We hope this note finds you continuing to do well and living your valued life. The article below by Judy Strickler, one of The Pain Center's physical therapists, can help you maximize your ability to function.
Spring Has Sprung!

We have made it through another winter in West Michigan, and now it is time to get out in the sunshine! Not only will this break up the boredom of your winter exercise routine, but it will give you a healthy dose of vitamin D.

  • Choose your event well ahead of time, and depending on your level of fitness at the start, progress toward your goal in moderate increments.

If this is a new activity for you, you can expect some muscle soreness initially. Remember to stretch the muscles that you are using to help minimize the soreness.

  • Find a partner to do the event with you. It's always more fun to exercise with a friend, and they can help with motivation.

If you are starting a walking routine, be sure to wear comfortable, supportive walking shoes.

If purchasing a new bike, the personnel at the store can adjust the bike seat and handlebars to fit you. One size does not fit all!

  • Consider training on one of the beautiful "Rails to Trails in the area.

Remember your water bottle to stay hydrated.

  • Most importantly, HAVE FUN!

If you are having difficulty finding an event, a search on the internet should provide many options. Search "Fitness walks in Michigan" or "Fitness bike rides in Michigan.

Listen to the audio clips of Dr. O'Connor discussing the importance of focusing on valued living while in pain and one of our graduate successes (from the WGVU Morning Show with Shelly Irwin).

More than the programs ...
At The Pain Center, all of our doctor's and therapists see patients outside of the programs. If you have a new injury, significant stressor, severe pain flare-up or need to adjust your home exercise program - come back to the team that you trust. We're happy to help.

Have a question about a flare up?
You are still a part of The Pain Center family. If you ever have a question, please give us a call at 616.233.3480 and we'd be happy to answer it.

Sincerely,
