Getting organized is among the top resolutions for the new year.

A recent survey by The National Association of Professional Organizers found that 71% of the respondents said their lives would be greatly improved if they were more organized. Ninety-one percent said they would be more efficient at work if they had better systems or strategies for getting and staying organized.

A unique event to help you become more organized launches on January 25, 2010, the Great Organizing Give Away where Professional Organizers around the country share their best practices and ideas.

Have you got too much stuff?

Do you need to de-clutter but cannot seem to get rid of anything?

Four common responses to the hesitation to de-clutter.
too much stuff

Many people have trouble making the decision to de-clutter, downsize, or
get rid of their "stuff." Below are four common responses to downsizing hesitation

  1. An item cost a lot when it was bought. Assuming the item was "worth" the price when purchased, and unless it's an antique, chances are good that the item is no longer valued at its original cost.  Consider "re-valuing" your stuff.
  2. My child made the item (20 years ago). Take pictures of the craft-like projects made by your (now adult) children. Turn the pictures into wallpaper on your desktop and give the items to its maker.
  3. I've been meaning to sell it on craigslist or E-bay. Calendar when you intend to sell or at least post the item online. If you still have the item by that deadline, donate it somewhere.
  4. I don't like it, or, I use it but it is a gift from someone who will notice if it's gone. Explain to those close to you know about your need to downsize. Life is simpler when you are not holding onto things because of other people.

If you have lots of clutter or feel completely disorganized you are not alone. Chances are good that you know others who feel the same. To deal with clutter in a fun and spirited way, consider inviting me to your home or workplace for a fun, interactive 90-minute workshop.

I'll offer tips and strategies for clearing clutter, chaos, and too much stuff! Call or email to schedule a de-clutter party soon!
