 PRESIDENT'S LETTER

Dear Alumni and Friends of the Mount,

2012 challenges us to absorb a variety of issues: results of mid-term exams, new course beginnings, a new semester, bills from the Christmas holiday, families in transitions, national politics of historic proportions, and international upheaval.

As the Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen noted, "A community is like a ship. Everyone ought to be prepared to take the helm."   We live in a nation and a world community that requires each of us to be leaders in our own slice of the universe. In addition, the daily news reminds us that we are a nation linked, as never before, to the international community.

Taking a pro-active leadership stance we remind our students of this link during our regular morning prayers. We remind each other that we are linked to international education through the work of the Marist Brothers. Given the great diversity of our school community, the impact of our global world connection is felt every day among many of our students and faculty.

Our students are working hard to understand and prepare themselves for these many challenges. I am very confident of their abilities, and look forward to the day they have the opportunity to lead and make significant contributions locally, nationally and globally.

MOUNT'S NIGHT OF THE ARTS GETS RAVE REVIEWS!

Student of Ms. Gina Negrin reads an original poem
On Thursday December 21st, 2011, the Mount's Literary Art Classes, our School Choir and Drum Circle presented A Night of the Arts at 7:30 PM in the Library to a full house of over 100 parents, students teachers and alumni.

The remarkable talent on store started off with selections of African Drumming from the Drum Circle, led by Mr. Michael Duffy. The school choir was joined by the Girls' Choir from Preston High School in singing inspirational Gospel songs of Christmas.
Art from students of Mr. Thomas Furano is admired

Over 30 students from Ms. Gina Negrin's Literary Arts classes read essays and poetry, evoking powerful images through prose pieces which offered the audience their perceptions of family, friends, life in the Bronx and at the Mount.

In addition, art students from Mr. Thomas Furano's art classes exhibited their best works throughout the Library.

We look forward to the next night in celebration of student creativity!

A SONG IS IN THE AIR AT THE MOUNT!

George Janvier leads the new Mount choir in a gospel hymn

Mount St. Michael Academy has a new choir which is being led by Bronx native George Janvier, choir director at Our Lady of Grace Church on 225th Street in the Bronx.  The Mount Choir started practicing in November of 2011 and gave its first full performance on December 21st at the Mount Night of the Arts. Says George, " The boys worked really hard and I am very proud of them."

The Mount Choir will be singing mostly gospel pieces but Janvier has a lot of other influences planned, especially for masses. For example, the choir already has a bit of a background in Latin, and will  also delve into other music like contemporary Christian music and even put a twist on some traditonal Catholic hymns.

George sees the choir growing in number as more and more student like what they see and hear and find themselves compelled to join the ranks. He says, "The choir can perform optimally from as little as 5 members to as much as 50 as long as the boys give it there all and enjoy what they are doing. My optimal dream is to have the whole student body singing along with choir at their prayer services, because as St. Augustine said, when you sing, you pray twice." Keep Reading

What Is The 2011-2012 Annual Fund Appeal?ANNUAL

Our Annual Fund helps to bridge the gap between tuition and operating  expenses.  Annual giving is the financial lifeline of any school.  Simply put, the annual fund is the best way possible for alumni, parents of alumni, faculty, staff and friends to help make a difference in the future of Mount St. Michael Academy. Your investment, on an annual basis, will help raise needed funds for programs, activities and other expenses that the school incurs.

Regardless of its size, your gift to the Annual Fund enables the Mount to:

  • Offer need-based financial-aid
  • Maintain its own school buses
  • Provide state-of-the-art technology in our classrooms
  • Maintain and improve classroom and student facilities
  • Hear specifically how the Annual Fund is used to help Mount students!

Bro. Steve Schlitte, Principal

Bro. Steve Schlitte: The Annual Fund has allowed us to expand our reach into new elective courses and to integrate technology into our instructional practices. For example, we are developing a Sports Medicine Program and have outfitted virtually all our classrooms with "smartboard" technology.

