Tucked away in the heart of Downtown Scottsdale is one of my new
favorite stores. This quaint shop is aptly named Outrageous Olive Oils and Vinegars
and it carries the largest variety of oils and vinegars that I have ever
found in one spot! While on a foodie hunt to find a specific hot sauce that is sold
downtown, I happened to pass by the store prior to their opening.
Immediately I made a call to my business partner to inform her of my
new and interesting find, "Susie, an olive oil shop is opening
downtown!" I think I actually heard her squealing with glee on the
other end of the phone. A few days later after they opened, we made a beeline from our
offices directly to their front door to welcome our new business
neighbors in Scottsdale. Its owned by John and Rayna Griffin, a couple
from Sedona who decided that opening an olive oil and vinegar store is
every bit as cool as the need for it. Taste on
site! They carry 20 different oils and 12 different vinegars. These finds
are imported from various countries all over the world. All of the
varietals are available to sample and purchase in store.
Amazing olive oil creations range from blood orange to wild mushroom
& sage. Of course if you like to stay with the classic extra virgin
you'll find a hearty variety of those as well. Also on the list are flavor infused balsamic vinegars. From wild
blueberry to pomegranate, the options are seemingly endless. I met an olive oil specialist named Kelsey who took me on a short
tasting through the light and aromatic pleasures of olive oils. One of my favorites was the Tuscan Herb oil; it has a rich and smooth
blend of herb flavors. I look forward to trying it on some meats,
pastas and vegetables. On the balsamic side, my new BFF is the pomegranate infused
balsamic. A nice salad of watermelon, feta and this vinegar are soon to
be consumed by me. I can almost taste the drizzle of this velvety
goodness. Very soon, thanks to Kelsey, there will be recipes available in store
that maximize the flavors and variety of the oils and vinegars that
they carry. In the meantime, we will continue to stop in to taste and purchase
the delicious treats at this new Foodie find!

Olive Oil History Olive culture has ancient roots. Fossilized remains of the olive tree's ancestor were found near Livorno, in Italy, dating back twenty million years, although actual cultivation probably did not occur in that area until the fifth century B.C.
Olives
were first cultivated in the Eastern part of the Mediterranean, in the
region known as the "fertile crescent," and moved westwards over the
millennia.

EVOO BEAUTY
Olive oil soap, also known as Castile soap, has a long history. In
fact, many people believe olive oil soap originated in Spanish Kingdom
of Castile as early as 1567.
Olive oil soap is created by mixing olive oil with lye, then
adding colors and fragrances. Some people also like to add moisturizers
such as glycerin to their homemade olive oil soap. Although it is slower
to lather than other types of soap, olive oil soap is very mild. This
makes it a great choice for people with allergies or sensitive skin.
Simple Olive Oil Soap Recipe
· One 18-ounce can of Lye, Red
Devil is a popular brand · 5 cups of Distilled Water · 20 cups of Olive Oil · 1 heat-proof container for mixing
the lye (at least 2 quart size) · 1 large stainless steel or enamel pot for mixing soap · 1 spatula or spoon (Rubber or silicon) · 1 plastic container with a lid
Pour your distilled water into the heat-proof container, then add
the Lye and stir
carefully with rubber spatula to mix and dissolve. This stuff will
get hot,
so watch out! It will also produce fumes for a few minutes, so it
is best to mix it
up and get away from it quickly until the fumes disperse. Then make
sure to set the
lye-water mixture aside in a safe place to cool off.
Once your lye has cooled to the point where the container is just
warm to the touch,
pour Olive Oil into your large mixing pot and heat on the stove. We
want to heat the
Olive Oil to approx. 100 degrees F, if you have a thermometer you
can measure this
exactly. Otherwise, just heat it up until the outside of the pot
feels very warm to
the touch, then remove the pot from the heat source.
Pour the lye-water mixture into the warm oil, very slowly and
carefully to avoid spills,
stirring the oil all the while with your spatula. The mixture will
incorporate and
become smoother, continue stirring for a couple of minutes to make
sure everything is
well-mixed. Then start using your stick blender or beater, for short
intervals,
hand-stirring in between. You will soon notice the mixture getting
thicker and more
opaque, that means trace is occurring. Keep stirring until you get a
rather thick
pudding-like consistency.
Pour soap mixture into mold, snap on lid, and cover with
blankets. When it is
ready, pop the block out the the mold and cut it into whatever sizes
you like. Stack
your soap on brown paper-lined shelves in a well-ventilated area,
this soap should be aged
and cured for approx. 4 weeks before use. Makes more than 10 pounds
of
soap which makes it a wonderful idea for gifts, especially if you stamp it with interesting personal designs.
