Innovation in the classroom: MP3 players help students learn to read!

The Woodin Elementary School Librarian discovered that Mp3 players were a helpful teaching tool for struggling new readers and wanted to expand the school's offering by increasing the number of devices and audio books available to students.

Audio books help ELL students hear how fluent reading sounds in English and Spanish and help struggling readers access content and comprehension of topics being covered in their classes. The additional 6 players and book subscriptions purchased with funds from a Northshore Schools  Foundation Innovative Classroom Grant are a long-term resource that will impact over 110 students this year, and be utilized by many more students for years to come.

"The six new MP3 players are proving very popular with fifth- and sixth-grade teachers trying to reach struggling readers. I have loaded Gary Paulsen's Hatchet, Gordon Korman's Swindle, Rick Riordan's The Lightning Thief and other popular titles onto the MP3 players so these readers can listen to grade-level texts. This way they can hear how books are supposed to sound and be exposed to harder vocabulary words. Our ability to buy audio books from Audible.com is even more important now, as we have lost District access to the NetLibrary catalog. One sixth grader reading at a third-grade level was excited to be able to listen and talk about the same books his peers are reading. This has gotten him more engaged in reading overall. Thank you to all the donors who made this possible!

Sincerely,

Stephanie Dunnewind

Clover Leaf Rebekahs join the cause to fight the effects of homelessness in the Northshore School District.

Each year, the Northshore School District serves up to 200 students annually who have been identified as eligible for support via the McKinney Vento Act.  The McKinney Vento Act is federal legislation which ensures that homeless children and youth enroll and succeed in school.

The Northshore School District is committed to providing support to meet these students' basic needs including meals, school supplies, personal care items, access to tutoring, special education, afterschool programs and funds for testing fees.  Due to recent federal cuts, the mandated McKinney Vento support is underfunded in the Northshore School District.  Last Spring, the Northshore Schools Foundation stepped in, naming the program as the beneficiary of the proceeds from the Milk Money Campaign. This Fall the program received an additional $5000 grant from the Foundation as a part of the Fall grant process.

Now these kids have another advocate: the Clover Leaf Rebekahs recently joined the Northshore Schools Foundation by making a $500 donation to support these Mckinney Vento students.

"Helping children in need has been one of our core guiding principles for more than a hundred years, which is why this partnership with the Northshore Schools Foundation to help homeless children is such a perfect fit. We look forward to continued partnership with the Foundation,"  says Clover Leaf Rebekahs President, Jackie Hallstrom.

Thank you

molbaks

for supporting students!

Thank you for shopping!

Molbak's representative, Lisa Moses (front left), presented a donation of over $5200 to the Northshore Schools Foundation, executive director Carmin Dalziel (front right).

The donation is a result of hundreds of shoppers attending the Northshore Holiday Showcase weekend in November which featured art displays, table centers and child friendly activities with a percent of store sales being directed to the Foundation.

"We are delighted to be the recipient of such a significant gift," said Dalziel.  "This investment is such a great example of our community coming together to support students.  Molbak's made it a priority to support schools and the community made it a priority to shop locally.   This investment in our community is a big win for all involved."

The donation from Molbak's will be used to support Career and College Readiness programs district wide as a part of the Foundations mission to enhance the learning opportunties for all Northshore students.

Molbak's Garden and Home is a long standing supporter of education and the Northshore Schools Foundation, with Egan Molbak being one of the founding Board members of the Foundation.

The Northshore Holiday Showcase was presented in partnership with Inglemoor High School's award-winning Events Class taught by Geoffrey Gilmore (not pictured).   Students (Left to right: Olga Ostash, Ashley Tohlen, Rylee De La Cruz, Colin Carter, and Wendy Fuentes.  Missing: Sara Jordan) organized the weekends events.
