Joyce Barkhouse, Access Copyright Affiliate, Awarded the Order of Canada

Joyce Barkhouse
"I was born in 1913 in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia by the light of a kerosene lamp," starts author Joyce Barkhouse when asked about her career.

Place and history have always been an important part of Joyce Barkhouse's writing. The
urge to put pen to paper started early. "I tried to write from the time I could hold up a pen," said Ms. Barkhouse."It was in my blood, it was an obsession, it was with me all the time." A steady supply of books such as The Secret Garden, Wind in the Willows and Alice in Wonderland made her quickly realize that, "they were all about English children, there was no body of literature for Canadian children." A Canadian writer was born.
