GEN-TECH POWER CONNECTION
Emergency Power News - August 2011
|
Greetings!
With a proverbial ear to the ground, I tend to pick up a few things from time to time. This is one of those times. Just this week, I learned that EcoMotors International and Generac Power Systems, Inc. have announced an agreement to jointly develop the revolutionary EcoMotors opocŪ engine for Generac products. The agreement is designed to enable Generac to apply the opocŪ technology to its market-leading range of residential, commercial and industrial power generation solutions. As fuel prices rise and crude oil on the world market continues to be unstable, breakthrough ideas with clean technology (such as solar, battery, high efficiency engines, lighting, and other environmentally friendly technologies) are emerging. The opposed-piston, opposed-cylinder design of this new engine is intriguing and is apparently very fuel efficient. With the elimination of the cylinder heads and valvetrain plus the fact that it fires on every stroke, this engine has distinct possibilities in the emergency power generation market. Rather than me try to explain all the idiosyncrasies of this unique design, please consider a jaunt over to EcoMotors' website for a more in depth explanation of their technology. As always, thank you for taking the time to look through our newsletter. Remember that GEN-TECH will let neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night keep us from servicing your emergency power generator 24-7-365.
Sincerely,
Michael Bonville GEN-TECH 800-625-8324

Severe Weather? Prepare For the Worst
Six Simple Steps to Prepare Your Home and Family for Severe Weather:
Create a family disaster plan - The Department of Commerce (DOC) recommends that families create a disaster plan that they practice and maintain. The DOC suggests the plan include instructions for evacuations, health emergencies, safety, loss of water, gas, electricity and/or telephone.
Know the difference between watch and warning - A severe weather WATCH means conditions are possible in the specified area usually within 36 hours. A severe weather WARNING means conditions are expected in the specified area within 24 hours.
Inspect home and yard for potential hazards - The Home Safety Council (HSC) advises homeowners to remove outdoor items such as lawn furniture and trash cans as they may become airborne during a severe storm. It also is important to trim or cut down weak trees and branches which are easily broken off by high winds and may damage a home. Severe weather can bring intense rainfall. The HSC recommends homeowners keep rain gutters, outside stairwells, window wells, drain lines and down spouts clean to prevent flooding.
Secure backup power - Flashlights cannot power refrigerators or life-saving medical equipment and candles are dangerous. The only way to ensure access to power when a power outage occurs is to install an automatic standby generator. The American Red Cross suggests that for power outages, permanently installed stationary generators are better suited for providing backup power to the home than portable generators.
Protect your home's openings - The National Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS) lists the protection of openings as one of the most important precautions homeowners can take to improve the chance their home will survive a storm. Openings include all windows, entry doors, sliding glass doors, garage doors and gable end vents.
Check your insurance policy - Most homeowner policies do not cover damage from flooding that may result from a hurricane or severe weather. Ask an insurance agent or emergency management office for information about the National Flood Insurance Program or other flood insurance programs.

ASK GT?
 | | Ask GT a Question! |
Question: What is the difference between a motor and a generator?
Answer: This is a good question, but let me start by explaining that motors and generators are more similar than they are different. Motors and generators are electromagnetic devices. They both have current-carrying loops of wire that produce magnetism and rotate. This is where the similarities end, however. Electric motors and generators are actually the opposite of each other. Electric motors convert electrical energy into mechanical energy, while generators convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. In a motor, current flows through a coil in the presence of a magnetic field which results in rotational motion. In a generator, a magnetic field is rotated in a coil by the prime mover (engine) which causes the production of electricity, or correctly stated "voltage". Here's a question to think about - could a generator act as a motor in certain conditions? The answer is yes, but this gets really technical and is better left to learning in a hands-on environment. You may want to consider coming to one of our training seminars or courses. Take a look here for more information on our classes and dates. Do you have a question for GT?
