Welcome to milkmakers
delicious cookies that support an abundant supply of breastmilk

Wow, it has been a busy couple of months!

If you follow us on Facebook or our blog you already know that milkmakers won a coveted Seattle Magazine Best of 2010 Award for "Most Enterprising Mom-Preneur Product".  We were, and still are, both honored and humbled to have been selected.  Along with the award came tickets to THE PARTY OF THE DECADE on November 17 (see the photos).  We turned that into an opportunity for milkmakers customers and supporters to share stories with us and enter to win two tickets to attend the party with us.  A big congratulations to the winner Madeline!  We had a great time and you can read her story here.

You may have noticed that here at milkmakers we LOVE all kinds of stories!  Why do we LOVE them so much?  Because every mom has a breastfeeding story and it is worth telling.   It is through telling these stories that we can all encourage a culture that supports and celebrates breastfeeding mothers.  Our hope is that all moms have the opportunity to be successful with their breastfeeding goals, whatever those goals may be.

milkmakers also supports this mission of cultural change through our backing of Best for Babes Foundation.  Please read more about this wonderful organization in the article below.

Will you help with this mission?  I know you've got a story to tell and I want to hear it. Email me, call me, or visit our online community at milkmakers.com and share your story and help other breastfeeding mothers.

When Should I Call a Lactation Consultant?
milkmakerslogograyscale
Renee Beebe, IBCLC

Breastfeeding should be pleasant for you and your baby!  If either one of you is not having a good time, something is not right.  As a new mom, you have instincts to guide you.  Your baby has instincts and very strong reflexes to guide him.  But neither one of you has ever done this before and, most likely, you have never seen a baby breastfeed.  It's likely you will need some help.

Contact a lactation consultant immediately if you experience:
  • Any nipple pain in the first 24 hours after birth. Breastfeeding is not supposed to hurt-ever!  Pain is your body's way of telling you something is not right.
  •  Sore nipples that are not feeling and looking better each day.
  • Redness, pain or severe swelling in the breast.
  • Twins or more.

Or if your baby experiences:
  • Inadequate weight gain or inadequate wet/dirty diapers at any time.
  • Weight loss after day
  • Trouble latching on to the breast or seems to latch on but "falls off" after a short time.
  • Long feeds after day 3 (over 45 minutes of continuous nursing) or feeding very frequently (every hour or less).
  • Fussiness or inability to settle after feedings.
  • Very short feedings (less than 5 minutes) or no interest in feeding at least every 3 hours.
You may consider meeting with a lactation consultant before the birth of your baby if you had trouble breastfeeding a previous child.  A visit with a skilled LC can put things in perspective for you and help you avoid problems with the new baby.  Prenatal consultations are also helpful if you have any concerns regarding your health, you're expecting multiples or you've had any surgery on your breasts or chest.

A lactation consultant can be invaluable when you're preparing to return to the work force.  She can guide you in maintaining a milk supply, pumping at work, helping baby learn to drink from a bottle or cup and assuring that you get enough sleep!

Are you returning to work soon?  Wondering how to pump enough milk for your baby, get all your work done AND get a decent amount of sleep?  You don't have to live in Seattle to receive expert guidance from our resident lactation consultant.  Renee Beebe, M.Ed., IBCLC, is available for phone consultations for moms anywhere. You may reach her at www.second9months.com.  Send her an email and she'll call you the same day to set up a "meeting."  She will help you develop a customized plan for meeting your baby's needs while you're at work or school.

For hands-on help outside of the Seattle area, ask your health care provider for a referral to a reputable lactation consultant.   A directory of lactation consultants can be found at the International Lactation Consultant Association website.  www.ilca.org.

Real Mom:
 Marlena Riggs,

Financial Coordinator & Mom to

Marlena and girls
Marlena with her girls

Hi!  My name is Marlena.  I am a proud mother of two beautiful girls.  I was fortunate enough to have nursed my oldest for 18 months. I went back to work 2 months after I had her. Times got hard and my supply was not always at its best, but I was determined to nurse my daughter for one full year.  I am so glad that I didn't give up.  My daughter has never had an ear infection and rarely gets sick.  I know it is because she was a breastfed baby!

My youngest is 7 months and I am currently breastfeeding her.  I was able to stay home 3 months on maternity leave.  I am really lucky that my mother-in-law takes care of my girls while my husband and I are at work.  My husband and I commute to work and it adds two hours to our day.  I am away from my girls 12 hours a day!  It is so hard to be away for this long.

When I first returned to work I was able to pump 18 - 24 ounces a day for my baby. I pump for my morning break, my lunch, and afternoon break.  I feel like that is all I do is pump, but it is all worth it because I know my baby is getting the best.  At my work place there is a room specifically for nursing moms. It is nice to have a room because I don't ever have to fear that someone is going to walk in on me.

My baby is 7 months now and unfortunately I have seen a significant decrease in my milk supply. I am just so saddened that I cannot produce enough for my baby to eat in one day.  Now, I am lucky if I pump 10 ounces while I am away. Needless to say, this is not enough for my little munchkin.

There are times when I can only pump 2 ounces from each breast in one pumping session and it is just so discouraging. I have tried fenugreek and it helped for a while but I didn't see a huge increase.   I feel like I will be cheating my baby if I can't nurse her up to the full year.  Unfortunately, we have had to supplement with formula but my greatest wish is that I could provide my baby with my milk only.  I really have no choice, my baby has to eat.
I will not give up.

While I was on maternity leave I was watching the Doctor's Show and I saw milkmakers.  I went on milkmakers.com and read the success stories of other mothers, so I decided to order the cookies.  I must say these cookies are tasty!  I have a sweet tooth quite often, so these cookies were perfect.   I did see an increase in my milk supply.  So winning a 3 months supply would be such a blessing! Milkmakers helped me increase my milk supply and they are delicious!!

My babies have taught me:  To enjoy the simple things in life.

My favorite children's book: Love you Forever By Robert Munsch

Advice I can share with other new moms: Enjoy your little babies, they grow up fast!

I enjoy most about breastfeeding: The bonding with mother and child and knowing that I am nourishing my baby with the best.

My pumping tip:  Mothers who return to work make time to build a supply in the freezer.  It is less stressful if you have supply built up when you return to work.

The best thing about being a mom: All the love I have for my children, they are my world!

When I have a chance to "treat" myself is it: A Pedicure and Manicure!
