United Way Toilet Paper Drive Friday, June 18, 2010
Nonprofits spend thousands of valuable dollars on toilet paper each year - dollars that could be going to vitally important services they provide to our community. Helping children at risk, troubled teens, and families through mental health services and family counseling.

Greetings!
With Memorial Day behind us, the unofficial start to summer is here! For many kids, summer time is a time of excitement and looking forward to new adventures. Some might be going to summer camp at a new park, others may be taking swimming lessons for the first time, and still others -- after maybe a little convincing -- might finally start learning to play the drums. River Oak children and teens look forward to summer time too, but unfortunately most of them come from families who, although they wish they could, simply cannot afford these or other opportunities for their children. River Oak believes extracurricular and enrichment activities are critical for the growth and healing of the children we serve, and we strive to provide them with the support they need to participate. That's why we created an Activity/Scholarship Fund to give our kids the chance to explore their interests, develop their talent, and apply skills learned at River Oak in real-life situations. But we can't do it without your help! Please consider making a donation to help an underprivileged child or teen attend camp, participate in band or sports, go to a museum or the theatre, or take art, computer, or music classes. The possibilities for our children and teens truly are endless with your support! Thank you in advance for your help. |
How River Oak's Activity/Scholarship Fund helped Jason
| |
Like most boys his age, 12-year-old Jason loves exploring. Anything that squirms, crawls, or flies is an immediate draw to investigate. It's not surprising to learn that Jason's favorite subject at school is science. Every day he looks forward to learning something new about the wondrous world around him.

How can you help your child reap the benefits of extracurricular activities?
| |
Participation in extracurricular activities offers many benefits to children. Most studies find that children who participate in these activities are more successful academically than those who don't. Extracurricular activities are excellent ways to boost a child's self esteem, teach real-world skills, and learn teamwork and leadership skills.

As your children or grandchilden come to you this summer pleading to be signed up for baseball camp, karate lessons, or ballet class, please think of River Oak kids and how they also have the same wishes to live out their own dreams. With your support, River Oak children and teens will have the opportunity to discover, grow, make new friends, and have fun! Thank you for your continued commitment to the welfare of our community's most vulnerable children.
With gratitude, Mary C. Hargrave, Ph.D.
