Greetings!
DST is fast approaching, but folks in the Grand Canyon State won't have to lose sleep over it! As you probably know, each fall and spring the clocks move either forward or backwards by one hour to observe the daylight savings time in all 50 states, except one; Arizona.
Daylight Savings Time for 2010 started on March 14th this year and it will end on the first Sunday in November, the 7th this year. Starting at 12AM EST on that date clocks will be moved back by one hour. There will be some lost sleep for those in 47 continental states thanks to the time change, but Copper State folks who conduct business outside of Arizona will be dealing with a different kind of time deprivation.
During the winter months, a caveat is if a call is made to the eastern time zones from the Desert State, we have to add 2 hours to our current time. If a call is made to the Pacific time zone, we have to subtract 1 hour. This is important to remember when calling around their opening, lunch and closing times.
So, regardless of whether you're affected by DST or not, GEN-TECH is here to help you with your generator needs and concerns. Thank you for taking the time to peruse our newsletter.
Sincerely,
Michael Bonville GEN-TECH 800-625-8324

Engine Oil Change
Most of us are comfortable doing things the way they've been
done before and we tend to stick to our methods, regardless of whether the
method is logical, but because "we've always done it that way." Take for
example, changing oil.
Many of you while reading this are thinking, "I need to get my
car in for an oil change". And how often
do you change your oil in your car or truck? Whether or not we adhere to a predetermined interval, most of us know
the "every 3,000-5,000 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first"
criteria. I'm sure you've been told that changing our car's oil is the single
most important maintenance procedure you can do to prolong the life of the
engine.
The formula in the Operation and Maintenance Manuals for changing
the oil in your Generator is similar: every x hours of ...read more! |

Ask GT?
 | | Ask GT a question! |
Question: I need a backup generator in case my power goes out at home, but I'm not sure exactly what size to buy. It needs to run a refrigerator, one or two circuits of house lights, our furnace and maybe my electric range. I can afford a portable generator, but not a home backup unit. My budget is around $1000.
Answer: You will need at least a 8kW genset, which is a total of 33 amps maximum output. The refrigerator takes about 15 amps to start, the lights 15 amps with them all on, and that leaves a single circuit of 15 amps at 240 volts to run your furnace. Since a generator should never run at maximum load at all times, figure that a typical load of 60% is what you will want to run. A single burner on a range is typically 1500 Watts or 12.5 Amps and the oven (bake unit) is 5500 Watts or 46 Amps, so to run the electric range you'll need significantly more power. If your furnace is a gas furnace with 120 volt power, 8kW would be large enough to do what you want. If you want to add a heat pump or A/C unit, you will need at least a 20 KW unit.
