Welcome - President's Message |
Dear Members of our Association, dear All
This has been a great year for our association and for our mission to improve the mental health of women throughout the world.
To start with, we had this wonderful experience of the Madrid congress with so much knowledge around and growing enthusiasm throughout our debates. Lots of ideas were created, and what is even more astonishing, most of the ideas have survived and even very vividly!
There will be a special issue of our journal Archives for Women's Mental Health with the abstracts of the Madrid congress very soon.
Several committees have been started and are very actively working in the meantime such as the Committee on Policy and Ethics, or the Committee on Research and Science or the one on Education. Others are just in the start-up phase and you are all asked to join them. Please visit our website (www.iawmh.org) and contact the respective chair if you want to join in.
We have also strengthened our cooperations with different other organizations by joining their congresses with own symposia and other joint ventures. Thus, our members had for example symposia at the Congress of the World Psychiatric Association thematic conference on social psychiatry in Istanbul or at the International Menopause Society Congress in Rome. We will support the 4th International Congress of Medicine and Women's Mental Health in Medellin, Columbia (see Upcoming Events), not to mention many other activities, which you can find on our website.
As you know, during the Madrid congress we had identified our main goal of our association for this two-year period until the next congress in Lima, that is to fight violence against women. This goal has been focused on by different activities in the meantime, such as a symposium on the rights of women psychiatric patients during the World Psychiatric Association Congress in Buenos Aires and it will be further focused on by the Committee on Policy and Ethics. Members of our association are in the process of preparing a book on "Violence against Women as a Risk Factor for Mental Health", which will be edited in the Karger series "Key Issues in Mental Health", and we are also planning symposia on the topic of violence against women during the European Congress for Social Psychiatry in July 2012 in Geneva (info click here).
Lots of activities are going on - I cannot possibly mention all of them. Please do join in, let us know your expertise and your interests, let us know what is going on in your part of the world so that we can put it on the website. Please send an e-mail to info@iawmh.org and let us stay in intense contact to improve the situation of women worldwide.
Looking forward to meeting you all again at the latest in Lima, March 4-7, 2013!
Kind regards,
Anita Riecher-Rssler
