First Sunday in Lent
February 2012
first sunday in lent

Sunday is the first Sunday in the season of Lent (click for a wonderful article) and during the liturgy we will learn about an advocacy letter campaign by Bread for the World.

Confronting the problem of hunger and poverty can seem overwhelming. What can one person do? Plenty! And as a community we can do even more. Chapel member, Steve Hitchcock, who is a Bread for the World staff person, will show us how.

Additionally, DREAM ACT students will be worshipping with us, and the Green Team will introduce it's plan to "lay down your toxic burden" during Lent!  Don't miss it.

small groups
At the Chapel, Small Groups allow us to build new friendships, to discover new interests, and to grow both individually and as a community.  If you are not a part of one, think of joining this Lent!

We have openings in already established groups such as the Green Team and a some new groups like the Post-Feminist Radical Men's Hospitality Team and the Lenten Monasteries of the Heart group.

Check out the
sign up sheet and write down your name and email address underneath the groups that interest you.  Nancy Ulmer, our coordinator of small groups will contact you!

New Chapel Council

council 2012Congratulations to our newly elected council members! Meet our new council:

I have been a member of ULC long enough that I have raised my grown children in this faith community.  The Chapel has been at the center of our faith life and is our spiritual home.  My work in the world is as a psychotherapist and professor.  I am both excited and humbled to assume the role of president of this inspired, passionate, and oftentimes opinionated community.

I grew up in Berkeley, CA and attended Sunday School and confirmation at ULC. I'm happy to be serving on the council working to enhance the chapel experience for kids, their families and everyone. I work at Youth Radio in Oakland.

I have been a member of ULC for the last 4 years and on council for the last two.  I enjoy basketball, comic books and riding my bike downhill.  Sometimes I also teach and do research in a joint PhD program at UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco.

Luis Ramirez (elected to be Treasurer)

I moved from Florida with Emma around mid-2008. Since then I became part of the council and it has been very exciting to become friends and grow together with the Chapel's community.

I have been blessed to be a Chapel member since 2007.  I am past Council President and a life long Lutheran.  In my professional life I am a Leadership coach. You might know me as Russell's Grandpa.

I first came to the chapel in college and last year I became a member. This summer I am going to marry my best friend Mike. We both love skiing, hiking and building furniture for our house in Alameda.

Judy Spiegel (not pictured)

I have been coming to the Chapel for over half a century and the Church has taught me everything worth knowing!!!!

Jonathan Partsch  I have been coming to the chapel since 2004. I work as an environmental geologist in the east bay.

Additionally, Margaret Moreland (elected to be Financial Secretary) and Sam Kanenwisher, are members of the Council this year.

Thank you to all of you for serving in this way.

Thank You from Bob Wohlsen
thank you note

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Thank you for the unexpected gift of the dinner at Berkeley's Revival Bar and Kitchen. It's a lively scene downtown near the theaters with really good food, wine, and service. Miriam and I celebrated Valentine's Day there. It has been my joy to serve you as President of the Council. Your generous giving of this gift and your time and talents to our "At Work in the World" and the caring ministry you share with me, each other, and the greater community is much appreciated and inspiring.

Peace be with you, Bob & Miriam
