Dear Friends:

Welcome to the beginning of fall - hopefully you're able to balance your time between working and having fun! Our fall issue includes a spotlight on the recycling efforts of the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh. We also look at an innovative public area recycling container seen on a recent trip to Italy. Finally, we discuss adding food waste composting to your recycling program. Feel free to send in questions or comments and forward this to anyone who may be interested in facility waste reduction and recycling. Thanks for taking a look!

Pittsburgh Convention Center Diverts 50% of Discards

The David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh diverts 50% of its discarded materials through its extensive waste reduction program. Not only do they reuse or recycle beverage containers, paper and cardboard, but they also divert food waste, used cooking oil, light bulbs and carpet from their dumpsters. Their process includes converting from using disposable plates, cups and utensils, to using durable and compostable service-ware, and donating leftover food. According to Debbie Smucker, Director of Marketing for the Convention Center, "The investment has paid for itself by the additional events we have secured because of our progressive efforts."  For more information on their efforts, click here.

I recently returned from Italy where I saw this neat three-sort recycling system they use throughout their extensive train system. This simple idea has three color-coded top rings: paper, beverage containers, and everything else. Clear bags are hung from each ring so you can easily see what goes where. The entire unit sits on a single metal stand. This is a great example of conserving resources often used to make recycle bins, while making recycling convenient to travelers!

We already recycle - should we consider composting?

Many organizations already recycle their paper, bottles & cans, and cardboard. The next big step is to add composting to your program. For most organizations this does not mean piling up food scraps in a heap behind your building. Instead, check if your local garbage hauler or another vendor offers composting collection. They will provide a container to fill with food scraps, coffee grounds, and napkins. The hauler will empty the container and deliver your food scraps to a large composting facility where they turn your banana peels into soil amendment products. Be sure to train your employees! To learn more about setting up composting programs for your facility, click here, or contact Synergis at 914.977.3400.
