 PRESIDENT'S LETTER

"If you're running a large company, don't expect the public to like you...it is now, more than ever, incumbent on business leaders to repair relations with customers and employees by stepping up to the ethical plate." So writes the distinguished Harvard Psychologist Howard Gardner in the Harvard Business Review.

I would contend that a MOUNT education does not wait until one is a business leader in undertaking the obligation to help students "step up to the ethical plate." We prepare them for ethical choices right from the opening bell!

Indeed, the great educational tradition of the Marist Brothers has been to respond to the social and ethical development of our students. Hence, our Religious Education curriculum, Community Service Program, and Retreat Programs have as a central theme helping students to grow in their ethical competency.

Indeed, I trust that every student graduates with a "moral compass" which ensures their successful negotiation of the many cultural challenges which await them in life outside of the MOUNT. It is the stress upon thoughtful and critical reflection which enables our students to proceed to a successful collegiate experience. And the college returns are rolling in!! We fully expect, as in past years, that 100% of our students will be matriculating in the fall.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!

Joe Chadwick '12 is the Mount's head  cameraman

Did you ever wonder who gets those close up shots of the Mount basketball team making a game winning basket with 2 seconds left in the game? Of Mount track athletes running the 400 m relay? These videos and others are on MSG's interactive channel 614, and go to the website MSGVarsity.com, where everyone in the five Boroughs can see recent coverage of games, events and other high school happenings.

Joseph M. Chadwick '12 is the Mount's main cameraman, and is ALWAYS on the move! Says Joseph, " I do all of the filming for most of the Mount sporting events such as baseball, football, basketball, lacrosse, some track.

I am busy all the time. The teams have me running around with them all the time!"

Joe films pieces, edits them and then sends them to MSG for channel 614 and uploads them to  MSG Varsity.com.

Joseph also films special projects for the Mount, which enables him to be really creative. He has done short videos of the Mount Basketball team playing for the City Championship, a No Smoking campaign for ADAPP, skit videos and other special projects. Joe has been filming since his Junior year in 2010, when MSG visited the Mount and had students write an essay on why they wanted to do filming.

MOUNT STUDENTS WORK FOR HABITAT FOR HUMANITY ON SERVICE TRIP

For the second year in a row, Mount St. Michael Academy students spent their Winter Break in Newburgh, NY working for a Habitat for Humanity project.

They carried, sawed, hammered, nailed and painted during the week.

Newburgh is located in Orange County, New York, about 60 miles north of New York City.  The houses are being prepared for low income families who buy them at cost.

During the week, students stayed at the Marist Retreat House in Esopus, NY.

MOUNT SCIENCE TEACHER CARMINE LUONGO AND STUDENTS EXPERIMENT WITH THE FUTURE

Seventh graders Armando Bunjaj,  Carlos Defreitas and Sean Fairclough explored how fast the brain works to distinguish words and colors

Is bottled water cleaner than tap water? How does a solar-powered battery actually work? How quickly can the brain process words? Why is the sun hot? These and other burning questions were answered by our young scientists at the Mount's annual Middle School Science Fair.

Teacher Carmine Luongo organized the event, which took place on February 17th, with more than 60 seventh and eighth graders participating. Carmine has taught science at the Mount for the last 14 years, and is still as enthusiastic about developing in young minds a curiosity for scientific experimentation as he was when he first started. Carmine graduated from SUNY Cortland with a major in Phys. Ed, and is now getting his Master's Degree in Sport Pedagogy at Manhattan College.

Carmine Luongo

Carmine is one of the key faculty who will be involved in the Mount's new Sports Medicine Academy, to be launched for Grades 9 and 10 in September of 2012. Says Carmine, "Some of the students I have now are interested in entering the new Sports Medicine program. It is a groundbreaking program that will highly distinguish us from other schools that do not have it. We will be setting an academic precedent. This is typical of our motto, ad astra per aspera."

Carmine's students are as strongly curious about science and just as enthusiastic as he is. Says Carmine, "Having an engaging and fun science curriculum now encourages students to become even more interested in science at the high school level." For the most part, Carmine says that kids understand that science is an integral, practical part of their lives.

Top honors for the Science Fair went to the following students:

Seventh Grade

First Place: Russell Randall: "Are You Wnroderdnig Why You Can Raed Tihs?" which tested how we can read words as the brain recognizes the first and last letter of each word.

