This Sunday the Gospel reading from John 6 contrasts death with life, a life that comes from eating Christ, the Bread of Life. Come. Worship. Receive Christ and, John says, never be hungry again.

Prayer List
Start a practice of praying for the Chapel community this week -- around the table before a meal, before bedtime, in the morning as you prepare to depart for a busy day.
Use this list and remember those in need. We invite your prayers:
Those who grieve, especially the family and friends of Charlie Witmer, Tallahassee, who died Thursday following a long bout with cancer
Those affected by the shootings at the Sikh temple in Oak Creek, WI, especially the loved ones of those who were killed; and for those who continue to grieve those killed in the shooting in Aurora, CO
Those affected by the oil refinery fire in Richmond
Those who have cancer: Linda Afdahl, recently diagnosed with skin cancer; Arlene, Betty, Miriam Brustuen, Jennifer Doebler's brother Scot, David Robertson, Brian Stone, and Ray Stumpf, and those who care for them; those who research to find a cure and those who pray for a miracle
Healing for Sabine Freudiger (cousin of Ted Grantham) who does not have health insurance and is suffering from severe knee pain that keeps her from working, 8-month-old baby Annabelle who will undergo more heart surgery this week, Jonathan Partsch recovering from surgery, Martha, Gregorio recovering from surgery following gunshot wounds, JR, David, Foy, Laura Johnson, Jackson's friend Matt, and Troy
The DREAMERS on their journey

| Come and See - Palestine | |
"Come and see!" It was a phrase we heard from many people on our delegation to the Holy Land. Come and see the sites that are sacred to Muslims, Christians, and Jews.
Just yesterday, I returned to the Chapel from my trip to Palestine sponsored by Bright Stars of Bethlehem. I joined 14 other Lutheran pastors for a ten day whirlwind excursion where we visited many sites important to the story of Jesus -- Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Jerico, the Sea of Galilee, Capernaum, Cana, Magdala, Nazareth, Caesarea, and the Mounts of Olives, Temptation, Beatitudes, Transfiguration!
As our host Pastor Mitri Raheb said, we literally "ran where Jesus walked!" Read more and preview pictures here!
You too can come and see! Come early on Sunday, August 19 (9:30 am before our 11 am liturgy) to hear stories, see slides, and continue a conversation about ways in which we might accompany these sisters and brothers in the months and years ahead.
As Pastor Ashraf Tounnus from Redeember Lutheran Church in the Old City of Jerusalem reminded us, "Be not pro Palestinian, but be not pro Israel either. Be pro justice, pro reason, pro humanity, pro hope, and pro peace. Come and see!"

| Vigil at the Detention Center |
 | | STOP The ICE HOLDS (West Contra Costa County) Richmond, CA |
Carmen and many of our friends from the interfaith coalition went to pray and protest outside the West Contra Costa County Detention Facility where ICE detainees are held, to demand that Contra Costa County discontinue honoring ICE holds that lead to high deportation rates and take steps to protect due process for immigrants.
According to ICE statistics, 79% of people deported from Contra Costa County by the Secure Communities program of ICE had minor or no criminal charges.

| Spiritual Nomads |

When we read the Gospels in worship, we typically encounter a Jesus in his early 30s: a young adult, something of a spiritual nomad, moving in and out of places of worship.
Yet for a church so focused on the ministry of this young adult, we're often perplexed by questions about young adults in worship. What are today's young adult spiritual nomads seeking in worship? Why aren't more of them in worship? Read more online or see the article "Spiritual Nomad" in our copy of The Lutheran in the magazine stand at the Chapel! |

| Confirmation Curriculum | |
Meet Moses, the frustrated leader.
Though Moses is a murderer in exile, God walks alongside him as he stumbles into positions of (reluctant) leadership, guiding the Hebrew people out of slaves into the Promised Land.
Our fall confirmation curriculum focuses on Unlikely People - Extraordinary Stories.
Classes start on September 5th at 6:30pm at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church.
