Chancellor Reaves Sets Aside Tickets for Alumni
Chancellor Reaves has set aside 200 tickets to the CP3 NBA Pick-Up Basketball Game for alumni who did not have access to the general sale of tickets earlier this week. The game will be Saturday, October 1, at 7 p.m. in the Gaines Center on campus and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the WSSU athletic program. It will be an evening of friendly competition between NBA all-stars Chris Paul, LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant, Josh Howard and other current basketball greats. Tickets are $40 each and there is a limit of two tickets per person. In an effort to create a fair distribution, the WSSU alumni office is holding a lottery for the seats. If you would like the opportunity to purchase two tickets, please email your name and telephone number to Gregory Hairston by 5 p.m. Monday, September 26, 2011. The lottery will be held on Tuesday. You will be contacted if your name is drawn and we will make arrangements for your payment at that time. Tickets went on sale to the general public on Wednesday of this week and were sold out in a matter of hours. So, if you are interested in attending, you need to get your name to Greg and we'll put it in the drawing. Find out more. |

WSSU and Altria: A Win-Win Partnership
Recently, a team from Winston- Salem State University including representatives from Career Services, University Advancement, University Engagement and Academic Affairs visited with representatives of Altria Client Services in Richmond, VA. It was an exceptional visit with a great university partner. Our meeting was hosted by Altria's Information Technology unit. Representatives from Altria's Sales, Human Resources, Research and Development, Engineering and the University Relations Team participated in the session. The University Relations Team talked about their approach to recruiting for interns and permanent employees. We also heard from several WSSU grads who work for Altria. Provost Brenda Allen talked to the group about Winston-Salem State's strategic plan and our progress toward curriculum reform in support of the university's student success strategies. One of our student success focus areas is to expose our students to research and internships beginning in their first year. One of Altria's newest employees, Kristen Dunlap, a 2011 Winston-Salem State alumna, addressed the group and talked about how her research and internship experience prepared her for the position she holds at Altria. |
A Brief History of the S.T.A.R. Program
The S.T.A.R. (Specially Trained Alumni Recruiters) program was implemented during the spring of 2001. The Admissions Office was in need of a formal mechanism to solicit the help of alumni volunteers in the student recruitment process. The purpose of the program is to effectively engage alumni in the recruitment process, while providing an additional connection to the university. The inaugural year of the S.T.A.R. program focused on training alumni and providing the resources needed to effectively assist the Admissions Office with recruitment. WSSU administration and alumni have been very enthusiastic about the program and the results.
Winston-Salem State University Alumni and Friends interested in participating should contact Mr. Milton Griffith, Senior Assistant Director of Admissions, at 336-750-2255 for more information.