Second Place: Devon Willis

Third Place: Jalen Martinez and John Rodriquez

Eighth Grade

First Place: Angelo Baez: Experiment on Friction

Second Place: Gianni Aviles, Pierre Wayman, Norman Parkinsen

Third Place: Kai Clarillo

 MOUNT BASKETBALL TEAM

HAS STRONG SEASON

The Mount Varsity Basketball season ended with a Class AA semi final loss to Holy Cross High School  55 - 40 at St. John's University. The game was close

throughout with Mount leading by a single point at half time, but the Holy Cross Crusaders played a stifling defense in the second half and pulled out a hard fought and well earned victory.

We at the Mount are very proud of our boys who competed in the Class AA Division for the first time since 1990 and excelled. The team posted an impressive 21-8 record. Making it to the Class AA semi final round for the first time since 1975. The skilled play and  leadership of senior starters, Malik Gill, Omari Manhertz, Anthony Maestre and Edward Correra will be missed, but as always an enthusiastic athletic group of underclassman will carry the mantel of excellent play and good sportsmanship again next year.

Senior point guard standout Malik Gill earned CHSAA All City First Team honors and will play for Dartmouth College next year. Congratulations to Coach Tom Fraher and Coach Tom McKenna for guiding the Mountaineers to another successful season!

TRACK TEAM SCORES BIG

The MSM Varsity track team scored big at the CHSAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in February.  The 4 X 200 meter relay team is ranked #1 in the league with a time of 1:30.91 and the 4X400 meter relay team took second place, posting 3:27.47 mark.

Varsity 4 x 400 members are:

Jr. Tavon Nowell

Jr. Dorwin Mitchell

Jr. Jeffrey Jones

Sr. Bruce Parker

Varsity 4 x 200 members are:

Junior     Tavon Nowell

Senior   Bruce Parker

Soph      Kasim Thomas

Frosh     Anton Porter

Junior speedster Dorwin Mitchell is #4 in the CHSAA League in the Varsity 300 meter dash. Congratulation to Coach Gatling and the team!

MOUNT HOCKEY TEAM WINS FOR CHARITY

The Mount Varsity Hockey team competed very well in the Catholic High School Hockey League. Despite small numbers the team's dedication was second to none. The team raised over $200.00 towards Breast Cancer Awareness in a February game played versus St. Raymond's High School.

Though the Mount lost the game Breast Cancer Research came away a winner due to the teams efforts and donation. Well done Boys!

MEET THE MOUNT DIRECTORY:

PAT HARRIS '75

The Mount wants to introduce you to our Directory Members, present and past, in order to let you know how much help we have had through the years in continuing the mission of the Mount.

We start with Patrick Harris '75.

Pat Harris '75 and his daughter Lauren

What was life like for you at the Mount?

My years at the Mount were some of the most important years of my life.  I can look back now and make a clear connection between what I learned and my experiences at the Mount to the person I am today.   The discipline and work ethic that was instilled in all of us prepared me for the next four years of education and rigorous training at the US Military Academy - senior cadets are not as tough as some of the Brothers who taught me!  All kidding aside, the Mount set me up for success. I am grateful that my parents were able to send me and that I had the foresight to value that education at that moment in time.

Can you boil down a lesson from the Marists at the Mount for your professional and personal life?

You will never find a group that is more committed to educating young adults than the faculty at the Mount.  There has always been a clear passion that runs through the teachers there and that made my success possible.   Through the Marist Brothers and the rest of the faculty, I learned that I was responsible for my success, and while they would always be there to help and support me, I was responsible for where the tools they provided me would take me.

The sky was always the limit. I remind myself of that every day and worked to instill that same kind of drive into my kids. You don't realize the impact these teachers have on your life until later when you can hear them in the back of your mind when you take on a new challenge or are trying to teach someone else.

Why is your Directory service important?

Being a part of the Directory allows me to give back, to be a part of "today's" Mount , and to help mirror the core values of "yesterday's" Mount for the current and future students of the Mount.

BIG RED: BROTHER LEO SYLVIUS

Contributed by Pat Farmer '52

Brother Leo Sylvius FMS was the first Marist Brother I met when I went to register as a boarder in the fifth grade at Mount St. Michael Academy. With red hair and built a little on the stocky side, he was an imposing figure in his cassock and collar.

I felt a little overawed in his presence and was quite relieved when he accepted me as a student. I think he intentionally cultivated a somewhat intimating attitude when he was playing the role of Brother Principal.

He appeared to enjoy handing out report cards personally as we waited nervously to find out if we passed or failed. He was very involved in school activities.

I remember him cheering on the basketball team while chatting with Coach Howie Smith in the "Old Gym." He took a special hand in the construction of the "New Gym". On occasion, he took charge of the daily detention crew of which I would be an occasional member. He would hand us a shovel, march us to some vacant spot on the school campus and tell us that we were digging the foundation to the new gym.  Keep Reading

MOUNT GOLF OUTING IS ON THE MOVE...

