Quoting Electricity

"O tell me, when along the lineFrom my full heart the message flows, What currents are induced in thine? One click from thee will end my woes. Through many an Ohm the Weber flew,
And clicked the answer back to me, I am thy Farad, staunch and true, Charged to a Volt with love for thee."

GEN-TECH POWER CONNECTION

Emergency Power News - April 2012

Greetings!

ABC15 News Report with GEN-TECH Generator connected to the church
ABC15 News Report with GEN-TECH Generator connected to the church

All that remained of the Northminster Presbyterian Church's power junction after a dump truck plowed into it was a tangled mess of metal, brick, and loose power cables. According to the Phoenix Fire Department, a dump truck and an SUV collided at 35th Ave and Sweetwater and ended up in the wall of the church.

The truck took out the electric panel and the AC unit to the church. The main church building wasn't heavily damaged, but the church's food bank operation would have been compromised without power to its refrigerators.

The church hosts a weekly food bank that services more than 140 families each month. As the electrical crews and our technicians from GEN-TECH rushed to figure out the building's electrical systems, temperatures on the cold storage units began to increase.

But our rental generator saved the day by providing necessary electrical power, bringing the temperatures back down in the coolers, and ultimately saving the food.

Until power was fully restored at the church, our generator was on-site powering their lights and cooling units so people who count on that food would be able to receive it.

So, when your power is interrupted, be it from a storm or damage from a dump truck, know that we're available 24/7. We can be reached anytime day or night by calling 623-937-1719.

Sincerely,

Michael Bonville

Question:  What is the difference between kW and kVa?

Answer:  The difference between kW (kilowatt) and kVA (kilovolt-ampere) is the power factor. kW is the unit of real power and kVA is a unit of apparent power (or real power plus re-active power). The power factor, unless it is defined and known, is an approximate value (typically 0.8), and the kVA value will always be higher than the value for kW.

As for commercial and industrial generators, kW is most commonly used when referring to generators in North America, and a few other countries that use 60 Hz, while the majority of the rest of the world typically uses kVa as the primary value when referencing generator sets. Also, rental generators are sized with kVa ratings.

To explain it deeper, the kW rating is the power a generator can supply based on the horsepower of an engine. kW is calculated by the horsepower rating of the engine times .746. For example if you have a 500 horsepower engine it has a kW rating of 373. The kilovolt-amperes (kVa) is the alternator capacity. Generators usually have both ratings on the data plate. To determine the kW and kVa ratio, this formula can be used.  .8 (pf) x 625 (kVa) = 500 kW

You may want to consider coming to one of our training seminars or workshops where we discuss kW vs. kVa, along with Power Factor and how all of this relates directly to today's emergency power generators.  Take a look here for more information on our classes and dates.
