Uncovering Undercover Mama, the Versatile Nursing Shirt

This month milkmakers shares another mom-founded company designed to meet your needs.

Undercover Mama was born out of many months of testing and researching. Founders Elisa and Elena aimed to design a product which makes moms more comfortable nursing, and that they did! The "undercover" allows nursing moms to transform any shirt into a nursing shirt. It works by simply attaching the undercover piece to a bra. Over the undercover moms can wear any shirt they like, allowing for style, convenience, and coverage all in one shirt!

Common Breastfeeding Myths

reneebebee

Renee Bebee, M.Ed., IBCLC

These are things that I see or read every day: from my clients, from professionals and websites focusing on newborn issues.  I know that one post cannot squash these myths completely, but if this helps just a few moms obtain correct information, I'll be very happy!  But for now, read these and remember they are MYTHS!

  • Breastfeeding is painful for the first few weeks.
  • Engorgement is normal and is a sign that everything is going well.
  • There is not enough milk during the first few days after the birth, so most babies need some formula until the milk "comes in."
  • Many women do not produce enough milk.
  • A baby should be on the breast for a certain amount of time.
  • A mother should wash her nipples with soap before feeding the baby.
  • Pumping is a good way of knowing how much milk you have.
  • If a mother is planning to breastfeed, she should buy a pump.
  • Infant formulas are almost the same as breast milk.
  • Doctors know a lot about breastfeeding.
  • Some babies are lactose intolerant.
  • Nipples need to "toughen up" in order to breastfeed.
  • If you give a baby a bottle, he will not like the breast any more.
  • If you breastfeed, you will sleep less than if you bottle feed.
  • You can't eat your favorite foods if you breastfeed.
  • Breastfeeding makes your breasts sag.
  • If you have twins or more, you will definitely need to use formula.
  • Your baby will sleep longer at night if you give her a bottle of formula.
  • If your baby doesn't breastfeed in the first week, he probably never will.
  • If your breasts are too (fill in the blank), your baby will not be able to breastfeed.
  • If your nipples are too (fill in the blank) your baby will not be able to breastfeed.
  • You must use some type of nipple ointment in order to keep your nipples healthy.
  • If your breasts feel softer after a few months, that means that your milk supply has decreased.

Have you encountered any myths about breastfeeding?  What did you hear that you later learned was not true?  We would love to hear from you!

Real Mom Story

erinyorker

Erin, mom to Riley, age 3 1/2 and Sophie, age 7 1/2 months

Name:

Erin

Profession:

Licensed Mental Health Counselor, providing services through the Healthy Start program for 9 years

Child/children's names & ages:

Riley Yorker, age 3 1/2 and Sophie Yorker, age 7 1/2 months

What your babies have taught you:

That the rest of the world has to wait! Sometimes so many things feel like MUSTS, but when your baby needs you to hold her all of the time, you quickly learn that almost everything can just wait.

Your favorite children's music or books:

Goodnight Moon was a first favorite for us, and we are currently really loving the Skippy Jon Jones books and listen to a lot of Raffi, Yo Gabba Gabba cd, and The Little Mermaid soundtrack.

What advice/wisdom can you share with other new moms:

You should never have an expectation that you can do it all by yourself. Ask for help from others, take some breaks for yourself, sleep when you can, and let the housework go as much as possible. Just aim to get the absolute necessities done and enjoy your time with baby. The chores will wait.

What do you enjoy most about breastfeeding:

The sleepy relaxation that comes over both of us, being able to get a good night's sleep even while nursing, and the reassuring sound and feeling of my baby's breathing as she lies across me at night to nurse.

Do you have a pumping tip?

A great hands free pumping bra, such as the one from Simple Wishes makes life A LOT easier!! Combine it with a nursing cover and there is no need for worry, ever. You can pump anytime, anywhere with these 2 items.

What is the best thing about being a mom:

I get to experience the excitement and joy of things through their eyes. Nothing is sweeter than the sound of your child saying, "Mom, I love you."

When you have a chance to "treat" yourself to something, what is it:

A little bit of quiet time to read, Facebook, or do some couponing in peace!

What are your thoughts on milkmakers and how have you used them:

I love the concept of milkmakers cookies and am still hoping to try them soon! I heard of them through the Simple Wishes FB page.

We would love to hear from you!