Wykagyl Country Club: Site of the Mount's June 19th, 2012 Golf Outing

The Mount Saint Michael Golf Committee is happy to announce that after a successful five-year run at Leewood Golf Club, the Annual Golf Outing will experience a change of venue: We are bringing our golf event to the Wykagyl Country Club in New Rochelle, NY.

Since the club's inception in 1898,Wykagyl Country Club is one of the most challenging and handsome golf courses in the country. Due to its rich history and course design, Wykagyl has been the site of many professional and charitable golf championships.

The Wykagyl website states, "As one of the truly classic golf courses in our country, Wykagyl presents a memorable experience to any member or guest who has graced its fairways."  After touring the facility and the course the MSM Golf Committee agreed Wykagyl would give our loyal golf outing participants a fresh and challenging venue for our event.

We hope that you can join us for a fun day of golf, or for our cocktail reception and auction, on Tuesday, June 19th 2012 at The Wykagyl Country

Club  and help support the Mount Saint Michael Academy Student Scholarship Fund, that affords deserving students and their families a Catholic faith based education in the tradition of the Marist Brothers. We at the Mount would like to thank club general manager Mario De Preta and his loyal staff at Leewood Golf Club for their years of fine service on behalf of our outing and the MSM Scholarship Fund.

BIG REDBIGRED

I
found out years later that he enjoyed an excellent reputation as a gifted educator and administrator. He demonstrated these qualities while he was Principal at the Mount and then he proved his ability again when he founded and became the first Principal of Marist High School, a Coed Academy, located in Bayonne, NJ.

With his ability he would have been a success in just about any endeavor yet he made a decision to take vows and become a Marist Brother. He then dedicated his life to God and to the Marist Order. To me he epitomized a Marist Brother.

In 1968, I heard he was not well and wrote him a letter while he was recuperating at Christopher Columbus High School in Miami. I still have a copy of his reply. In part he wrote:

"Yes Pat, I do have very fond recollections of the Mount, of your registration as a resident student, of your practically living at the Mount. (I lived two blocks away). In the final paragraph he wrote, "Do continue to pray for Big Red or the Prince as so many of our dear Mount men and Alumni used to call me. Let us hear from you again. On my part I will continue to keep a prayerful remembrance of you and your wonderful family. When I do get more time I promise to write again at greater length. God love you and keep you always. Ever in J. M. J.

PRESIDENTPRESIDENT

Students and teams have been very busy this winter season. All of them are moving into the final rounds of their respective playoffs. The warm climate of this winter even has the baseball and lacrosse teams out running through drills!

On the academic front, we recently hosted the Annual Academic Olympics at the Mount for elementary students in the Bronx and Manhattan. This is the 33rd Olympics and the Mount has run the majority of the contests. We also hosted our annual Middle School Science Fair, which was organized and run by Carmine Luongo. Over 60 students presented their experiments to teachers, fellow students and parents.

Let me finish by returning to where I started. I am often struck with the awareness of our alums of their moral strength and character. They themselves are the first to volunteer how the MOUNT experience has distinctly shaped them as adults. It is both with great pride and genuine fondness that they offer these reflections. Some of the men include very moving and stirring notes with their contribution to the Annual Fund. It is so clear: the MOUNT is where so many good starts took shape, and our grads are very grateful, and show it!

Sincerely,

Dr. Anthony Miserandino

LIGHTSLIGHTS

Joe was selected to be a video journalist for MSG since they can't be everywhere. MSG gives participating videographers $1500 at the end of the year for books and supplies.

Joseph grew up in Allerton, and now resides with his family in Webster. Says Joe, "I wasn't sure what I wanted to do by the time I was a junior in high school. Then I started filming and liked it alot. My mom and dad think it's great and they are both very supportive. Joe is the youngest of four boys. One of his older brothers graduated from the Mount in '06.

What were his biggest projects so far? "My first big film project was the Turkey Bowl in 2010! The second major project was filming my dad's wedding last year. "

Joe already has a successor: Joel Valentin, a junior, just started filming events under Joe's mentorship in February of 2012.

Of course, Joe wants to study filmmaking in college. He already has received a scholarship for $10,000 from Long Island University, but is waiting until he hears from all of the schools he applied to to make his decision.

Thanks to all of you who continue to read the newsletter! Our goal is to reach an ever wider audience of alumni and friends in order to strengthen the Mount's presence.

Please let us know what you are up to, and especially if you have changed contact information like address, telephone and/or email.

Kind regards

Julie Androshick