Our new AP European History class makes use of a wide range of scholarships not otherwise available. Teachers are empowered to help students in school and at home - a great way to enhance student achievement school wide.

Gus Berger '12

Gus Berger '12:  I am a senior at the Mount. My family has struggled with the economy and with tuition. This year we received financial aid from the Mount.

It has made a big difference for my family and me. I can study and not worry so much. I can concentrate on applying to college and my future.

I am grateful to the generosity of the alumni. I will not forget this help. I look forward to helping a student in the future after I get a job.

PRESIDENT'S LETTERPresident

I see our leaders in the making on a daily basis as I witness the gradual evolution of our students' character and strength. I watch them rising to new challenges in the classroom, increasing their technological and scientific savvy, and reaching new levels of achievement on the athletic field.

It is in this environment of distinction that we are excited and proud to open the new Mount St. Michael Sports Medicine Academy in September of 2012 with advanced curriculum and intersnhips for participating freshmen and sophomore students.  The program's chief advisor is Dr. Anthony Maddalo, an orthopedic surgeon in Yonkers, NY and team doctor for the New York Rangers and head team doctor for Manhattan College in Riverdale, NY.

Led by Manhattan College will partner with the Mount: the school's teachers, professional athletic trainers and state of the art facilities will be part of the program.

Building upon this platform of distinction, We are also very proud to introduce to you the Legends of the Mount cohort for 2012. Their lives span many years of Mount history and the great legacy of caring and commitment so essential for this designation. Please make it a point to support this event, participate in the dinner celebration, and cheer on the great tradition we have of doing great work with great students - year in and year out since 1926!!

The Mount is thriving, and with your continued support and encouragement we will continue our great tradition for many years to come. Henrik Ibsen would be proud of us....to say nothing of St. Marcellin Champagnat.

CHOIR CHOIR

Growing up,  George was an altar boy but only sang sporadically. He did not start singing seriously until he was about 14 years old, which is when he joined both the youth choir in his church and in his high school. George started directing choir a couple of years ago our Lady of Grace when the youth choir director had to move on.

Asked why students should join the Mount choir, George says, "Singing is just downright fun. The feeling you get singing songs you love is almost indescribable. It is the kind of feeling that once you experience it you are hooked."

Says  student Jonathan Rivera '12:  "I like choir because it gives me something to do besides playing lacrosse. It is great to sing for people and know that they enjoy it. I am happy when other people get a kick out of our singing."

SPORTS MEDICINESPORTSMED

An emphasis will be made on the training internships as students will experience how to work in a professional training setting whirlpools, treatment tables, taping stations, therapeutic modalities (ultrasound, laser treatments) and various fitness equipment.

The idea of introducing students to Sports Medicine at the freshman level a first for high schools in not only New York City's five boroughs but in the tri-state area. Says Bro Steve Schlitte, F.M.S., " We want to target kids with both an interest in science and in sports with a rigorous science curriculum. There are so many Mount grads in the medical field, that we feel that putting the program together will help our students get into top notch pre-professional programs."

The Mount's Sports Medicine Academy will lead students to opportunities in variety of careers and clinical settings: athletic training and physical therapy in both amateur and professional sports; military training; surgery; biomedical engineering and pharmaceuticals. For those whose dream it is to go into medicine, this is a critical first step in achieving that goal.

Industry figures cite that careers that require a concentration in sports medicine are growing strongly. The New York Times (April 2011) cites Biomedical Engineering and Athletic Training among the top ten fastest-growing professions due to demand for their skill sets.

The curriculum is as follows

Grade 9:

  • Honors Biology
  • Participation in Medical Careers Program (Already existing)
  • 20 hours of (summer)  volunteer work in a doctor's office, rehap center or therapy office

Grade 10

  • Honors Chemistry
  • Participation in Medical Careers Program (Already existing)
  • 20 hours of volunteer work with trainer at Mount games

Thanks to all of you who continue to read the newsletter! Our goal is to reach an ever wider audience of alumni and friends in order to strengthen the Mount's presence.

Please let us know what you are up to, and especially if you have changed contact information like address, telephone and/or email.
