hello from milkmakers delicious cookies that boost milk supply and replenish key nutrients moms need.
Wow! The summer is flying by and we've been very busy at milkmakers. I just returned from my first ILCA conference in San Diego last week.
ILCA is the International Lactation Consultant Association. Their annual conference offers lactation consultants and other professionals information about the latest practices and research so they can provide optimal breastfeeding care and support to mothers and babies. I am so excited that milkmakers participated in the exhibit hall this year! The ILCA conference was an opportunity to have conversations face-to-face with many lactation consultants about the real issues that breastfeeding mothers face today. I had many interesting discussions and learned so much! I was encouraged to hear, time and time again, from lactation consultants who were so enthusiastic about milkmakers! They were supportive and loved that milkmakers not only help with milk supply and give moms a nutrition boost, but also help moms feel decadent and pampered - a key part of the emotional support moms need during their breastfeeding journey. That fits the goals of milkmakers perfectly. It was also so wonderful to meet so many lactation consultants and see firsthand just how many are available to help breastfeeding mothers everywhere. Please don't be shy about finding one, even to reassure you that you're doing great! In this month's newsletter we've included an article about choosing a lactation consultant that will give you some great tips on connecting with the best one for you. We are also very pleased to introduce to you another mom-created product called Bamboobies. Enter our giveaway on Facebook to win their high-quality nursing pads! To everyone who stopped by at the conference, thank you! | | Me in front of the milkmakers booth at the 2011 ILCA conference. |

A Look at Mom-Founded Company Bamboobies: One Mother's Solution to Leaks and Lines
An Interview with Kerry Gilmartin, Bamboobies Creator and Founder
 | | Kerry Gilmartin shares a few Bamboobies products at the 2011 ILCA Conference |
What makes Bamboobies unique from other products on the market?
Bamboobies are the best breast pads in terms of design and cost. Bamboobies come in two different sizes: Regulars and Overnights. The Bamboobies Regulars are heart-shaped which contours to the breast. The Bamboobies Overnights have are larger for complete coverage. Products on the market are either made with wrinkly and crinkly bleached paper or cotton which doesn't stop all leaks and feels cold when wet, Bamboobies are made with super-soft and super absorbent eco-fabrics . In comparison to disposables, bamboobies are washable and reusable. Bamboobies is a one time purchase which includes one pair of overnight pads, three pairs of regular pads and laundry bag.
Why do nursing mothers love Bamboobies?
Nursing mothers love Bamboobies because they are simply the softest nursing pads on the market. The heart-shaped cup without wrinkling with creates fewer lines and makes the pad less visible. The Bamboobies are super-soft certified organic, the bamboo and cotton velour help sooth chafed nipples. The ultra absorbent hemp core disperses and locks in milk and the milk-proof outer layer prevents leakage.
How did you come up with the idea for your product?
Bamboobies were born out of necessity - 'the mother of invention!'
After breastfeeding for a few months, I was still leaking sometimes... I even leaked through the thick washable cotton pads. I was tired of looking like I had round targets on my chest where the pads showed through my shirt. Disposables also showed wrinkles and just created too much trash. And disposables get very expensive!
So one day I decided, just because it was handy, to stuff a washable diaper wipe into my bra - it felt great, but it looked funny and was far from perfect. It was made of organic bamboo velour so it was deliciously soft and wicked and absorbed like a great pad should. I'd never felt anything so soft!
A year into product development and prototyping with different fabrics and designs, we have settled on a couple of unique breast pad designs that mothers love.

Choosing a Lactation Consultant
Lactation consultants are specialists in the art and science of breastfeeding. If you're having trouble breastfeeding, or if you just want to avoid trouble down the road, hiring a lactation consultant can be very helpful. But how do you know if a particular lactation consultant has the experience and skills to help you? You can start by asking your physician or midwife for a referral. Friends and neighbors are great referral sources as well. Make sure the lactation consultant is actually a lactation consultant! She should have the letters, IBCLC after her name. Finally, when choosing a lactation consultant, ask about her experience and approach. Listen carefully when you talk to her about your particular concern. Be wary of "guarantees" and words like "never" or "always."
Many of my clients come to me after a bad experience with another lactation consultant. I have compiled a list of statements that clients have heard over and over again. These are red flags! If a lactation consultant (or anyone else for that matter) says any of the following, run the other direction!
- Your baby will never breastfeed.
- Your baby is too old to learn to breastfeed.
- You've missed your "window of opportunity" to breastfeed.
- You can exclusively breastfeed, no matter what.
- Your breasts/nipples are too__________ to breastfeed.
- If you eat ________ it will make your baby sick.
- Your milk may not be good enough for your baby.
- Your baby is allergic to your milk.
- You're not successful breastfeeding because you're not trying hard enough.
- Your baby doesn't like/want your breast.
- If you take this herb/medication I promise you'll make more milk.
- If you've had any breast surgery, you will not make enough milk for your baby.
- It's normal to have nipple pain.
- Your nipples need to toughen up.
- Babies always have to eat on both sides each feeding.
- Babies should always have just one breast per feeding.
- Your baby should stay on the breast for _____ minutes.
- Your baby is a lazy nurser.
- Finger feeding is better than bottle feeding.
- Your baby won't want to breastfeed if you give her a bottle.
There are many highly skilled, compassionate lactation consultants who provide their clients with excellent care. Be discerning and you will find the right person to help you along your breastfeeding journey!

Real Mom Story | |
Carolyn, mom to Jordan (2 and ½ years) & Lauren (1 months)
|
I work part-time from home as a recruiter for the largest internet search engine. This has been fulfilling on multiple levels for me. I love having that adult/workplace interaction and challenges required of me in my role. However, since it is part-time, it is not as demanding and allows me to be the primary caregiver for my children. I feel lucky that I get to participate in the fun activities, pickups/drop offs from school, etc., while still allowing me to have my own career. Parenting is the biggest commitment I have taken on, and one that will satisfy me for a lifetime. It is definitely hard work, but seeing my kids happy, healthy and developing into their own person is amazing. I can't think of anything else that I would rather be doing! I can relate to the challenges any new mom may experience with breastfeeding. The biggest challenge for me is scheduling my day around nursing, knowing I have to be "on" every 2-3 hours. I enjoy the quiet and intimate 1:1 time I get with my baby while breastfeeding. Knowing that this breastfeeding phase is relatively short and will not last forever makes me appreciate it even more. I received milkmakers as a gift right after Lauren was born and I think they are the perfect gift. I have been eating them from the beginning and am not having any milk supply issues. I love that milkmakers taste fantastic and are actually good for you! What a great concept! q+a My babies have taught me Love, patience and joy to a degree I never knew existed. My favorite children's music The Putuymayo Kids collection of CDs - they focus on international children's songs from all over the world and are very soothing. I wish someone would have told me before having kids that There are never any breaks! Wisdom I can share Live in the moment. The biggest challenge I face Balancing time for me, my spouse, and my kids (and all of my other relationships/commitments). The best thing about being a mom Is the satisfying feeling that keeps growing and continues to be rewarding with each passing day. I "treat" myself by Having quiet time to myself - it can be something simple like taking an extra long shower, or going to run errands without being rushed or a splurge like a mani/pedi. | We would love to hear from you! |
