Emergency Power Generation; It's all we do!
Greetings!

EGSA Certified Technician
EGSA Certified Trained Technican
Until the early 1970s, automobile consumers had no way to effectively identify a mechanic's aptitude and capability. In response to this need, the Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) was established in 1972.

There was a similar need for independent certification of technicians in the Emergency Generator industry.  Responding to the industry's need, Electrical Generating Systems Association (EGSA) has recently created a certification program where techs who pass the exam prove to have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of various elements of the installation, service, maintenance, and repair of Emergency Power generation systems.

To qualify for the EGSA Technician Certification, one must have at least 3 years experience and pass a test consisting of 200 multiple-choice questions developed by experts in the On-Site Power Industry.  The certification is valid for a period of five years from the date of the test, and through additional testing the tech can be re-certified.  EGSA raises the industry bar and customers can now feel confident when a technician arrives on-site sporting a patch on his uniform knowing he has a comprehensive understanding of On-Site Power Generation equipment.

Thank you for taking time to scroll through this month's newsletter.  As you take in some of the information provided here, remember that whatever your need, be it a new generator quote, a service agreement, rented equipment, service or parts, GEN-TECH and our EGSA Certified Technicians can help.

Sincerely,

Here's the scenario.  You've invited about 40 guests to be at your home on a Saturday night for a pool party and just before the party starts a storm rolls through leaving you without power and some very agitated guests.  Not to be outdone by the weather and the local power company, you run to the garage to get the generator you had just for this occasion.  You're prepared, or at least you thought you were.  You turn the ignition switch on, you set the choke and pull the cord.  It doesn't start, so you pull the cord again.  And again.  And again.  Still nothing.  So you go back inside and explain to your guests that you think you flooded the engine and it won't be long before you have the lights back on.  Your brother-in-law offers to help, but he does the same thing you did, and again the generator... read more

Question: There are a pair of 500kW generators that I am responsible for. On one of them, the water pump appears to be leaking out of a hole near the pulley. Would it be okay to plug it to stop the leak?

Answer: NO!  DO NOT PLUG THIS HOLE! This hole is called a weep hole and the presence of coolant coming from this hole is a sign that the water pump is about to fail.

The reason water pumps have weep holes is to protect the support bearing in the event the coolant seal fails.
Typical Water Pump
Water Pump Weep Hole
When this seal fails, coolant seeps out of the hole instead of making its way into the bearing.  If the bearing were to fail during a run, the result would be catastrophic.  To keep your costs under control, consider getting a quote to replace your water pump.

"In 1892, the world's first long distance power lines between Green Creek and Bodie, California were run 13 miles in a straight line! At the time, engineers were afraid the power running through the lines would not be able to turn sharp corners and that it would jump out of the line and into the ground."

"I am an expert of electricity. My father occupied the chair of applied electricity at the state prison."
