Company Spotlight:
Food Manufacturing Giant Sets 75% Waste Reduction Goal

What is your organization's waste reduction goal?

ConAgra Foods, whose products are used in 96% of U.S. households, has  set a new goal to reduce waste going to landfill by 75% in the next five years.

They are also planning to reduce the amount of packaging used in their products, and use more recycled material in their packaging.

"Because our food is part of the lives of millions of consumers each day, ConAgra Foods has a critical responsibility to create positive environmental change," CEO Gary Rodkin said.

This is all part of their new sustainability goals, addressing greenhouse gases, water, solid waste, packaging and their supply chain.

Question Corner:
How can we lower our garbage and recycling costs?

Everyone is looking for ways to reduce overhead expenses, and garbage and recycling costs should certainly not be overlooked.  Does reducing costs mean overflowing containers? Not if it's done correctly.  Several of the more popular strategies include using specialized compaction equipment, reducing the amount of waste generated, recycling more materials, composting organic waste, and training employees to better separate materials for recycling.  Many organizations can save 20% or more by conducting a thorough analysis and making appropriate improvements.

Building Remodeling:
Can old materials be reused or recycled?

Synergis' construction & demolition recycling service saves contractors thousands of dollars every month. One of our current projects in Sunnyvale, CA is aiming for LEED Gold.  Phase One of this project involves coordinating the reuse or recycling of office furniture, partitions, carpet, ceiling tile, sheetrock, flooring, ducts, lighting, doors and wire cable from a 100,000 square foot office space.  Over 90% of the materials will be reused or recycled, including reusable items being donated to local organizations.
