Third Sunday of Pentecost
June 2012

NOTE: we are on summer schedule, liturgy begins at 10 am

This coming Sunday we hear a reference to the cosmic tree of life in which are nesting all the birds of the air. Yet what we gather around is the cross of Christ. Come be a bird on this tree.

It is also Father's Day when we give thanks for all of those who have parented us, and especially our fathers who have loved and cared for us.

Prayer List

Start a practice of praying for the Chapel community this week -- around the table before a meal, before bedtime, in the morning as you prepare to depart for a busy day. Use this list and remember those in need. We invite your prayers:

For our community

For all who grieve

For all recovering from surgery

For those who have cancer

In thanksgiving for our neighbor, Azam

For Carmen our new intern and her discernment team, Judy, Don, Sarah, and Emma

For Jennifer's brother Scot, David, Arlene, JR, Brian, David, Foy, Steve and Jan, Ron and Rachel, Nathan and Erin, Betty, Jonathan, Margaret, David and Sally, Laura, Lucas' mother, Jackson's friend Matt, Charlie, Ray, and Troy.

For those who are traveling and vacationing that they may be safe and enjoy their adventures

Social Justice vote

social justice

The Social Justice team is in the process of determining its priorities for 2012. Our team is making this process external this year because we want to make sure that we know the issues that the Chapel cares about and to develop a process around the social justice allocation in the budget.

Determining the chapel's priority areas is the first step in that process.

Please vote here before June 17th!

Father's Day support

This Father's Day please help us support immigrant fathers who were fired from Pacific Steel last fall due to their documentation status.

We can help out these fathers and their families through contributing to their rent fund or hiring them for various jobs and projects.

The workers want to work and have many skills. Consider hiring one of them workers to do

painting, construction, renovation, gardening and other work.

Take a look at the flyer and see how you can help this Father's Day!

Reconciling Works survey

Our own Social Justice team is not the only one looking for our opinions. Reconciling Works - formerly called Lutherans Concerned - is conducting a survey on the ELCA's social justice statements and priorities.

Here is the link to complete their survey online.

Madre Guadalupe at the Chapel

Please join SHARE El Salvador and the Chapel's Social Justice Committee in welcoming

2005 Nobel Peace Prize Nominee

"Madre" Guadalupe Mejia Delgado

Madre Guadalupe was nominated as part of the 1,000 Women of Peace Initiative.

DREAM Act announcement

Exciting news!

Obama is about to announce that they will STOP deporting DREAMers!

So please call the White House today and say Thank You this important decision!

Tell them you support them in this decision and are spreading the word that they did the right thing! (202) 456-1111.

Welcome Carmen!

Thanks to Judy Turley, Don Green, Sarah Berg, and Emma Reggio, for serving on the discernment team for our intern, Carmen Miranda.

Carmen will be with us full time through the summer and then part time as the semester gets underway.  Her team will assist her in discerning her call to ministry and help her integrate with her work here in this parish.

Welcome Carmen.  The Chapel has done significant intentional thinking about "discernment" which is reflected in this planning document, thanks Team!

Youth Engagement, Advocacy and Housing (YEAH) supports young adults aged 18-25 who are currently homeless in Berkeley. The average age they became homeless is 15 1/2 and most have no source of income.

YEAH provides them with shelter and works to reunite them with family or move them into permanent housing.

We are happy to support YEAH through donation. Take a look at their Thank You letter!
