my success and how I achieved these goals. It gives me the opportunity to help encourage them, to be the best they can be!
If someone out there is thinking about joining Funktional Fitness, what would you say?
Funktional Fitness is a unique studio! The "positive energy" you feel, just walking thru the doors is contagious! I can truly say, that the entire Funkfit Team, is passionate about their work, and willing to help you reach your fitness goals! Regardless of who you're training with, each team member is there for you! "Funkfit" is like a family, all striving to reach the same goal! I've also enjoyed the Group Run's, Crazy Races and numerous activities that they invite any member to participate in! If you're not afraid of a little hard work and a lot of fun, you'll really enjoy your journey to a Healthier Lifestyle!
Share with everyone a goal you are striving to attain?
I want to stay focused and continue down the road I've traveled here at FunkFit! I feel good about what I've been able to achieve: including Pat's Run's, ½ Marathon's, Warrior Dash, Urbanathalon, Climbing Camelback numerous times, all at my age is a treat! Even beating a few of the youngsters! I want to share and encourage others with my success here at Funktional Fitness, so they too, can learn how to live longer, healthier lifestyles!!

Terry Johnson GroupFit Client since August 2011 | | Terry's 30+ pound loss keeps him playing with his grandchildren! |
I started funktional Fitness back in August of 2011. At that time I was the heaviest i had ever been. I was feeling tired all the time and my diet was any and all fast food. I wanted to get my athletic self back. After the first private session I had with Jared I was hooked! He totally ground me up, pushing me to do more. I loved it, this place was for me! Since my start date I have lost 34+ lbs and gone from a 38 inch waist to 34 inch. I was taking Lipitor, now I don't, and I have more energy throughout the day. This place has changed my life.
Funktional fitness has taught me the importance of incorporating a clean diet along with GroupFit classes for overall health. I can tell you that this would not be possible without the support of the great staff at Funktional. The support and personal touch that you get the minute you walk in the door is phenomenal. The staff is so supportive and encouraging. I look so forward to my GroupFit sessions! They are always challenging and fun and are always changing it up. My future goals are to challenge myself to get stronger and leaner so I can keep up with my grandkids! Thanks to everyone at Funk Fit for encouraging me to do my best. | | Terry Before FunkFit |

| Intern Spotlight |
Samantha King
Hi everyone! My name is Samantha King and I am the new intern here at Funktional Fitness. I am from Gilbert Arizona where I currently reside and graduated from in 2008. I played volleyball for four years and also ran track for two seasons at Gilbert High. I started my freshman year of college at South Mountain Community College in Phoenix where I played volleyball for a year. I then decided to go out of state to continue to play at a higher level and received a full ride scholarship to Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Oklahoma. I am in my final semester of my senior year and I am an Exercise Science major. My internship is the last step for my Bachelor's Degree and I am so excited to be completing it at Funktional Fitness. The type of training taught here and the friendly environment really stood out to me and that is why I decided to chose FunkFit as my internship site. I have been participating in sports and exercise since I was very young and my love for it has grown into my future profession upon graduating in May. I plan on attending Arizona State University or University of Arizona to begin my Master's of Science for the next two years. My final career goal is to begin working in corporate fitness where I would love to become a health promotion specialist. I am looking forward to all the knowledge I will be gaining over the next three months and the chance to meet all of our great FunkFit clients!

Peter Hirsh Funktional Team Member since January 2012
Peter Hirsh was born just outside of London, England and moved to the U.S. when he was 12 years old. Many factors throughout his life have led him to the career path of Holistic health in which he's been involved in for over 8 years. One of which is the philosophy and methodology behind functional movement and the importance of working with your unique biology. "I teach people how to be healthy - achieve homeostasis; not how to lose weight or build muscle, those are the benefits of becoming healthy." Peter's goal is for everyone that he works with to achieve balance, and avoid the excessive amount of dysfunction in the 'Fitness Industry'.
"Health can't be found in a lab, or on a machine, it comes from working with nature, not against it."

Born to Run
By Christopher McDougall
Isolated by Mexico's deadly Copper Canyons, the blissful Tarahumara Indians have honed the ability to run hundreds of miles without rest or injury. In a riveting narrative, award-winning journalist and often-injured runner Christopher McDougall sets out to discover their secrets. In the process, he takes his readers from science labs at Harvard to the sun-baked valleys and freezing peaks across North America, where ever-growing numbers of ultra-runners are pushing their bodies to the limit, and, finally, to a climactic race in the Copper Canyons that pits America's best ultra-runners against the tribe. McDougall's incredible story will not only engage your mind but inspire your body when you realize that you, indeed all of us, were born to run.
