hello from milkmakers

delicious cookies that boost milk supply and replenish key nutrients moms need.

It's the time of year to be thankful and eat some delicious food, which is why it's the perfect time to introduce our new organic cookie. We have already begun using organic ingredients in our oatmeal chocolate chip cookies... soon you will see new bags and new information on our website. Our oatmeal raisin cookies will soon become organic as well.

The organic milkmakers cookie offers the same nutritional power and key ingredients to boost your breastmilk supply as the original milkmakers lactation cookie, but being made with organic ingredients, it's even better for you, your baby, and the environment -- now that's something a mom can be thankful for!

We've included an informational (and very cute!) video demonstrating just how great organic is for you and dietitian/mother of one Julie Church, offers some nutritional advice for you as this month's Real Mom.

Also, our lactation consultant Renee Beebe M.ed., IBCLC weighs-in on some tips for breastfeeding when dealing with the added stress of the holidays and we offer you a chance to win some super comfortable nursing pads made by Bamboobies that effortlessly stop leaks.

breastfeeding during the holidays: the impact of stress and how to handle it

reneebebee
Renee Bebee, M.Ed., IBCLC

Back in the day, before I was an IBCLC, I spent hours on the phone as a La Leche League Leader, listening to and trying to help breastfeeding mothers. My sister leaders and I were very active with 2 group meetings per month which were attended by 10-20 women per meeting. It was not unusual for me to talk on the phone with several mothers each day of the week. After a year or 2 of this work, I began to notice a trend. During major holidays, there was a huge increase in the number of calls about plugged ducts, mastitis and milk supply.

I discussed this with more experienced leaders in my town. "Yep," they all agreed, "those breastfeeding problems are often correlated with major life events-especially holidays!" It was such a recognizable phenomenon, we began to joke about the types of calls we could expect and emotionally prepare for the flood of plugged ducts and mastitis calls.

Well, readers, the holiday season is upon us! For most of us, major holidays and other big life events can mean more and less. More errands, visitors, visiting, travel, sugar. Less nutrition, cuddle time with baby, exercise and, most importantly, less sleep. You already know your body doesn't work as well during times of stress-you are more prone to illness and you just don't feel right. It's no different with breastfeeding. Your breasts are part of your body and they don't function as well during times of stress.

real mom story - julie

Julie Church, RD
julie
mom to Carson (17 months)

I am a mother, a wife, a Registered Dietitian and business owner. I thrive on close friendships and staying connected to my loved ones far away.  My husband, son and I intentionally live in close proximity to both of our offices and those that we serve in our respective careers.  I enjoy walking to work, clear blue sky days and gardening all year round.  My greatest reward thus far has been sharing Carson with others and seeing how loved ones and strangers react to him-to his cuteness, to his hair color, to his smile, to his words, and to his affection.  I cannot wait to see what his impact will be in this world and on others.

When breastfeeding Carson, I enjoy the closeness and physical connection it gives us.  I enjoy the way that it relaxes me and has me rest my busy body.  I think the hormones released while breastfeeding also help stop my busy mind as well.  It truly is a retreat for me in my day that I look forward to.

As a dietitian, I am fully supportive of the concept that women and moms can, and should, enjoy eating.  So, the fact that milkmakers is a cookie simply shows women that tasty food, that has sugars and fats, can be nutritious and used in the body for good purpose.  I love milkmakers for myself and love sharing them with others since they fit so well into my philosophy as a professional and my own philosophy personally as an eater.
