For Your Bulletin: What Is Stewardship? (Part 5 of 5)
Mission Statement

To be co-responsible with Jesus Christ in the building of the kingdom of God and to promote discipleship and spiritual growth through hospitality, prayer, formation, and service.

Stewardship Prayer

As our Lenten journey brings us closer to Easter,

we see with a deeper awareness

our world's desperate need

to experience

the healing power of your justice and peace.

Make us sacraments of your mercy and instruments of

your compassion.

Show us how to be better

 stewards of your people;

through our families, our brothers and sisters with

whom we share your

Eucharist, our neighbors, and the stranger.

Show us how to carry

the cross so that by dying to ourselves, we may give new life to others.

And strengthen our

faith, so that we may

 proclaim your Easter

triumph more confidently, every day, in word and deed.

  Amen

Bulletin Bits Based on Sunday Readings

These bulletin bits are from Sharon Hueckel's book Stewardship by the Bookand are reprinted here with permission.  Whether your parish is preparing to launch a formal stewardship "program," nurturing an earlier stewardship effort, trying to increase awareness of the link between discipleship and stewardship, or just trying desperately to keep the parish financially afloat, dropping Stewardship by the Book into the bulletin each week is one fairly painless way to work at stewardship education.  Click herefor stewardship reflections for the March/April Sunday readings.

Prayers of the Faithful

We recommend that every week in every parish a stewardship intention should be included in the "Prayers of the Faithful."  Click here for March/April

Do You Have a Stewardship Plan?

It is rare that we can accomplish something really special or great without a plan.  No parish would even think of building a new church without a plan.  Yet, we somehow think we can build a vibrant, new parish community without much of a plan at all.

If stewardship is going to take root and grow in our parish communities, we need to develop a plan and follow it.  The 12 critical elements of a good and successful stewardship plan are:   Read More

Almsgiving:

An Expression of Gratitude

Adapted from an article by Jim Lamm, Director of Stewardship, St. Louis Catholic Church, Austin, Texas

When we look at the three traditional "disciplines" of Lent, prayer, fasting and almsgiving, we know that almsgiving gets the least attention.  Yet, the Bible places emphasis firmly on almsgiving:  "Prayer and fasting are good, but better than either is almsgiving accompanied by righteousness . . . It is better to give alms than to store up gold; for almsgiving saves one from death and expiates every sin.  Those who regularly give alms shall enjoy a full life" (Tobit 12:8-9).  Read more

Stewardship and the Cross

This article taken from the April 2011 issue of ICSC e-Bulletin

Do you ever think about how you experience the cross of Jesus Christ?  Do you ever think about the power of that cross in your daily life?  Is the cross even relevant to your life?  It is to stewards of the Lord, who recognize the hope Christ brings through the gift of his cross.  They acknowledge that for them, the cross is their only hope.

Being good stewards of our life in Christ is not easy, but to embrace the cross is not only . . . Read More

Part 5 of 5

As we strive to live as faithful and generous stewards, it is important that we understand all of the facets of stewardship. Here are just a few key aspects of stewardship. Stewardship is:

  • Thankfulness Stewardship calls us to be ever grateful for the gifts that God has given.  Not only are we called to be grateful to God, but we also must be grateful to one another.  Just as we thank God everyday, a stewardship parish must also show gratitude, recognition and appreciation to those who have given generously to the support of the parish.
  • Counter-Cultural  Stewardship is counter-cultural.  While society encourages us to continually strive for more and more, stewardship helps us to recognize that we already have more than enough.  In fact, we have enough to share.
  • Discipleship Stewardship is discipleship.  We strive to put God first in all things and to follow where Our Lord might lead.

All fifteen of the aspects of stewardship, identified by the St. Louis Archdiocesan Stewardship Education Council, can be found in archived issues of this e-newsletter on our website at www.CatholicIdaho.org under the Office of Development.  Click on the "Stewardship" button on right side of the page to find the Stewardship Newsletter Archives.
