Luncheon raises record
$118,000 for students
The Northshore Schools Foundation is serious about providing district-wide financial support for STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education. The Northshore Schools Foundation annual Light a Fire for Learning luncheon held April 26th, raised more than $118, 000 to support STEM education and other district-wide initiatives.
The event, featuring Astronaut Bonnie Dunbar, highlighted a variety of programs funded by the Northshore Schools Foundation and demonstrated the organization's commitment to insuring students have access to the resources they need as they prepare to enter the workforce of our future.
Canyon Creek Elementary Marimba Band created an atmosphere of joy and energy as more than three hundred business owners, industry professionals, parents and school district staff gathered to celebrate the contributions made by the Foundation.
Teachers John Schmied from Skyview Junior High, Lydia Booker from Woodmoor Elementary and Kathleen Dearborn from the Career and College Readiness program celebrated how grants from the Foundation have made an everyday contribution to their students and enhanced the educational opportunities that the Northshore School District already provides.
Dr. Dunbar shared her inspiring story from farm to space, and cited how dedicated teachers helped direct her way. She noted that the jobs of the future will require STEM skills, and that knowledge of STEM subjects is the key to discovering how the world works.
Event emcee, Andy Wappler, Vice President of Corporate Affairs for Puget Sound Energy, brought the program together with his usual charm, insight and humor. He pointed out how corporate partners and sponsors are investing in the workforce of their future, by supporting students now.
Students from Wellington's Helping Hands program emphasized how their service learning program, partially supported by the Foundation, is teaching them lifelong service learning skills. "The Helping Hands program teaches us important lessons through doing service projects. We learn to be aware of the needs of others. We develop compassion for those in need. We think of others and not just ourselves," said Wellington student Nathan Ahlstrom.
Hannah Thomas, Bothell High School ASB President and student presenter, shared, "I have realized just how much of an impact the Foundation has had, since the beginning, every single day. For me, science and leadership inspired me, and I had many helpful teachers along the way to support me. But there are so many other paths one can take. For someone, math and business might be their forte. For another, it could be languages; or culinary arts. Whatever the path is, the Northshore Schools Foundation is there to provide an extra boost, to shine some extra light on the path. I have experienced this first-hand, and I know that so many others have as well."
The event was sponsored by more than 56 local and regional companies. Title Sponsor for the event was Cornerstone General Contractors, who was also honored with the Foundation Support Award. Molbaks was honored as a Premiere Sponsor. Major Sponsors included Foundation House of Bothell, Northwest Totem Cellars, BioLife Solutions, Hollywood Schoolhouse, and the Windermere Foundation. Microsoft, McKinstry, Boeing, Fred Meyer and the Friends of the Foundation provided more than $40,000 of challenge match funds for people making gifts of more than $200 at the event. The Northshore Schools Foundation is participating in todays Seattle Foundation's GiveBIG day and raisng funds to o provide current hospital beds for our students who are pursuing their health science certification.
This intensive course of study introduces students to a variety of careers in the health care industry and prepares the student to qualify for state certification as a nursing assistant. Students earn college credits and get a head start on their future.
The Health Sciences Career Program taught
by Kathleen Dearborn has trained thousands of area nurses, doctors and EMT's.
The current teaching beds are over 20 years old. The casters no longer hold the bed, the side rails do not meet industry standard and the lack of working electronic motors take away vital minutes from students achieving certification.
$5000 buys 1 new standard bed!
10 beds are needed to completely
update the training center.

Recognizing outstanding commitment and significant contribution to local education, the Northshore Schools Foundation announced today that Mike Sharadin is the recipient of the annual Torchbearers Award.
The Northshore Schools Foundation, with its mission to enhance learning opportunities for all Northshore students, presented the award at today's Light a Fire for Learning Luncheon. The Torchbearers Award honors an individual or a community group that goes above and beyond "giving light to others."

He has worked with youth his entire career, serving as a swim coach for the 1984 Olympics. Cornerstone General Contractors receives Foundation Award
Cornerstone General Contractors was honored today at the Northshore Schools Foundation Annual Light A Fire for Learning Luncheon for their Foundational Support.
"Their title gifts, throughout the market crash and building crunch, have been an important part of the Foundation's ability to continue to provide financial support during lean times."
When many other funders stepped away, Cornerstone continued to prioritize students over profits, and have continued their charitable giving even when the margin got smaller.
"Our kids go here," said Dave Flynn, principal at Cornerstone General Contractors, referring to the children of many of his workers. "We know that it's important to give back to the communities we serve and we make that a priority."
Cornerstone has been a long-standing supporter of the Northshore Schools Foundation, who's mission is to raise funds and create partnerships to support academic excellence and success for all students in the Northshore School District.
"I want people to know that this company has made a big gift of itself, to ensure that it lives its mission," said Carmin Dalziel, Executive Director of the Northshore Schools Foundation.
"Their decision to give means that their principals and crew all made a donation to support our students. It has company-wide impact, and the forklift driver to the office manager, are all in on it."
Cornerstone General Contractors base their company on the core values of Commitment, Integrity, Excellence & Stewardship, and are most prominently known in the Northshore area for their work at Woodinville High School, where they are completing a performing arts wing of the building that is scheduled to be open in the Fall of 2013.
