PRESIDENT'S LETTER

Dear Alums and Friends of the Mount,

We have just completed a great school year! Our recent graduation in June brought together the classes of 2012 and 1962, both of which joined forces to affirm the values of a Marist education at the Mount:

character development, spiritual growth, and academic achievement.

The Class of 1962 celebrated these values with a very large dose of friendship the night before graduation. Rock 'n roll music was provided by '62 alum Peter Mongillo  and Robert Levy. Political intrigue was generated by Anthony Principi, former Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Lastly, rounds of laughter were supplied by  stories of JUG, teacher horrors and student escapades!

The Class of 2012 has forged their own wonderful friendships and achievements. Virtually the entire class will be attending college and over 60% of them will do so on an academic scholarships valued at an estimated $15 million over 4 years!!

Our Annual Golf Outing in June was an extraordinary success. Wygagil Country Club was new course venue and resulted in a sell-out crowd of Alums and Friends of the Mount. The cocktail reception and dinner included student speakers and a silent auction with very competitive, and friendly, winners! Over $94,000 was raised for student scholarships - quite an achievement.

GOLF OUTING AT WYKAGYL A GREAT SHOT!!!

A record number of golfers - 136 - teed off on the picturesque yet challenging Wykagyl Country Club fairways on Tuesday, June 19th for Mount St. Michael Academy's 22nd Annual Golf Outing!

Since the club's inception in 1898,Wykagyl Country Club has been one of the most challenging and handsome golf courses in the country. Due to its rich history and course design, Wykagyl has been the site of many professional and charitable golf championships.

The event was  a  rip-roaring success! Friends and classmates reunited over cocktails and dinner, and shared conversation, laughs and their generosity to our Super Raffle and Silent Auction.

Three current Mount scholarship recipients spoke from the heart about their Mount experience and how much alumni support has helped them.

The Mount is especially grateful to Harry Winston, jeweler to the stars, for their spectacular Silent Auction gift:

a diamond-encrusted art-deco ladies watch.  The bidding for this item was lively and spirited, and the Mount raised $12,500 in scholarship money on the final bid!

We would like to thank our MSM Golf Committee for their continued guidance and support.

We would also like to thank the staff at Wykagyl Country Club for their professionalism and courtesy in helping us to make a great day even better.

DC REUNION A FUN TIME FOR ALUM

Our DC Area Reunion on Thursday June 7, 2012 was held at the historic Ft. Myer Officers' CLub in Ft. Myer, VA, which overlooked the city of Washington DC's skyline.

Captain Paul Rinn '64 told a compelling story that gripped the attendees. US Navy, speaking about his experiences as Commander of the USS Samuel B. Roberts  when the ship struck a mine in the Persian Gulf on April 14, 1988. He spoke about how ordinary men, named Tilley and Jackson, reached extraordinary heights of bravery to save their ship from sinking.

Captain Rinn related that the Marists' key mission- which is to give every student the opportunity to excel- is a lesson he applied to those under his command.

Special thanks go to our alumni Robert Bettini '57, Richard Buckner '57 , Carey Manhertz '82, and Miguel Lambert '96 who hosted the event.

The occasion was such a great way to celebrate a common Mount legacy, and to cheer on the many accomplishments of the Mount today, that we are having another DC Area Reunion on Saturday October 13, 2012. We will be thrilled to have Anthony Principi '62 speak. Anthony was  the Secretary of Veterans Affairs under President George W. Bush from 2000 to 2005. Today Principi is a lobbyist for Pfizer and chairman of QTC Management, a company that works on contracts for the Veterans Affairs Department.

CLASS NOTES

Juan Duran '07 is one of eight Fulbright Scholarship winners this year from Fordham University.  He will be  going to the prestigious Cajal Institute in Madrid to study neurobiology in August.  Duran will attend Cornell University's Weill Cornell Medical College in the Fall of 2013. Says Juan of the Mount:

"The formative years I spent at Mount shaped me into the student I am today.  My Biology class with Mr. Albano, Chemistry with Mr. Joseph and Physics with Mr. Degrandi catalyzed my interest in the sciences that drove me to continue my study in the sciences at Fordham University.

My four years at Fordham as a premedical student and Natural Science major provided me with a strong foundation for my future endeavours-- a foundation that began at Mount.  My major recommendation to Mount students would be to find what motivates you and gets you excited, which may take a lot of searching, but once you find it try to be the best at it".

Pat Farenga '48 was presented with the William "Stax" McCarthy Award recognizing him as the St. Bonaventure University Alumni of the Year! Pat is a 1952 graduate of the University.

Pat not only does great thing for St. Bonaventure, he also is a big help to the alumni office here at the Mount.

A heartfelt and hearty congratulations Pat!
