Prayer List

During the week, we invite your prayers this week for those in need in our community and around the world, including:

For our parish as we lean forward gracefully into a new future

For Duane as he recovers from surgery

For Bishop Mark Holmerud as he recovers from a successful surgery

For the DREAMERS as they prepare to walk to Washington DC

For Brach our new teaching parish student

For all who are looking for work

For all who are in transition or discernment

For all who are in jail

For all who mourn, especially April and her family, Miriam and Bob and their family, Brian and Marsha and their family

For those celebrating birthdays and anniversaries

Think about starting a new habit of prayer with your family this week -- around the table before a meal, before bedtime, in the morning as you prepare to depart for a busy day.
Chapel News

New chapel administrator

Annika Mongan introduces herself

In January of this year I have had the pleasure of joining the staff at University Lutheran Chapel as the new office administrator. I was born and raised in Germany where my uncle as well as two of my cousins are Lutheran pastors.

I first came to the US twelve years ago to study theology and upon graduation joined a traveling ministry. Two years ago I moved to California and am very excited about the welcome I have received at the Chapel.

It has been great bringing my "German" love for organization to the office and learning more about the chapel and its community. When I am not creating bulletins, sorting files, or trouble-shooting copy machines, I usually turn into a bean-to-bar chocolatier. I am looking forward to meeting many of you in person on Sunday mornings or Thursday evenings - that is, whenever I am not elbow deep in a big vat of fair-trade chocolate.

The Dream Act

Dream Act students meeting at the Chapel

Dream Act students
The Dream Act students will be using the facilities of the Chapel in the coming weeks to prepare for their 3000 mile walk across the country starting in San Francisco next month.

We are excited to be their first stop on March 10th. They will be sleeping over here at the Chapel and we'll be providing breakfast and dinner!  Please visit the Campaign for an American DREAM website for their profiles and ways in which we can support them on their mission.

Crop Walk
Join us for the 2012 Berkley Crop Hunger Walk
Crop Hunger WalkCome join us for the Berkeley CROP Walk this year on April 29th. CROP Hunger Walks help children and families worldwide - and right here in the U.S. - to have food for today, while building for a better tomorrow. This is coordinated by Vy Nguyen who has his office with Church World Service here at the chapel.

Sign up online or contact Jen Afdahl-Rice for more information.

Libro Traficante
Banned books are being smuggled back into Arizona

Ok, it's a little bit hard to believe.  But, Arizonia has banned a list of books, including for example, Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya.  People who are appalled by this are organizing a caravan of cars, full of activists, writers, and their books which will be heading soon from Houston, TX, to Tucson, AZ.

It's cargo: books that have been banned by the Tucson Unified School District (TUSD). The event is called  'Libro Traficante' --which translates from Spanish to 'BookTrafficker'-- is set to take place between March 12th-18th.  Check out the site to support this caravan.
