Mindfulness Meditation with Lori Wong
Monday Evenings, 6:30-8:30pm
A Six Week Series
Starting July 16 at the Unity Center
2025 W. March Lane, Suite 5
"Mindfulness meditation is a practice in which we pay attention to ordinary experiences: mental states of mind, internal talk and thoughts, physical and emotional body sensations.
"In doing so, we find that these experiences can be understood energetically in the body. The skill that develops in not becoming reactive to our experience cultivates well-being.
This class is offered on a "Dana" or generosity basis.
Lori Wong has been practicing mindfulness meditation since 2003 and is a Community Dharma Leader in training through Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Woodacre, CA. Her mentor teachers in the program are Gil Fronsdal of Insight Meditation Center in Redwood City and Eugene Cash of SF Insight in San Francisco.

Minister's Letter
Dear Friends,
Often there is an idea bubbling up in consciousness everywhere we look. When this happens, there are books and workshops and events in our lives to help us learn what is "up" for all.
There is one idea that I have encountered recently in many places and on many levels. It is the idea of "connection" with other people by building "social and emotional intelligence". Can you imagine being able to express our feelings and to get our needs met consistently? Can you imagine this for our society?
Congressman Tim Ryan talks about this in a new book, "A Mindful Nation"; and and I found it as a basic theme in a 4 day workshop at Unity of Walnut Creek called "BePeace" which I attended last week. Some of the techniques from HeartMath and NVC (Non-Violent Communication) were powerfully combined.
Individually and in communities we are learning how to express ourselves with clarity of emotion in social interactive situations in a way where we find our voice, and everyone benefits! At BePeace, we practiced communicating with an open and soft heart in such way that we witnessed miracles, over and over.
It all begins with powerfully balancing head and heart. Some people call it meditation, but then this word sometimes scares people off. What if it was as simple as centering one's attention in one's heart, breathing deeply and slowly as if through their heart, and when calm quietly embracing a sense of well-being and happiness from a particularly happy memory? What if it was as simple as asking our "heart" a question for guidance and listening to the answer?
The most exciting part is that Unity of Stockton is a good place to learn and practice all of this! Yes, we will stumble and do not succeed at times, but overall we support, learn, and make progress together!
In this summertime, let us celebrate our connections!

Book Review from our Bookworm:
A Mindful Nation
by Congressman Tim Ryan
In 2002, Tim Ryan was elected to Congress from Ohio. Within the week he attended a mindfulness-based stress reduction workshop with Jon Kabat-Zinn. Since then his life has been changed by his daily practice of meditation, including how he approaches the wide range of issues that face every politician in this country. The book illustrates his perspectives on child care, education, our health care system, the military, our economy and how meditation can help ourselves individually and our country as a whole.
The book has an extensive list of resources for mindfulness training, applied mindfulness and mindful social action, including many online resources. If you are contemplating the future of our country and what possibilities exist for us as we create our political reality, Tim Ryan's book is worth of a serious read. Enjoy!! |
